A few members were watching the Bermuda Race via I-Boat. All participants were given transponders so anyone could watch the race on the web. Avocation placed third in competitive # 7division against more than a handful of Swan 45's and 25 boats in all. You will be able to read more about it in the British "Yachting World" marine publication. Charlie Doane was aboard and will be covering the 100th Anniversary from our boat.

Other articles about OPO and Avocation can be found in this month's issue of Sail Magazine by David Baldwin and also Latitudes and Attitudes July Issue in an article about the Heineken Regatta. The September Issue of Sailing magazine will also have an article about the Swan Rendezvous in the BVI last winter.

We will be sailing south again next year for a full Caribbean racing circuit. In September we will start "crewing up" for the winter and OPO members will get the first opportunities to sign aboard.

Until then we will be racing in the Around Long Island Race this July 27th to 30th. It is the 30th Anniversary and if we include attendance at the Opening Gala July 26th at the South Street Seaport and the awards BBQ at Sea Cliff Yacht Club, you would plan to join us as early as July 25th and go home on Monday July 31st.

In August we will be participating in the First Wind Check RoundAbout with several other OPO members aboard their own boats. Those registered may have already heard from Windcheck. If not they will be getting more information from us soon.

We want to also give everyone the heads up on a very good trans-Atlantic opportunity on a very nice new 52 footer and our 7-day mini cruise from the Chesapeake to Newport this October.

ALIR - 30th Anniversary of the Around Long Island Race - Join us for one of the more challenging races of the mid summer season. The Race starts Thursday Afternoon July 27th south of New York Harbor. The awards dinner and BBQ is in Hempstead New York on Sunday July 30th. Some crew can stay aboard from July 26th to Monday July 31st. Others will only want to sail in the race. The cost is only $250 per person plus splitting the expenses for the regatta. (Those staying aboard for the week will pay a little more than those just racing.) Let me know if you are interested and I will mail out more information later in the month.

    WindCheck Roundabout

Between 10 and 15 boats should make all or part of the 1st annual Windcheck Roundabout. I will be in touch with all the OPO members going with their own boats in the next few days. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about joining. If anyone needs crew, let me know and we will see what OPO members without boats want to join. At this point the only sure berths are aboard Avocation. The dates are Sunday August 6th in Huntington (or Friday August 4th in Rye New York) to the following weekend Sunday August 13th. Again those interested should call or e-mail me for more information.

Mini-Flotilla Cruise from the Chesapeake to Newport - October 15th to 21st or 22nd

I am excited about this mini-week flotilla we have from Annapolis to Newport in October. We will be stopping at night and doing a lot of coastal navigation. It will be a very good learning experience with a skipper on each boat. This is a very good itinerary and situation to bring along a spouse or friend that you want to challenge and introduce to more ambitious sailing adventures. Not yet fully offshore and nice stops most nights with an eye on the weather. All the boats have three cabins so we should have about 20 people in our mini-fleet with the option to add five more berths. We are building in extra time to delay for bad weather. The cost is a very reasonable $900 per person for the week or $1700 per couple for the week. This covers all boat expenses, mini-provision, and dockage etc, but not food ashore. To sign up call or e-mail and send in a 50% deposit now with the balance due 30 days before departure.

Trans-At - La Sable De Loane France to Tortola at the end of September via Canary Islands. (Meet in France September 28th. The passage will take about 5 weeks.) The boat is a brand new Beneteau 523, which has had some very good reviews in the sailing press. The trip is a very reasonable $3000 per person for the first three people to sign up and then $3500 for the next two crew. This included everything except your airfare to and from the boat. Call for an interview if you are interested.
