  • Editorial

This is a busy month as people plan their fall passages south. We are departing on Sunday Oct 2nd with a full crew for the Annapolis boat show aboard "Avocation" and will be back Oct 11th, Columbus Day Monday Holiday. The passage gives a 10-day reprieve to members who have not sent in their annual dues of $100 since we will update the e-mail address book when we get back deleting non-active members. It is much easier for me to not have to delete you and then add you back into the book when you pay your dues late, so please, if you plan to stay active do send in your dues this week.

If you are planning to attend the Annapolis Boat Show on Thursday or Friday we will be meeting at the show on the upper deck above the Pusser's rum booth between 1:00 and 2:00 pm both days. We hope to see you there. My cell number is 631-848-3112. I am getting better at bringing it with me when I am out of the office, but the office number is still a much better to leave a message for me if I am not away. Cathy will be checking e-mails once a day and sending out notices while I am away. I will check my phone messages when I am in cell range.

    Narc Rally

We are finalizing the list for boat owners in the Rally this month. We expect more will need crew as their friends and family cancel on them. In fact the last two years if you were at the dock in Newport before departure without a crew berth, someone would have needed you last minute. If you want to sail in the NARC Rally and have not secured a berth yet, please e-mail or call and I will put you on the short list to call and we will see what we can do about getting you aboard.

We are very excited about this years rally since we have a film crew coming from California to film the start for a cable TV show and perhaps shoot a couple of 30 second commercials. We are attending less boat shows and sailing more in the Caribbean this winter so will try this new media for our marketing efforts this winter.

We will be at the Chicago Boat Show this winter as well as the Toronto Boat Show, but that will be all since they have cancelled the Philadelphia Boat Show this year.

    Swan Passage Opportunities

We do have one last berth open on the Swan 46 "Aphrodite" that has been sailing back and forth with us for the last 4 years. I personally have captained her more than once. This year Captain Patrick Childress is back after missing the last two seasons because of his booming construction business in Newport. Patrick was recently written up in the August Issue of Sail magazine for sailing around the world by himself on a Catalina 27 in his younger days. He is a very experienced captain and a great guy. If you want to make sure you are with the NARC fleet this year, please let me know and we will get all the necessary details and paperwork to you when I get back from Annapolis.

"Avocation" will be based out of St. Martin this year. We flirted with the idea of keeping her on a mooring in Virgin Gorda, but decided that it was a lot easier to get work done and parts flown into St Martin. It is also a lot easier to get to, which is a bonus for OPO members wishing to charter and sail aboard this year.

Last weekend we had 10 OPO members visit Huntington and practice racing aboard "Avocation" in preparation for the winter Caribbean Sailing Circuit. We are installing some new electronics when we get back from the Annapolis Show and buying a new set of racing sails for delivery before the Heineken Regatta. If you are interested in racing in one of the regattas this winter you will be able to race aboard in the Heineken Regatta, BVI race week and Antigua Sailing week at the end of the season. We are also now booking charters for the months of December and January. If you would like to reserve a week on a Swan rather than your average charter week that has many restrictions, now is the time to call and book a week. The price is comparable to a Beneteau or a mooring type boat, and several thousand dollars less than a normal Swan charter would be. Plus the boat includes a mate to help take care of her. Sailing around on a Swan turns a lot more heads that sailing on a normal charter boat.
