This months sees many OPO members out at sea or planning to go soon. Over 20 OPO members are sailing in the NARC Rally departing Monday Oct 29th. If you want to see the fleet off, OPO members are welcome to join us for dinner Saturday Night Oct 27th at 5:00 pm at the RI Quahog Company Restaurant on Thames St in Newport. You can pay the $25 fee for the meal at the door. If you missed the boat this time we will be sailing back from St. Martin to New York next May and then offering a return passage opportunity from Bermuda June 1st to June 7th and on June 15th we will depart for the Azores and Gibraltar. While I am away Cathy will checking e-mail and phone messages at least once a day during the week, and will be sending out notices. She also collects mail and will record any deposits for regattas or passages next year.

There will be more opportunities in November before they start tapering off in December. We will work hard to try and find opportunities for members during the slow mid winter months before it gets busy again in the spring. In the December 1st Notice we will announce a New Program that I have been working on for the last three years. It is finally

working towards fruition and will lead to a lot of very nice delivery opportunities for certain members.

    Winter Caribbean Schedule

Winter Caribbean Regattas – This will be our third year racing in the Caribbean. Many members have joined us for one or more regattas. Several are already planning to join us this year. This month we are opening up registration for the regattas. All the regattas include a place to stay, van rental if needed, racing on board, practice before the races and a great time. Call if you have any questions or simply mail in your deposit if you have already contacted us telling us you want to join us this year. I can take credit cards when I return November 16th. You only need to send in a $500 depsot to reserve a berth and for us to make accommodations plans for you. The balance is dues 30 days before the regatta. The Heineken is one of the more popular regattas and we offer deluxe accommodations ashore. Two or three spouses are welcome to join for a small additional charge and stay in the deluxe accommodations. Crew from past years insists it is worth the small premium we must charge to make this a truly special week for the not so rich and famous. We offer a berth aboard a Swan 48 in the Heineken Regatta and deluxe accommodations ashore on St Martin.

    1) St. Martin Heineken Regatta 3rd to 10th March 2008 $2200 (plus $500 for deluxe Accommodations and Pro Sail maker)

    2) BVI Regatta & Festival 31st March to April 6th $2000 Includes support boat

    3) Antigua Sailing Week 26th April to May 3rd $2000 includes support boat

Non Racing Winter Opportunities in the Caribbean – I will be in the Caribbean for 5 weeks in February and March. There are two time periods where OPO members are welcome to come and sail around with us for a few days. Monday February 11th to Sunday the 17th you can fly into and out of Tortola BVI and sail aboard Avocation for 6 days at $100 a day. And Monday February 25th fly into Tortola and sail in the BVI’s for three or four days and then sail back to St. Martin with us and fly home from St. Martin Monday March 3rd. This trip may be modified to depart the BVI’s a little early and stop in Saba for a visit ashore for a day or two. This opportunity to meet and sail with Hank is also only Also $100 per person per day. This is a great opportunity to sail in the peak season in the Caribbean and is so cheap since you are working to our available dates. If you are planning to sail with us at the St. Martin Heineken Regatta you can join us for the days prior to the event and start in the BVI’s with us up to one week earlier. Simply let Cathy know in an e-mail if you want top book either dates and call Shane our Travel agent in Arizona if you want to see what flights might cost. Either a round trip to Tortola for the first week or One-way in Tortola and then back from St. Martin for the later dates. Shane’s number is 602-870-0294

    Trans-Atlantics and European Tour

Trans-Atlantics aboard Avocation - This is the first time we are also announcing the dates and fee for the Trans-At to and from Europe next year. We will depart Huntington NY June 15th for the Azores. We will spend a few days there depending on how quick the crossing is. We will then sail to Gibraltar where the Trans-At will end and we will start waiting on weather for the rest of the trip to Sardinia. The trip will take just over one month. On the return trip in November, crew will fly into Las Palmas on the Island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Island s a week before departure for the ARC Parties. Fly in Saturday November 15th for a week of activates put on by the ARC Rally organizers and then depart Nov 23rd. The passage will take about 18 days and then the final party in St. Lucia is December 20th. The costs for either Trans-Atlantic Legs is $4500 plus a crew share of the Provisioning (1/6th share). All other expenses are included. If you are interested you should plan to speak with me in November when I get back and we will get a $1000 deposit then.

European Sailing Opportunities – We will be picking a week in August and a week or two in October to offer members the opportunity to come sailing with us in the Med. We have rough dates, but will finalize the dates by the December 1st Notice so you may plan to join us. The other big event we are inviting OPO members to is the Swan Worlds in Sardinia next September 7th to the 14th. Crew will plan to arrive four or five days before to practice and get ready for the 6 days of racing. We are in the process of securing accommodations and will settle on a price soon. But the dates will be to fly into Sardinia September 3rd or 4th and stay until September 15th. The costs will be roughly the usual $2000 to sail for the week plus whatever the accommodations and expenses are which could add another $2000. Hopefully it will be less, but Italy is on the Euro.
