Editorial
Let me start the New Year "Notice to OPO Mariners'" with a Christmas Story and a gift to you. With repetition it may save you from a similar fate.
On Christmas Day, when presented with my last and biggest gift, m usual humble rumblings, "Oh you shouldn't have", as I began to unwrap, never thinking that this would turn into what I would mean!!. The big present turned out to be a quilt made by a company that takes your old t-shirts and makes a patchwork quilt out of them. There stood a dozen of some of my most cherished t-shirts (It's all about the t-shirts and the stories that go with them, never mind the pictures). Panama Canal Yacht Club, New Zealand America's Cup 2000, Sardinia Swan Worlds, Heineken Week, Newfoundland Flotilla, America 500, Antigua Race Week, all on one blanket, never to be worn in honor again.
On the bright side, there is more than one way to gain "points" with a spouse. Next time I need to get time off for a passage I can use the excuse that I need to replace some t-shirts.
Followed by some good news…

Caribbean 1500 Announcement
We like to stay in touch with and on the good side of the organizers of other events besides our own rallies and racing campaign to find more opportunities for our members. We sponsor events that do not cost too much (Ba-Ha, WindCheck Round-a-bout)) and place ads in journals for long distance races for return passage opportunities.
Recent conversations with Steve Black, who runs the Caribbean 1500 event, have lead to our becoming the recommended place to call for crew for next years event. Steve is including information about our OPO crew networking service in his information binder to over 150 interested skippers. Steve's event had 76 boats last fall from Hampton VA to Tortola BVI. Many OPO members will have the chance to sign aboard.
But before then we have…

Caribbean Race Circuit
We are now full for the Heineken Regatta at the end of February with room for one alternate crew in case someone drops out. If you want to reserve this one back up position call me before Jan 2nd.
We are also not offering berths for Antigua Sailing Week this year, since an Australian Syndicate is chartering the boat. (But if you have your heart set on Antigua Sailing Week we may be able to get you aboard another boat, just let me know). The last opportunity to sail aboard Avocation this winter in the Caribbean is the BVI regatta. You do not need to be an expert sailor or raced before. We plan a couple of days practice and relaxation on different islands as part of the BVI Regatta. Details below.
The BVI Regatta - Fly into Tortola Monday March 26th and fly home Monday April 2nd. We will have one or two support boats to stay aboard other than aboard Avocation and will practice and sail to a couple of other islands before the Race Week starts with the first party on the night of March 29th. The price for the BVI Regatta is $2200 for new crew and $1700 for OPO members that are part of the OPORT Race team.
Send in a deposit of $500 now to secure a berth and make sure you will be joining us this winter.
