Editorial
This is our season, brisk and cold outside, clear star filled nights. post hurricane season. The Nov 1st "Notice to OPO Mariners" is going out early as I will be heading up to Newport later this morning. While I am away Cathy will be checking e-mail and sending out notices, but she does not check on weekends so be patient and be nice.
About twenty five OPO members and skippers are heading to Newport this weekend for the start of the 7th annual NARC Rally (North American Rally to the Caribbean). Many other OPO members are at sea or planning to go soon. As always, I tell people, if they want to hitch a ride south in the fall, just show up in Newport with bags packed and you will find a berth. If you still want to depart this Monday call me on my cell at 631-848-3112 (do not e-mail) and I will let you know which of the private skippers are looking for crew since theirs bailed on them this past week. If you are in the Newport area, please stop by this weekend. We are docked at the Newport Yachting Center which is where they have the boat show each September.

Winter Caribbean Circuit
(This is a repeat from the Oct 1st Notice. The web site has also been updates. We have chartered Avocation for the Antigua Sailing Week so we will only be sailing in the two regattas, Heineken and BVI. If any members are interested in a week or two of sailing aboard Avocation, please call us for dates. The boat is not being used much in December or January. No bareboat charters, but we have nice skippers.)
"We said that we would start taking deposits for the winter Regattas in the October OPO Notice. We have already rented a five bedroom deluxe suite overlooking the town of Marigot for the Heineken Regatta. The dates are to fly into St. Martin on Monday Feb 26th and fly home on Monday March 5th. You will have a place to stay between those dates. Last year we had two crew bring their spouses who did not race, but were able to stay in the deluxe accommodations we had and join us at night. We have a new carbon fiber spinnaker pole and ordered a new light air No.1 headsail to stay on the top of our game. Last year we did very well with a 2nd place at the Heineken Regatta. This year we will again have one other pro onboard, Mark Washeim, of Doyle Sails Huntington Loft. We will have at least two days of practice before each regatta. The prices for the regattas including a place to stay and race aboard are: Heineken Regatta - New Crew $2400 and veteran crew who have sailed with us before $1900. Includes team shirts and some ground transportation (we get a rental van to move us around) during the week and two pro-sailors for maximum learning experience.
The BVI regatta (BVI dates are to fly into Tortola Monday March 26th and fly home Monday April 2nd.), which we also sailed in last year and had two third place finishes before raising our insurance premium on the starting line of the third race. This year we are not sailing in the BVI festival before the BVI Regatta so we can get a couple days of practice in before the real racing starts. We will have one or two support boats to stay aboard other than aboard Avocation and will practice and sail to a couple of other islands before the Race Week starts with the first party on the night of March 29th. The price for the BVI Regatta is $2200 new folks and $1700 for veterans.
Send in a deposit of $500 now to secure a berth and make sure you will be joining us this winter. We know these two mid winter regattas will fill up soon.
