  • Editorial

We had a very good and busy spring migration season and many OPO members went sailing offshore. As you know, as the summer sets in along with Hurricane season, there are a lot less offshore passage opportunities. We will be sailing closer to home and along the coast, coastal cruising or short distance racing. We will be keeping Avocation busy. Included in this issue for the first time is the New Summer Schedule replacing the Canadian Cruise opportunity with racing in the summer Rolex New York Yacht Club Race Week this July.

Also new this month, we are scheduling a one-week cruise from Annapolis to Newport in Mid October. This will be a mini fleet of four boats sailing together, stopping most nights for dinner and up through New York Harbor and Long Island Sound to Newport. This is a great opportunity to take a spouse or friend, son or daughter, for their first taste of cruising.

The next two weeks we are busy getting Avocation ready for the Newport Bermuda Race. Some members are returning from Bermuda on one of the three Swans we are sailing back. Once back in Huntington "Avocation" will still be in Race mode and ready for the Rolex Regatta before we switch back to cruising for the WindCheck Round-About.

    NYYC Rolex July in Newport

June 2006 Bermuda Return - We have two berths left for the mini-fleet of three Swans coming back from Bermuda after the race this year. Crew will join the boats Friday June 23rd. A Swan 46 is sailing to Newport, a Swan 45 to Westport CT and Avocation to Huntington NY. The passage will take 5 or 6 days. The cost is $1000 per person, which includes all but transportation to and from the boat. Jet Blue now flies to Bermuda from JFK in New York.

July 13th to July 20th - Rolex New York Yacht Club Race Week If enough people want to spend a week this July sailing and socializing at the New York Yacht Club Summer Regatta in Newport this July, I will go ahead and enter Avocation in the regatta next week. After the opening Reception Friday July 14th there will be four days of "Around the Buoy" races and then on Wednesday July 19th the Around the Island Race and prize giving party that night. There are crew parties every night and membership privileges are extended to racing participants at the New York Yacht Club facility in Newport Rhode Island for the week of the race. The cost is $1000 to race aboard for the week (room for some crew on board/and we will split dockage fees) discounted to $800 for anyone who has already raced in one regatta with us in the past 15 months. You do not need any previous racing experience. Last summer for the Swan Rolex a few members got rooms in Newport, had their spouse or friends come up for the week and had dinner at the New York Yacht Club and hung out at the crew parties. It is a very fun week and a high-end vacation. E-mail or call this week so I will go ahead and make reservations for us and enter the race.

    WindCheck Roundabout

At this time we are still looking for boat owners that wish to join our mini-rally from City Island NY to Block Island and back to Mid Long Island Sound from August 4th to 13th. In July we will let members know which skipper may want crew. We have open berths aboard Avocation for the trip at $125 a day. I will be sending more information to the 6 boats that have already signed up soon. You just reserve the dates now and get your boat ready and I will give you more details after the Bermuda Race.

Mini-Flotilla Cruise from the Chesapeake to Newport - October 15th to 21st or 22nd

We will have four new Beneteaus to sail to the start of the Narc Rally at the end of the month. (The same boats will be in the Annapolis show the week before.) I will be the lead skipper and each boat will have a skipper. The itinerary is to stop almost every night and wait on weather if we need to, with stops in Chesapeake City, Cape May NJ, Atlantic City, Port Washington NY (after going through NY City), Huntington, and Newport over the course of the week. This is a great opportunity to introduce a spouse or friend to cruising. It is a great time of year, we will stop most nights, there will be a skipper on board and the boats are brand new. We are building in extra time to delay for bad weather. The cost is a very reasonable $900 per person for the week or $1700 per couple for the week. This covers all boat expenses, mini-provision, dockage etc, but not food ashore.
