11/20/2024 from Trinadad to Caribbean on a Amel 54

OPO Crew Request # 24-98 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a very well equipped Amel 54 that he has owned and cruised extensively since 2017. He is looking for a pleasant crew to join him for a Caribbean sailing season. He found out about us on the Amel owners chat web site as we have a very good reputation for getting good crew. While this is not a delivery from Point A to Point B we know we have some OPO members who are looking for longer term cruising options with a nice owner with a nice boat as long as they can also be pleasant and get along for a long time. He sent us the following explain the crewing opportunity that he has posted on other web site. Looking for crew to join the boat in TRINIDAD and then leisurely cruise around the CARIBBEAN (possibly) buddy boating with another (YouTube Channel) AMEL to ultimately end up again in TRINIDAD or CURACAO to haul out for the 2025 hurricane season; have no specific plans as we are not bound by schedules and obligations. Would like somebody on board who understands and enjoys the cruising lifestyle; not getting seasick; realizes and appreciates we are cruising NOT racing nor delivering a boat - we are not constantly adjusting and trimming sails to get better/maximum performance out of the boat. Somebody capable holding their own opinion w/o being argumentative; being able to have a good discussion etc. I am not really good at meaningless small talk; prefer an "intimate" silence while reading a book (I read a lot on my Kindle) etc. over just senseless blabbing. Hahahahaha - maybe not nice to say but straight forward to avoid misunderstandings. That said, it is extremely important to me to be able to laugh and have fun while doing this cruising; the main objective is to have a good time. Somebody able and willing to participate in every aspect of cruising: watches, provisioning, navigation, cleaning etc. Sharing good experiences on board is as important to me as good sailing, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, the stars above at night, the smell of the ocean, and the sound of the wind and the waves. AMEL 54 is a very safe and comfortable boat specifically designed for blue water sailing by a small crew of any age. Under normal conditions (trade winds etc.) there is very little to be done once she is on course and the sails are set; virtually everything is (electrically) controlled from the center cockpit. In reality: open water/ocean sailing is very easy (almost boring) as long as you keep monitoring the surroundings, weather, navigation, the boat (instruments) etc. The interesting and challenging part is charting, plotting arrival, departures and tides , mooring/anchoring etc. I have 3 main principles on the boat: #1 - SAFETY; #2 - Comfortable; comfort takes priority over speed and #3: MUST have people on board with a good sense of humor and able to laugh. The boat is in perfect condition, completely insurance surveyed Jan 2022 ; running and standing rigging etc new Q4 2022 and now being serviced on the hard in PORT OF SPAIN. I am semi-retired Dutch citizen residing in USA; since 2017 cruising the SOUTH PACIFIC - now (since May 2024) cruising the CARIBBEAN. Boat currently on the hard in TRINIDAD until the end of the 2024 hurricane season; eat mostly fish and vegetables but do, from time to time, eat meat - have no problem with crew eating meat. My plan is to have NO plan other than enjoy cruising the boat for a couple of months, then travel back to USA/EUROPE for a month or so and then back to the boat etc. etc. I am not a diehard fanatic sailor; when I am enjoying my life in USA/MEXICO/EUROPE I don't miss the boat but when I am on the boat, I don't miss my life on land. The passage is free but you will want to have a discussion about helping pay for provisions. As you when helping a boat owner make a passage, they pay for everything. In this case the owner does not want to adopt you for three months so it is reasonable to have a talk about chipping in to help. Plan on having your own money for meals and drinks and excursions ashore. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX
