5/3/2024 from Beaufort, NC to Bristol, RI on a X Yacht 48

OPO Crew Request # 24-16 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a 2001 48’ X Yacht named XXXXXX. He has owned the boat for seven years and has made almost a dozen offshore passages with her. He has also owned other boats over the years including an S226 and then a S2-36. He is looking for one or two crew to join him for this passage from Beaufort to Bristol RI up the Narraganset Bay. He has a couple of other good friends and experienced sailors going, but he would like to run 2 person watches at night so is looking for a couple of other crew with some experience. He plans to make the passage non-stop, but you may want to have a little extra time built in just in case of any weather delay. The passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for shoreside meals and drinks. If interested please send your sailing resume and contact information to him atXXXXX@XXXX

11/1/2023 from Hampton VA to Antigua on a Via Marine 42

OPO Crew Request # 23-104 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for crew for a total of four crew for his passage south this year. He is signed up for the Salty Dawg Rally and will be following their lead. Sailing with a big group has advantages. His boat, named Les Noble, is a 1986 Via Marine 42'. French build aluminum monohull with dual swing keels. Can beach it with keels up. I just got off the phone with him. Sounds like a nice guy with hands on experience. He has been doing a lot of work to get the boat ready and she should be a solid boat with nearly new sails, recently relaunched with a new bottom paint. XXXXXX will be at the Annapolis Boat Show for a week at least and would ideally like to meet any interested OPO crew members who will be at the show are interested in joining him towards the end of October for the non-stop passage from Hampton to Antigua. He e-mails that: He took the boat from Halifax to Rockland, ME then Hampton, VA for 5 year offshore fit-out. Launched a year ago and sailed back to Halifax with 2 crew and picked up new headsail and staysail and back to Hampton with stops at major cities in each direction. Then solo to Dry Tortugas and back to Hampton before hurricane season. Nice 4 day leg from Fort Lauderdale to Beaufort using Gulf Stream, his longest offshore leg and record 200 NM day. He just finished bottom job and couple other projects. He is new to cruising and offshore, so looking for experienced crew. Dry boat until landfall. Gear: single Airhead, Honda i2200 generator, home built watermaker, B and G zeus3 chartplotter, 4G Radar, Forward scan, AIS, SSB, VHF, 6 man liferaft, Iridium GO, Predict wind, Pypilot auto helm (upgrading to hydraulic ram and B and G). As usual all onboard boat expenses and provisioning is provided. You need to get to and from the boat and we recommend that you meet XXXXXX and the boat before booking flights home. You should also have money for meals and drinks ashore and for rally socials. If interested in joining him please send your sailing resume and contact information to him at XXXXX@XXXX

11/6/2023 from Norfolk Virginia to San Salvador -Jamaica- Cartagena, Columbia on a Vancouver 27

OPO Crew Request # 23-120 Norfolk Virginia to San Salvador -Jamaica- Cartagena, Columbia - Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a 1980 Vancouver 27 named XXXXXX. He is looking for one crew to join him for his big adventure. While I know this boat is smaller than most OPO member are used to responding to. After speaking with him on the phone I am convinced this is a good boat with a knowledgeable skipper who can single hand the boat, but prefers to sail with another person onboard. If you cannot join him early next month, but may be interested in joining down the line then you can contact him now and perhaps meet him and the boat before he takes off so you can meet. Ideally someone would like to commit for the start of the journey south and see how things go. The boat is in Little Creek at Cobbs Marina near entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. He adds: About himself: Originally a dinghy sailor my first keelboat was a 26 ft Camper and Nicholson S.C.O.D which I sailed extensively English South Coast and France. My second boat was a Vancouver 27 which again I sailed South Coast and France including a nonstop from UK to Spain across Biscay and back. 7000 miles ocean sailing in a Vancouver 27 Atlantic crossing and in 2023 crewing on clipper 60. Later I had this boat shipped to Sydney Australe when I moved there and sailed her out to Lord Howe Island and back and then up to the great Barrier Reef and back including a circumnavigation of Fraser Island through the Great Sandy straights. And the boat: Designed by Robert Harris for a couple to sail from Canada to New Zealand and back these boats have since circumnavigated the globe including a passage through the Magellan Straits (Read "Winter in Fireland" by Nick Coughlin) My boat had a perfect survey when I bought her in England just before covid. I've spent the past three years equipping her with the best of everything for ocean sailing with the exception of a Fridge, water maker or starlink. This is the second Vancouver 27 I have owned from the same builder (Pheon Yachts) Extremely well equipped. Safety gear includes two Rocna anchors, Winslow ocean life raft, parachute anchor, Echo Max, YB3i tracker, Monitor self-steering plus autopilot. Cutter rigged with furling yankee, hanked-on staysail and storm staysail. 4 reefs in the main to replace trysail. Nav equipment includes Raymarine Axiom 9 plotter iridium Go iridium extreme sat phone Icom VHF with AIS and Icom handheld, Navtex, Clipper Magnetic log and echo sounder etc etc. Additional charging from solar panel or towed generator. Missing: a fridge freezer (she has an icebox) water maker and haven't gotten to starlink yet. The passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for meals and drinks at stops along the way. If you stay for a long time at so e point you will want to talk about chipping in for onboard provisions. If interested please send your sailing resume and contact information to him at XXXXX@XXXX

3/27/2024 from Panama to Marquesas on a Vancouver 27

PO Crew Request # 24-06 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for one crew to sail with him aboard his 1980 Vancouver 27 named XXXXXX. He sailed from the USA to Jamica with one OPO members and has a 2nd OPO member joining him for the leg from there to the San Blas Islands and then to Shelter Bay Marina on the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal. Crew would join him at the marina in late March and stay for the long from Panama to the Marquesas and longer if you wish. As we mentioned in our previous crew request for him, we know this is a smaller boat than most people want to sail aboard. But he reminds us in his e-mail: Originally designed for a couple to sail from Canada to Australia and back these boats have done several circumnavigations including a passage through and wintering in the Magellan Straits. This is my second British built Vancouver 27, between the two I’ve sailed over 12,000 miles in Ocean passages. Besides the 12,000 miles ocean sailing in my own boats I made a transatlantic crossing last year on a Clipper 60. He is looking for an experienced OPO crew who can stand a solo watch and enjoy the adventure. The passage is free with all onboard boat expenses and onboard food included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for shoreside meals and drinks. Plus you have to make sure you are all set visa-wise to arrive in the Marquesas. He will explain the process. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX

11/20/2023 from Belfast Maine to Bimini Bahamas on a Valiant 40

OPO Crew Request # 23-127 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX sent me this crew request this morning. I just arrived in St. Maarten Yesterday. I am not able to speak with him, but since he was referred by an OPO members I am assuming the boat is seaworthy and am semi-confident that he knows what he is doing. This is what he sent me. Please do make sure you do your due diligence and ask questions about the boat and the skipper. I am also assuming the passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you have to get to and from the boat. If interested please send you resume to him at XXXXXX@XXXXXX Hello Hank, my name is XXXXXX. I am the owner of a 1979 Valiant 40 CB. I had planned to head south last Friday and discovered a mechanical problem with a furler . Rather than Jerry rig the problem I postponed the departure until new parts arrive, and everything is properly repaired. A lost my crew as a result of the postponement and am looking to depart for the Bahamas on the 20th of November, or the first weather window on the 27th or shortly thereafter. I plan to sail from Belfast ME to the Cape Cod Canal then out through the Race to either Cape May NJ or Norfolk VA weather dependent. Alternative if poor weather conditions is through Long Island Sound, down the East River to NYC and down the Jersey coast. From Norfolk I plan to take the ICW to Beaufort/ Morehead City then offshore between the Gulf Stream and the coast to southern Florida then cross over to The Bahamas and check in at either Bimini or Great Harbor. Then leisurely down through the Exumas and Ragged Islands. I have owned my own boats for the last 10 years. My first boat was a Pearson 35 which I purchased in 2013 in Port Jefferson LI and sailed extensively in New England, 2nd was a Pearson 365 I purchased in 2017 in Beaufort SC and sailed to Belfast and the New England Coast and cruised extensively in the Bahamas. I still own this boat . Boat#3 is the ‘79 Valiant 40 which I purchased in Brunswick GA in2022 and sailed extensively in the Bahamas and back to Belfast in June. James suggested I contact you as a potential source of sailors wishing to crew. Thank you for your kind assistance in this matter.

2/22/2024 from Huatulco Mexico to Papagayo Costa Rico on a Trawler

OPO Crew Request # 24-12 This crew request was sent to me last night from Pro skipper XXXXXX I have known him for many years. He is a very nice and very capable and responsible pro skipper. Since it is short notice, the owner paying a travel stipend. In your e-amil to him please ask what this means. Since this is a very short notice the owner should be willing to pay for expecting someone to drop what they are doing and buy two one-way plane tickets to help him on short notice. Plus there are two dogs aboard. I told him normally I would not send out a crew request like this on such short notice out of the country for anyone else but him. He needs to let the owner know not to be cheap on a travel stipend because this is a lot to ask. Not sure if there was an emergency, they had to leave the boat or bad planning on their part. Since it is such short notice, I did not ask him since I wanted to get this out first thing this morning to give any OPO member as much time ss possible to respond. Please do send your sailing resume to him with questions asap to XXXXX@XXXX Since it is short notice, I am also including his phone number. He has what’s app, but I would send him your sailing resume 1st and tell him you have what’s app or not so he can call you. Make sure to include your phone number. This is what he sent last night at 8:pm Looking for one competent crew to « sail » (it’s a trawler, not a sailboat) from Huatulco MX to Papagayo CR. Crew must be able to be in Huatulco on Feb 22 to meet with owners. I will join the boat Feb 24 and the owners are leaving. It will just be 2 of us and 2 dogs for the delivery crossing. I have sailed the boat over 8000 NM from Panama to Seattle over a 14 month period and it has all the service, safety and comfort you’d expect from an offshore long range trawler (single screw, max speed 7 kts). Own cabin, A/C, large freezer, wing stabilizer, pilot house and fly bridge, starlink, 2 dinghies, and 2 Vizsla dogs (must be a dog lover as they are like Velcro!), and obviously all the safety gear (life raft, EPIRB, ditch bag, VHF, medical kit, etc). Trip will depend on weather as there are some windy section we have to navigate carefully (tehuantapec and Papagayo winds) and wait for the right window. Approx 700 NM or 5-6 days underway going offshore. Lots of fishing (and catching), turtles, dolphins, whales etc. Owner will contribute to flight for the right crew. Sent from my iPhone XXX-XXX-XXXX

2/16/2024 from Charleston, SC to St. Mary’s, GA on a Tayana 52

OPO Crew Request # 24-02 Boatowner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for crew for one or two crew for a total of four crew for this short passage. He has a 1998 Tayana 52 named “XXXXXX”. The Tayana 52 is a well build and good offshore boat. I lived aboard a Tayan 37 for 14 years and sailed it to Europe and back in 1992/93. I spoke with him this morning. Ne sounds like a very nice guy. He has been sailing his whole life and bought this boat last year. He is launching her next month. He will launch a couple of days before crew arrive to make sure all is in order before the rest of the crew arrive. His plan is to bring her 200 miles further south to another yard in Georgia before planning an ocean passage later in the year or early next. The boat’s mast is too tall for the ICW (Intra Coastal Waterway) so this will be an outside passage. The passage is free with onboard boat expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for any shoreside stops. If interested please send your sailing resume and phone number to him at XXXXX@XXXX so you can explore options.

12/15/2023 from St. Lucia to St. Maarten on a Swan 68

OPO Crew Request # 23-133 Our good friend XXXXXX, who takes care of Aphrodite, the Swan 68 in our Swan Program, is looking for one crew to join him after the ARC Rally. He would like a crew to fly in about December 15th, two days before departing for SXM. This is a big boat so you do need some experience on bigger boats. He plans to make a couple of stops along the way and be in St. Maarten (SXM) by December 24th. If you have time to stay a day or two after Christmas that is fine. He would rather choose crew who do not need to run off once you arrive in SXM and help clean up after the sail north. He has one other crew already. If you can convince him you will be an asset, he may take more than one more crew. The passage is free with all onboard food and boat expenses included, but you end to have money for meals and drinks ashore and to get to and from the boat. If interested please send your sailing resume and whats app number to him at XXXXXX XXXXX@XXXX He will explain more how to get to and from the boat.

11/24/2023 from Bermuda to Tortola BVI on a Swan 51

OPO Crew request # 23-124 Updated I spoke with boat owner and skipper XXXXXX this afternoon. He lost his crew since he diverted to Bermuda for weather. Another window is opening up this weekend. He would like crew to arrive Friday or Sat as early as possible. But crew need to have flexibility just in case the window closes and this 850 miles 6 days passage is once again delayed. Mike has an older 1984 Swan 51 centerboard named “Atratus” (Black Swan) that he lives aboard. He has many miles sailing. The boat is strong and pretty well equipped if not perfect. The one thing to note is that he is a smoker so if cigarette smoke bothers you, please do not apply. The passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for any shoreside meals and drinks. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at A XXXXX@XXXX

11/5/2023 from Bermuda to St. Maarten on a Swan 48

OPO Crew Request Swan Program - Short Notice Avocation I had a crew decide last night that he is a coastal sailor. He is flying home so I am looking for one semi experienced crew to join Avocation for the leg from Bermuda to St. Maarten for the last NAR XXXXXX leg ever. I like to have 5 crew plus myself so I can be in the rotation and instruct. Plan to fly into Bermuda this Sunday (In time to join our fish fry Sunday at 5 pm) and book a flight home from St. XXXXXX Nov 14th after spending two or three days in SXM depending on we arrive. This is aboard our XXXXXX 48 Avocation. The cost is $750. Not half of the $4500. The cost for the other crew. They understand it is better if we have a full crew of five. Potential crew need to be comfortable steering a boat with a wheel. You do not need prior offshore experience. I just want to make sure you will fit into the watch schedule since you will most likely not be on watch with me as I will be in full instruction mode for all crew, but will be paired up with two crew from the first leg. I will check e-mail tomorrow afternoon and confirm who can join us. I will need to send you a letter for customs and immigration for when you fly in this Sunday explaining why you are arriving with a one way plane ticket. I look forward to hearing from any interested OPO member who wishes to join us. Just send me your sailing resume. Regards, Hank OPO

4/1/2024 from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Turks and Caicos on a Pajot Helia 44 Catamaran

OPO Crew Request # 24-15 received an e-mail from XXXXXX and XXXXXX who heard about our service through the sailing community. They are looking for one crew or a couple to join them for this shortish downwind passage from Puerto Rico to Turks and Caicos. They can make the passage on their own but rather have another person aboard to get more sleep and have a better watch rotation. You need to be able to stand a solo watch. Since tis entails two plane tickets they are willing to chip in up to $500 towards a travel. Of course everything else in included. You will have your own cabin. They request non-smokers which is normal theses days. They plan to make more passages on the way back to the USA this year so if you get along well you can be invited back for another leg. I sent him a sample of a past OPO crew request and he does a good job explaining more about this opportunity to join them. He has a web site at www.UUUUU.com. If interested please send your sailing resume and a what app number if you have whats app. This is your cell number He e-mails: Boat owners, XXXXXX, have owned XXXXXX, a 3-cabin 2016 Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 catamaran, since 2018. They have sailed her extensively throughout the windward and leeward islands, but have not yet gone north gone past USVI. They will ultimately be sailing her to Fort Lauderdale, Florida this year but would like some assistance with the longer passage from Puerto Rico to the Turks and Caicos, which will be their longest passage to date. They have done overnight passages on their own, but not multiple days on their own and would like some assistance with that type of passage since it’s just the two of them. They have been sailing since 2016 and have lived aboard for 6 months in 2023 and this year since January 1, 2024, through their current voyage, as well as multiple trips of a week or two from 2018 throughout the windward islands. They have a small dog, XXXXXX, who is a friendly Pomeranian who will be part of the voyage as well. They usually also sail with their daughter, Chloe, but she will not be there for this voyage. They have all the traditional safety equipment, including AIS, a life raft, EPIRB, water maker, personal safety gear, and traditional charting electronics, and the crew person will get their own cabin with their own head. The vessel also has StarLink for WiFi, to the extent that works offshore. The couple is more than happy to take direction on additional safety protocols, have harnesses on board, and do not drink during passage. The vessel is in excellent condition, gets regular maintenance, and the owners are “fix it now” people who do not wait for problems to get worse. The vessel is due to be put on the market when they reach Fort Lauderdale after they enjoy their last season of cruising the Bahamas. The passage is free with all onboard boat expenses paid for. There is a travel stipend of up to $500. If interested please send your sailing resume to them at XXXXX@XXXX .

9/15/2023 from Portland Maine to Old Say Brook CT on a Pacific Sea Craft 27

OPO Crew Request # 23-98  XXXXXX sailed with me over 15 years ago. Very nice guy. He did several longer passages over the next few years until he bought his own boat. He now finds himself looking for one crew to join him sailing his boat back from Maine. The boat is a seagoing Pacific Sea Craft 27. Sinc it is a small boat he is looking for one experienced crew since you will be standing a solo watch. His wife is not making the passage, but he still plans to stop at least once and maybe twice. He is in no rush, but wants to get there in 3 to 4 days once you depart and want to pick a window where the winds are not from the Southwest, which is the predominant directions this tie of year. Since he lives in CT, he plans to drive up to the boat soon after determining what the latest Hurricane Lee will do in the next few days. You could drive up with him. He is happy to pay all boat, food expenses, both onboard and ashore, and travel expenses with a travel stipend to get home. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX

2/22/2024 from Tortola BVI to Georgetown Exumas, Bahamas on a Oyster 655

OPO Crew Request # 24-04 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX, is looking for one or two crew to join him for this downwind passage from the BVI to the Bahamas. A crew recently had to bail out so he is short one and may take two crew depending on responses. The boat is an Oyster 655 named Weatherly. He has gotten crew from OPO before and he e-mails two members have become friend and regular crew, but are too busy to help this time. That helps confirm he is a good guy and this is a good opportunity. He e-mails: “Weatherly is leaving on February 22 to sail from Tortola, BVI to Georgetown, Exumas, Bahamas. This trip is typically downwind or just off the wind, but you will experience true offshore sailing conditions. The course takes us through the Virgin Islands, along the coast of Puerto Rico, although well offshore, and along the coast of Hispaniola to Great Inagua, Bahamas, where we will clear Bahamian Customs and Immigration. We will overnight off a beautiful beach on Great Inaugua, departing the next morning for an overnight sail to Great Exuma. This route takes us past Hogsty Reef, the only true atoll in the Atlantic basin. Weather permitting, we will make a day stop to explore the reef, however last year we were thwarted by windy conditions and rough seas. You will depart Weatherly from Georgetown, Great Exuma about February 29. Two crew are needed for this trip.” The passage is free but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for shoreside drinks and meals. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX XXXXXX

10/15/2023 from Catania, Sicily to Caribbean on a Neel 47

OPO Crew Request # 23-95 Boat owner XXXXXX and his wife bought a 2020 47 Neel named XXXXXX a year ago with plans to sail to the Caribbean. We have exchanged e-mails and we are offering up this opportunity to join them for as little as two weeks but probably better for the entire passage once you know you are all getting along well. As we all know it is hard to stick to a schedule once you depart. He is looking for two more people or an experienced couple to join he and his wife for the following intended route. His wife does not have a lot of experience and he has never crossed the Atlantic before, but has been boating with previous boats owned. Only experienced crew should respond. He e-mails: We are looking for crew from Oct 15 through December. Our route roughly starts in Catania, Sicily to Malta, Tunis, Sardegna, Balearics, Spanish coast, Gibraltar/Tangier, Canaries, Cape Verde, Carib. Depart Cape Verde Dec 1 for Barbados. Crew can embark/disembark as mutually agreed. He is happy cover boat expenses but asks to chip in a “token contribution to food aboard, say €10/day”, to help make sure all eat well and enjoy meal preparation. OPO policy says it is ok to contribute to the food kitty on longer extended passages where there will be a few stops. So you need to get to and from the boat and have money for meals and drinks ashore, and also chip in an agreed upon amount. This is an almost new three cabins, three heads boat with water maker and equipped for a passage to the Caribbean. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX along with any questions and a phone number to maybe chat as plans move along. Whats app is a great way to make free international calls. He gave us his number, but I did not want to include it so no one messes up with time zones and calling at the wrong time.

10/30/2023 from Bar Harbir Maine to Florida on a Morgan 51

OPO Crew Request # 23-112 OPO member, boat owner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for one more crew to help sail from Maine to Florida. The boat is a Morgan 51. He is very experienced not just because he did a lot of passages through OPO, but is a Kings Point Graduate. This is a unique situation because he is sailing with his wife and 3 young sons between the age of 2 and 6. The kids have already sailed north with them and have spent a year on the boat. I told XXXXXX that I was proud he was out there taking his young family cruising. Anyone inserted in joining them would have their own cabin and would of course almost become part of the family by default. You can join them as early as two weeks from now from Maine, but can also try and join them early on as they sail down the coast. XXXXXX is honest in that he has no set schedule and will take up to two months to cruise down to Florida. For some this is a big ask, but I am sure there are some OPO members that think this might be a cool opportunity and a way to get a lot of sea time if you are looking to get a captain’s license. He tells a lot more about the boat and himself and I have copied and pasted what he sent me. I just got of the phone with him as well. The passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for meals and drinks ashore. But all beard food and boat expenses are covered by the owner. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX I am 38 graduated Kings Point in ‘07 learned recreational sailing on J24s. Also sailed some Maxis the school had access to, around block island race. Then I sailed in the merchant marine (engineering) for several years. Moved to Florida and we had a 26’ trailer day sailor for a couple years and then decided to go cruising. I took several of OPO passages with your organization to learn more about off shore passage making and specifically targeting different style of boats. (Cat, mono, sloop, ketch etc.) I took Mariners Learning System 6 pack course (OUPV) and waiting on USCG license. I hold a USCG engineer’s license; but not an OUPV, yet. Purchased our current boat Morgan OI 51’ last year in Ft Lauderdale. made a quick trip up to Cape Canaveral our home port to do a refit and decided to cruise north up the US east coast this year. Left Cape Canaveral in June and we are here in Maine now for the month of October before we start heading south back to Florida. We sail/ live aboard as a family of 5. Jessica, my wife, and I with our three young sons, all under 6. As far as time/ schedule for crew request we are actively cruising now in Bar Harbor. Plan to head south down east coast 120-150 nm stops along the coast ending in Cape Canaveral Florida in December. Typically, we cruise offshore but some legs on ICW when it makes sense (we have 65’ air draft). I currently have some crew scheduled to help but are looking for some more to fill in time gaps and I wanted to learn more about your process ahead of time. OPO Crew Request # 23-114 Woods Hole Mass to Stuart FL - Boat owners and skipper XXXXXX is looking for two experienced crew to sail his boat south once again. There will be a total of three crew including him. The boat is a 48-foot JonMeri, which is very close to being built to “Swan” quality as it is also built in Finland like Swans are. I have met him in St. Maarten when he was crewing for a skipper who joined our NARC Rally and then entered the Heineken Regatta. They won that year. He is a very experienced owner and nice guy. He has owned the boat a long time. The passage can take as little as 8 days, but this time of year you should plan extra time for any weather delay. If you live nearby you can wait at home and get to the boat when the window opens or you can wait on the boat. The float plan is to head south and make way towards Cape Hatteras and then keep going unless the weather is not looking good. He e-mails: “Finnesse” is a 48ft JonMeri Pilot house built in Finland. She has heat and inside steering for inclement weather. We have owned her for 22 years and have logged over 70,000 sea miles. The majority of it all off shore. We have made the round-trip passage from Cape Cod, Ma (Woods Hole) to Florida over 17 times. All off shore as she stands too tall and too deep to do any of the ditch. Have been to the Bahamas a number of times and Cuba. I also Had my 100 ton near shore masters for many years. 11/5/2023 from Bermuda to St. Maarten on a Hinckley 48

OPO Crew Request # 23-123 Normally I do not send out crew request on such short notice unless for good reason and we know the boat and skipper. Last night at our opening party for the NARC Rally boat owner and skipper XXXXXX said he lost one of his three crew. The boat is a very well equipped and strong Hinckley 48. He has done most of our rallies over the years and he is a very good sailor, good guy. He has two crew and can go with a total of three but likes to have a 4th person aboard to make things. The 2nd leg is always easier than the first anyway so this will be a good passage. The other two crew are 1) An OPO members with experience and 2) a semi-pro female crew who has done bow on race boats etc but sails with him for free. She has made the passage with him two or three times. He has made this passage many times with us. He wants crew with some offshore experience. The passage is free with all onboard food and boat expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX

10/2/2023 from Brandford CT to Hilton Head Island SC on a Hanse

OPO Crew Request # 23-105 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a 2007 Hanse 400 named XXXXXX. He is looking for 2 more crew for a total of 4 crew for this passage south. Ideally crew will be on stand bye as he is planning to leave between Sept 27 Oct 2, weather dependent. The passage will take about 7 days, but is also weather dependent. I spoke with XXXXXX this morning. He has a sound plan and seems like a nice guy and has the proper plan in place. The Hanse is a very well made boat. This one has a tall mast (over 65 feet) and draws 6 ½ feet so CANNOT go down the ICW. The plan is to go offshore to Norfolk stopping in for fuel only as need be, then wait for a weather window to get around Cape Hatteras and then maybe Beaufort NC and finish up Hilton Head. He e-mails:    Hanse 400 with self-tacker jib. Eclectic winch to raise mail sail. Boom Brake to avoid accidental jibing. Running backstays. The boat is very well appointed and equipped. Smoking allowed in cockpit. Crew should have own PFD and tethers. The passage is free with all onboard expenses and onboard food included. You get yourself to and from the boat and have money for any meals and drinks ashore. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX

2/1/2024 from St. Maarten (SXM) to US Virgin Islands and back on a Hallberg Rassy 48

OPO Crew Request # 24-01 We start off the new Year with a very nice OPO Crew Request. Long time OPO member XXXXXXand very nice guy is looking for a crew for a one-week plan to sail from SXM Feb 1st 100 miles to St. John USVI. He has to pick up gear from his storage locker that he has there left from the sale of his previous boat that he sold last year after buying his new dream boat. He bought a very nice Hallberg Rassy 48 in Europe and sailed it to the Caribbean this past fall. He plans to depart about Feb 1st so you would arrive a day early, sail over, spend two to four days there and then sail back to St. Maarten. I have sailed with him. Before he retired and was still working he sailed several Swan passages with us, then bought his 1st boat that he cruised for a few years in the Caribbean before wanting to get a more ocean going vessel for his next phase. The passage is free but you need to get to and from the boat. He will pay all onboard expenses. He e-mails: I am looking for someone to share watches while sailing since this is an overnight passage. Extensive offshore experience is not required, but I need someone to awaken me if there is other ship traffic in the immediate vicinity. There are so many nice snorkeling spots in the Vis. I intend to make this a sailing and snorkeling adventure. It would be a relaxed schedule based on the weather and our location. I am quite familiar with the Virgin Islands and the Anegada passage so I’m looking for someone who likes to be outdoors and is chill in the minute to minute! If you are looking for a nice winter getaway sailing in the tropics and spending some time on Sint Maarten and St. John, USVI then this might be the OPO trip you’re looking for. If interested please send your sailing resume and contact information to XXXXXX XXXXX@XXXX

11/1/2023 from St Thomas USVI to Cape Canaveral, FL on a CT 54

OPO Crew Request # 23-118 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for one more crew or a couple since he has one more cabin for crew to share. He has two crew already and wants to sail with 4 or 5 in total to help get his boat from the USVI to Florida. The boat is a 1977 CT 54 named Maranatha. He has about 160,000 miles and has made many passages with this boat. He has owned her since new and has been doing short day charters in the islands for many years. He is now taking the boat back to the USA to put up for sale. This is a down wind “delivery” back to the USA. He will stop along the way of need be. He knows one of the other crew who is about his same age as he is, (late 60’s) and the third is a younger crew he found online about 35. One more crew would be good. He asks for crew “with some offshore experience” and who can “steer if necessary and deck watch”. He will pay transportation for the right crew and all onboard food and boat expenses are included. I did speak with him on the phone just a little while ago. Sounds like a reasonable fellow and has a good plan in place. He lives on his boat on a mooring in St. Thomas and will be happy to speak with you to make plans. If interested in joining him please send your sailing resume to him at. XXXXX@XXXX

2/20/2024 from North FT Myers FL to Tamps Bay FL on a Cruiser

OPO Crew Request # 24-03 We do not get a lot of requests for power boats. But we make exceptions for OPO members and anything that might help get some OPO member out on the water especially during the slower winter months. OPO member XXXXXX is both an OPO member and delivery skipper. He has an older Bayliner 30-foot power boat that he has owned for 6 years he keeps in the Fort Meyers area. He is a pleasant man and knows the waterway well. He is a cruising editor for the “Waterway Guidebook” and has produced a movie about traveling the ICW. He is looking for compatible crew who would like to join him for a week trip at the end of next month. He e-mails: “30 FT PILOTHOUSE CRUISER 2 STATEROOMS, 1 BATH WITH SHOWER AND A SHOWER ON THE SWIM PLATFORM VERY COMFORTABLE BOAT WITH REFER AND FREEZER, H and C FRESH WATER. INLAND WATER CRUISER TYPE BOAT. NO EXPERIENCE www.UUUUU.com MUST COMMUNICATE WELL AND FEEL COMFORTABLE ON THE WATER” He will cover boat expenses and fuel but is not looking to adopt any adult children so crew can chip in for provisions and have money for meals and drinks ashore. While the expectation is that only OPO members who live in Florida may be interested since you may live close enough to meet before the passage, any OPO member who wished to join him for the week is welcome. You also have to get yourself to and from the boat. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX

10/28/2023 from Newburyport, MA to Tortola on a Catamaran

OPO Crew Request # 23-116 Newburyport, MA to Tortola - Pro Skipper XXXXXX is looking for one more (non-smoking) experienced OPO crew to help sail a 2 year old “Isla 40” catamaran named XXXXXX. She has one other crew who has made the passages with her before for a total of three crew. She has also moved this boat before. You must have offshore experience and be able to stand a solo watch. I just got off the phone with her. She has gotten crew from us before and it worked out well. She is a very nice captain with lots of miles and experience. The plan is to depart with a good weather window on or after Oct 28th and, if possible, make a non-stop passage. But more likely there may be a stop in Bermuda (In which case we may see you there as the NARC Fleet should be there if we leave on the same weather window). Or small chance, go to Norfolk just to get further south and be ready for the next window to open up, but waiting in warmer waters. While sailing time would be as little as 10 days, plan to have at least two weeks or a bit more if there is a problem with weather. The passage is free with all onboard expenses included. If you have the resume and skills to be a great 3rd crew, she will also pay your travel expenses within reason. 11/1/2023 from Southport NC to BVI on a Catamaran

OPO Crew Request # 23-106 Southport NC to BVI - Boat owner XXXXXX has hired a delivery skipper from the BVI to help him get his 2004 46-foot Catamaran to the BVI’s.. He has owned the boat for a few years and has done coastal cruising, but wanted to hire a skipper to make sure he got the boat to the BVI ok. He is looking for one more crew for a total of three crew. I spoke with him today and he has had an insurance survey on the boat and is all good to go. He also has a good plan in place. Since it is the first time he has called us for crew you should you ask more questions than you normally would. Like more about the skipper he has hired. He has not met him yet. The date departure date of Nov 1st is the target date so really the best weather window starting Nov 1st. Once you depart it may only take 8 or 9 days to get there, but you want to have a little extra time just in case. The passage is free with all onboard food and boat expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for meals and drinks ashore. If interested, please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX He does not in fact live on this boat full time, but has another boat he lives on further north. He is not a new boat owner and could make the passage himself, but is making doubly sure by haring a skipper to lead.

6/29/2024 from Bermuda to Newport RI on a Bristol 477

OPO Crew Request # 24-05

This is the first request we have gotten as being the official sponsor of the Newport Bermuda Race (NBR) run bi-annually from Newport to Bermuda for over 100 years. Avocation has done the race once and I have delivered other boats back after the race several times. Enough to know you have to ask more question about how the boat will be equipped for the return passage. Race boats do not have dodgers and bimini’s and are often stripped out for racing. As I returning skipper I learned quickly to ask if there was more than one frying pan aboard. Owners have the option to ship cruising sails and dodgers etc. to Bermuda in a shipping container to be offloaded so boats can be put back together for the non-race back. Do ask how much the boat will be rigged and set up differently for the return passage or if it will be an less comfortable ride on a stripped boat without dodgers. You do not want any surprises when you fly into Bermuda and find the boat is still setup for racing and not the sail back. I stopped moving J-109’s and J-105 around in race mode since I got tired of running off the Jersey Coast on boats with no dodgers and no auto-pilots in the fall. I think even most if not all race boats have auto-pilots now (sometimes not working) which is why I always so you can consider yourself an experienced crew when you can steer the boat by yourself for an hour or two in bigger seas, day or night. This first NBR crew request is not a pure race boat so will not be a very uncomfortable boat like most will be, but do ask if they are taking or shipping the dodger to Bermuda for the return passage, Hank.

Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a 1990 Bristol 477 named XXXXXX. He is racing in the Newport to Bermuda Race this June. He has owned the boat for 14 years. He is looking for two crew for a total of four crew for the return passage. While the sail back will take about five days, he wants crew to arrive a couple of days before and reserve about nine or ten days just in case. He e-mails: Elixir has been refitted over the last several years in anticipation of a north Atlantic crossing which we completed summer of 2022. New Engine, generator, plumbing, electronics, standing rigging. She is in great shape. While not a racing boat, she can hold her own, and is safe and comfortable to sail. She has all the safety equipment as required by the NOR for Bermuda. Plus extensive systems - generator, water maker, heat, aircon, power winches, new plumbing, electronics (iridium satellite) and new sails. He will skipper the boat back. He is from Portland Maine and has the Atlantic crossing and several offshore races completed. The other crew is Joachim Wick, age 64, from Hamburg Germany who has extensive Baltic and North Atlantic offshore experience. He is looking for two more crew with medium experience but can stand a solo watch. The passage is free with all onboard expenses, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for any shoreside meals and drinks. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX XXXXXX

6/10/2024 from Newport to Bermuda on a Bristol 35.5

OPO Crew Request # 23-08 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for one more crew to join his team for the race this June. He describes the opportunity well in his e-mail to us. The boat is a 1978 Bristol 35.5 named XXXXXX.  Ideally, as you will read, he is looking for crew that live close enough to participate in practice sessions and safety procedures. If interested please send him your sailing resume and contact information to him at XXXX@XXXX
He e-mails:
I have entered my boat, 1978 Bristol 35.5, in the upcoming N2B race and am looking for 1 more crew to complete my crew of 4, which includes me as skipper. Boat is based out of Guilford, CT so I was hoping to find someone who is within driving distance and could sail with myself, we before the race to ensure we are all compatible and able to practice some safety drills.
This may seem odd, but I am also hoping the person would be of average height (5' 10' or less) and weight (< 185#) given the size of my boat and her berths. We will be in the race but not intense, for example, at sunset, we will routinely put one reef in the main and shorten the genoa some. We have been out and back to Bermuda on my boat in 2022. Boat is in very good shape, all new standing rigging in 2023, running rigging excellent, sails good/excellent. Manual head, ice box - no refrigeration, 2 chartplotters, AIS send/receive, all required safety gear, autopilot, maybe windvane. We all have many years of experience sailing; me about 40 (retired pharmacist), XXXXXX (retired sailmaker) - 35 years, XXXXXX teacher about 20 years.

10/28/2023 from Newport RI to Antigua on a Boreal 47

OPO Crew Request # 23-111 Longtime sailing journalist and OPO supporter XXXXXX (OPO Member # 004) is looking for two crew to join him in the NARC/SDSA rally sailing to Antigua via Bermuda with a possible stop also in St. Maarten. He reports: I’m sailing a 2017 Boreal 47 Lunacy, a strong French-built aluminum centerboard sloop/cutter I’ve owned since new. She’s pretty simple for a modern boat. No watermaker or genset, so basic electrical and water conservation are the rule onboard. She carries a Garmin inReach unit and a satphone for long-distance comms, plus an EPIRB and six-person liferaft. An NKE auto-pilot for self-steering; also a Windpilot windvane as back-up. Looking for crew with serious offshore experience; younger crew with less experience and a willingness to learn are also welcome. Halyards and reef lines on Lunacy are at the mast, so crew must be fit and confident working on deck. They should also be prepared to stand solo watches. I’ve skippered three transats, including one on this boat, have crewed on four other transats, and have sailed many times between New England and the Caribbean, both with crew and singlehanded. If interested you can contact me at: XXXXX@XXXX You can learn more about me and the boat at: www.UUUUU.com

With very minor editing this is what he sent us yesterday. Many of his crew are OPO members that he has met over the years. He was all set with crew, but one had to drop out for medical reason. He e-mailed: Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX, plus 3 crew should plan to cast off at Mystic the early morning of 15 Oct 2023, to go down Long Island Sound through New York harbor (glorious at any time) past Cape May onto Little Creek Marina in Norfolk. IF weather dictates, we may go up the Delaware and down the Chesapeake. Crew should arrive in Mystic on the afternoon of 14 Oct to stay aboard that evening. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but crew needs to get to and from the boat. OPO Crew Request # 23-110 Noank CT to Miami - Pro skipper XXXXXX is looking for one more experienced crew to help deliver a Beneteau 40.1 at the end of the month. Spencer has gotten crew from us many times before. He is a very experienced delivery skipper who runs a good service. He e-mails: I’m happy to report that my Beneteau 35 client has upgraded to the 40.1, which will be a much comfier ride. As usual, I’d love to have an OPO member join us as our third for the delivery down to Miami. The boat lives in Norwalk but is heading to Noank shortly to have a generator installed, so depending when that project is completed, we might just leave from Noank. Target departure date is October 30, weather permitting, and I anticipate 8-9 days underway (as always, though, we won’t hesitate to tuck in if conditions get too sporty. No need to turn these coastal deliveries into an endurance challenge). Crew should be comfortable standing solo night watch. Owner will cover food and travel expenses (within reason. Preference given to someone local to CT or Miami). Our second for this one is a good friend, experienced sailor, and occasional professional delivery crew who lives and cruises aboard his Pearson 42. 3/1/2024 from Caribbean to Annapolis on a Belliure 41

OPO Crew Request # 24-07 Boat owner and skipper XXXXX has a 1984 Belliure 41 named XXXXXX. He is finishing up a three-year Atlantic Circumnavigation and is presently in St. Maarten. He is looking for one or two crew that would like to join him for this early season planned trip back home. He has gotten crew from us before. This is an older boat. I was refit before his Trans-Atlantic voyage. He wants to be home by early April because his daughter is having their first grandchild. While he would be fine having crew join him sooner rather than later, he can solo the boat to Puerto Rico and meet crew closer to the home and giving potential crew more time to plan. He explains: My ideal crew would arrive to St. Martin near February 11. We would then island hop over to Puerto Rico. Arriving there beginning of March. We will provision and then head to the Turks and Caicos looking for a good weather window to shoot straight up to the Chesapeake Bay in one off- shore leg. I'll end up at Gibson Island just North of Annapolis. I will picked up by my wife once there so we could drop crew to a transportation hub or even bring them to New York where I live. He does have Starlink and can communicate even while at sea. Another option would be to meet in either Puerto Rico beginning of March or in the Turks and Caicos around March 10th to do the offshore left together. I'm just finishing up a North Atlantic circumnavigation. I hadn't planned to be back so soon but my daughter is making me a grandfather at the beginning of April and id like to be there as close a safely possible for her giving birth. Grandfather Hood is the next big adventure! The boat underwent a major refit before I left for Europe. The engine is a fairly new Yanmar, the boat was repowered in 2016 or 2017, I'd have to look up the date. All standing rigging is in good shape. I had it fully inspected before leaving and had some rigging work done in Portugal to clear up a couple minor issues and to put a whisker pole on for the milk run. I have all essential safety equipment. A new viking solas A life raft is on board, epirb, iridium go, and I run starlink. All through hulls were replaced along with hoses. She's a very seaworthy ship. The passage is free with all boat expenses included, but crew has to get to and from the boat and have money for shoreside stops. 4/14/2024 from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to French Polynesia on a AMEL 54

OPO Crew Request # 23-131 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a 2005 AMEL 54 named XXXXXX. I met him in SXM in 2021 and we have gotten crew from him before. It worked out well. The Amel 53 is a very well build and comfortable center cockpit boat. He is looking for two crew to join him next April for this West Coast Passage from Mexico to French Polynesia. He says having three crew works well for him on his boat. He e-mails: I’m looking for 2 people to join on my AMEL 54, a boat the literally offers everything anyone can dream of…. Between Panama and Hawaii it turned out that a total of 3 worked best. The 4700 miles took 28 days and we had a good time. Eric that I found on your site turned out to be the best crew I ever had. My other offshore passages since 2019 include Connecticut to Bermuda, Bermuda to St. Martin, St. Martin to Panama in 1 go, Hawaii to Victoria (BC). My terms are that crew pays travel to and from the boat and we share operational expenditures (primarily food and drinks, but if they stay longer and want to join beaching, diving, using Starlink etc, cost rises – subject to induvial negotiations. French Polynesia requires a long-term Visa for people who want to stay longer than 90 days. At this point I’m looking at people who would join the trip and stay (if they want) a max of 90 days in FP. In any case, they must produce a flight ticket for FP customs and immigration. My boat offers diving, I do have a dive compressor and tanks. The boat has new standing rigg installed on Vancouver Island last year. New ONAN Generator installed in St. Martin 2022, 4 new sails bought in 2022, New Beata 85T engine installed in St. Martin 2020. Boat is in very good overall condition. AIS, Radar, VHF, Starlink, IridiumGO tbd - see visa requirements for FP The passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and chip in for food and drink and have money for meals and drinks ashore. And he says if you are planning to join him for longer legs you can also help chip in for other things. Make sure you ask questions about what is required to enter into French Polynesia so there are no surprises and also what he expects you to chip in per week or per month if you might plan to join him for extended cruising. 3/25/2024 from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to French Polynesia on a Amel 54

OPO Crew Request # 24-09 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to French Polynesia - Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has gotten crew from us before. I sent him a draft of his crew request for this longer passage and this is what he came back with. It looks good so I am copying and pasting the following: Owner and captain he is looking for one more crew to join on his AMEL 54, a comfortable and safe offshore cruising yacht that literally offers everything any blue water sailor can dream of. You will be a total of three on the boat, so everyone will have some privacy, space and comfort. In the night, you will do 3h watches, which means everyone can sleep for 6h in a row. “We will leave Puerto Vallarta / Mexico in the week of March 25th. Our first stop will be on Clarion Island, ca 500nm offshore. The plan is to meet a buddy boat and do some diving there, before we proceed to the Marquesas. We will arrive in Nuku Hiva in the second half of April. French Polynesia requires a long-term Visa for people who want to stay longer than 90 days. At this point I’m looking at people who would join the offshore passage and (if you want) to stay max 90 days in French Polynesia. You must show a return light ticket from Tahiti to the U.S. mainland to the customs and immigration office.” The owner and captain of s/v NO STRESS owns the boat for 8 years. He lives and traveled on it for more than 7 years. He’s done several other offshore passages during this time and his crew seemed to like the boat as well as the experienced skipper. The boat is sailable single handed and the skipper is happy to teach you all the important boat specific details to do so. The terms and condition for this private voyage is that the crew pays travel to and from the boat and we share operational expenditures like e.g. food and drinks, Starlink (in case you want to use Internet while on the boat). Please note that he is asking for crew to chip in for some provisioning and boat expenses. This we consider ok and normal since you are joining for a long time and it in unreasonable to expect an owner to pay for everything. But you do want to make sure you talk about what you expect to contribute on a weekly or monthly basis. While you will not spend a penny during the long offshore legs, there is a lot of provisioning to do before departing North America. Make sure all is agreed upon before you join the boat. Also confirm who the 3rd crew is and where you will fit in. If interested please send him your sailing resume to XXXXX@XXXX

5/22/2024 from St. Maarten to Huntington NY on a Amel 53

OPO Crew Request # 24-13 St. Maarten to Huntington NY - Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX is looking for crew to join him for his annual sail back from the Caribbean. He has made the passage many times on his very well equipped and maintained Amel 53 named XXXXXX that he has owned since new. The target date to depart is May 22nd, but he is flexible with the date. He plans to sail straight through SXM to Huntington but always leaves the option to stop in Bermuda so plan the extra time away if you stop. The passage takes about 9 or 10 day of sailing, but you need to add a few more days just stop in Bermuda just in case. He has gotten crew from us before. This is a very seaworthy and offshore built boat. He has been making the passage for as long as I have. He is looking for crew that are team players and willing to follow instructions and learn so previous offshore experience is nice, but not the most important criteria. (Although aversion to sea sickness or knowing how to take medication to prevent is key.) Crew will stand watches and help keep the boat safe and in good order. The passage is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for meals and drinks ashore. If interested please send your sailing resume and phone number to him at XXXXX@XXXX

6/1/2024 from Cabo de San José, BCS, Mexico to San Diego, CA on a 39 Leopard

OPO Crew Request # 24-14 Boat owner and skipper XXXXXX has a 2013, 39 Leopard named XXXXXX that he has owned for the past 11 years. He is looking for one or two crew who in his own words. This is more a delivery passage than a pleasure cruise. More motoring than sailing and stopping if progress slows due to headwinds and seas. The passage may take as long as 14 days, but if you arrive early and need to change travel plans he will help out with any extra’s fee within reason. He needs semi-experienced crew who can Avoid collision, hold course, trim sails, monitor engines and follow skipper’s standing orders I would also add, and knows how to handle mal-de-mer. He e-mails: 39 foot catamaran in excellent condition with full suite of electronics and safety equipment. Private cabin for crew. He has been sailing for many years and has owned a 1983 Pearson 37 racer-cruiser, 2003 Hanse 342 before this boat. The boat is Very well equipped with EPIRB, offshore 8-person life raft, full instruments, redundant chart plotters, AIS, radar, personal safety gear, water maker. He has a blog post at https://www.UUUUU.com The passage is free with all onboard boat expenses paid for, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for meals and drinks ashore. If interested please send your sailing resume to him at XXXXX@XXXX
