Bermuda to NY - NARC Rally veteran is looking for 3 or 4 experienced crew to help sail his 58’ semi custom Able from Bermuda to NY departing about June 10th. He is a licensed captain and has sailed many miles on the boat. The trip is free and he says they eat well. For the right crew he will even pay travel expenses to and from the boat as long as it is not unreasonable. (You do not live too far away). The trip will take 4 or 5 days.

St. Maarten to Annapolis – Member has been the skipper of a nice Swan 53 for the past two years. The boat has been sold and he is helping the owner get one or two more crew for the boat. They plan to depart next Wednesday (May 14th). They have 3 crew but would like a 4th. The trip is free with onboard expenses included and should take about one week making a straight passage.

The trip will take 8 to 10 days to play it safe. The boat is offshore ready. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat.. You can stay aboard for a couple of days after arrival in St. Maarten if you want. We have know him for a long time and he is a very nice guy. Miami to Marblehead MA – OPO member has done a passage with me (nice guy) and has now bought a boat and is looking for crew to help him move her north next month. He bought a 1985 Gulfstar 45’. He plans to depart June 20th and sail offshore to Marblehead so the trip will take about 8 or 9 days. He would like at least 3 OPO members to join him. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but as usual you need to get to and from the boat. He has been sailing the boat all winter and has new sails, auto pilot and chart plotter. Member sent us the following e-mail looking for another crew to join he and his family. Here is the e-mail he send me. I am in the Caribbean and do not have time to rewrite the info, but he explains if well. You can contact him at the below e-m,ail address and let him know if you want to help sail this boat. I know nothing about the boat and he was referred by Capt who is also an opo member.
    Thanks

“I have been talking to Captain concerning a delivery from Deale, MD to Jacksonville, Fl. I plan on making the trip with 2 of my family members (wife and 17 year old son). It should start around the 24 of May – but that is dependent on closing and marine survey issues negotiations. The boat is a Morgan 60 Schooner. We have never sailed on the east coast before nor on a boat this big, so we are thinking it would be good to have someone with us from the start to Jacksonville (actually Fernandina Beach). Currently, our plan is to take the Virginia Cut at Norfolk to Coinjock and overnite there and then on to Beaufort, NC. From there we go out to Fernandina Beach. However, a bluewater trip may be a better (more timely) - we are not sure having no experience outside of the GOM and the Caribbean. While this boat has been professionally maintained by a Captain and crew since launching in 1982 – she is untested as far as we are concerned. I would think that Cape Hatteras is no place to be in a boat none of us know. We are looking for someone who has made this trip and is comfortable with a 60 ft boat and someone comfortable with owners being aboard. She has a bridge clearance of 63 ft 4 inches with a draft of 6 ft. The largest boat we have sailed up to now is a 40 cat. This boat does not have a bow thruster. So this is a big step up for us. We would not need any crew as we will stand watches. From Fernandina Beach we will take the boat around to Texas by ourselves. Do you have anyone with the proper experience? What would the rate be for such a trip?

The crew will need to be in Tahiti by about May 15. Flight assistance may be possible but preferably just from New Zealand. All food on board is paid for. There is a professional skipper on board and one other guy. The boat has sailed from San Diego but one crew has had to get off for personal reasons. You should allow 3 weeks altogether in case of delays.

Key west to Australia – It is short on details, but that is often the way with delivery skippers. Anyhow. Give him a call if you are interested and see what he is offering. PS> I do know Captain and he is a very good captain and has great patience having delivered a Tayana 52 with an owner that even I may not have been able to deal with.
    Regards,
    Hank

I'm in Key West skippering a Lagoon 42 to Darwin Australia and need 1 crewmember. A negotiated wage and return flight can be provided by the owners for an experienced bluewater sailor, preferrably non-smoker. We would also consider someone who could make the trip from here to Panama also, with a stop in Honduras, (Roatan) and the Bocas del Toros. Thanks and fair winds.

St. Maarten to Toulon France (Med coast) – OPO skipper and professional delivery skipper is looking for a couple or one more crew to deliver a very clean and almost new Amel 54 departing St. Maarten at the end of March (about March 27th or 28th). He has a mate going and is looking for an experienced crew who will treat (I will be in St. Maarten then and will see you off) the boat very nice since is like new. The route will be to the Azores and then to Gibraltar. The new owner will join the boat in Gib for the sail to France so you may get off in Gibraltar. The trip will take 25 to 30 days. The trip is free but you need to get to and from the boat. You can for more details, but he will be on a delivery and can only take small e-mails, so please only write sort e-mails with no attachments at this point.

Philipines to Australia – Our good friend and charterer for the Bermuda Race and Antigua Sailing week is looking for crew to move his other boat from Subic Bay Philipines to Australia at the end of March. The boat will be skippered by a professional skipper. Strueth is a 5 year old 49 foot strong racing boat and is in great offshore shape and maintained very well. The voyage will take about 30 to 40 days. The route will be to sail east over the top of Indonesia and then head south making one or two stops along the way. The trip is free but you need to pay your own way to and from the boat. Once again we do know the owner of the boat well and this is a great opportunity. Contact the owner or skipper for more info.

“What Knots To Know” Boating Class In Stamford - This course is being offered by OPO delivery skipper Bernie Weiss. If you live in the Stamford area you may be interested. He gives OPO members a discount.

“What Knots To Know,” a boating class focusing on basic seamanship skills, is being offered by one of our OPO professional skippers, Captain Bernie Weiss of Atlantic Yacht Delivery. “This 3-hour workshop is designed for boaters with little or no experience handling docklines, anchor lines, sheets, halyards, and other ropes on a boat,” says Captain Bernie. “We’ll learn how to tie the most frequently used knots, bends, and hitches, including ‘the sailor’s best friend,’ the bowline,” he says. Also included: How to heave a line, how to lasso a piling, how to whip a line, and how to splice an eye. All classes will be at Brewer Yacht Haven in Stamford. Here is the schedule:

St. Thomas USVI to Newport - OPO skipper will be making an early delivery from St. Thomas to Newport departing from St. Thomas March 31st. The Boat is a Jeaneau 45.2 that was part of our NARC Rally sailing south last fall. The boat is in good offshore shape and works the charger trade in St. Thomas during the winter and Newport in the summer. I delivered a sister-ship from France to Tortola a few years back and wrote a boat review on the boat which may still be on their web site. He is looking for three or four crew. Most of the crew will need to have some offshore experience since they will need to submit a resume for the Insurance Company to sign off on. If the weather is decent and everything is going well he may elect to not stop in Bermuda and sail straight through. However it is best to plan at least 12 to 14 days for this trip just in case. This trip is free with onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat.

Bahamas to Portugal - Boat owner faxed a crew request form looking for two crew to help sail his 2003 Amel 53 from the Bahamas to Europe (most likely Lisbon Portugal) via Bermuda and the Azores. He has owned the boat for 4 months. He e-mails us that she is in excellent shape and has all the offshore gear onboard. The trip will start in late May from Marsh Harbor or the Abacos in the Bahamas and will take at least 30 days with the stops, but plan to add a few days just in case. The trip is free with onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for shore side dining.

Ft Lauderdale Fl to Bahamas and back – Boat owner is looking for one crew to join him for an extended leisurely cruise through the Bahamas. He is in the Bahamas now and decided he was having such a good time he wants to extend his visit for another few weeks. His present crew has run out of time and he does not want to sail alone. The boats is a 2006 Manta Catamaran that he has been sailing since new, starting in the Chesapeake November 2006. He is looking for one crew to join him starting mid February and will be back in Florida in April. The crew is expected to help sail the boat, enjoy the winter months and help with boat chores. Sailing experience is a plus, but not necessary. The cruise is free and for the right person he is willing to even help with some transportation costs (a ticket home after the cruise). However you should have money for your own shore side meals and entertainment. If you can not take that much time off, but can join him for a good part of the time still contact him and see what your options may be. He will be happy to provide references from previous crew and the owner of The Manta Sail Boat Company who he has gotten to know very well.

Here are a couple of shorter notice long passage opportunities, so if you have been recently fired or thrown out of your house here are two good options to get away.

Subic Bay, Philippines to Hilo, Hawaii – Inactive OPO member e-mailed us last night looking for 2 crew for a long boat ride from the Philippines to Hilo, Hawaii via Micronesia. Ports of call include Palau, Chuuk State, Phonpei, Kosrae, and the Marshall Islands. He would like to depart February 5th and plans to be in HI late April. I met him in 1992 in Spain when he sailed his Valient 42 in the America 500 event from Spain to the Bahamas in which I also participated with my Tayana 37. He is a very nice guy and very capable. His wife does not care for long passages. He would like 2 crew with some offshore passage experience, good mechanical skills, and the ability to stand one-person 4 hour on and off watches, although he would like to staff for 4 on, 8 off. Non-smokers are preferred, but he will accept light smokers. Smoking will be allowed on deck only, cockpit excluded. U.S. citizen’s only. He will pay for all boat expenses and fuel, but would like to share food expenses so everyone can enjoy top cuisine. As usual you get yourself to and from the boat. The vessel is a 2006 48' Diesel Duck passagemaker motor yacht with a single John Deere engine, sail assist, and is appropriately equipped for this trip. He and his wife have been shaking her down in the South China Sea in a cruise from China to the Philippines then down the coast of Palawan and Borneo to Kuching, then Singapore and up Malacca Straits to Phuket and back here to Subic Bay.

Phuket Thailand to the Seychelles Islands or join him in the Seychelles and sail to South Africa by Nov 2008 – Boat owner is looking for one or two crew to join him as soon as early February (a little flexible on departure date) aboard his “like new” 2003 Hylas 49 that he has been sailing for a while. This is a leisurely cruise and he plans to spend July through September in the Seychelles. He e-mails “Ideally, crew that would like to begin in Thailand should arrive Phuket early Feb. 08 if possible. Or alternatively, the Seychelles (I believe the airport is at Mahe) anytime August/Sept. Total on-board will likely be three, possibly four depending on additional crew availability/suitability/compatibility. Hopefully that should outline the essentials- and as you mentioned, any further info can be exchanged via email if there is an expression of interest.” This trip is free with all onboard and boat expenses paid for, but crew need to get to and from the boat and pay for their own shoreside expenses. Note if you can not depart right away there is the option to join him this summer in the Seychelles. If you are interested in joining him you can e-mail him for more information and to exchange resumes. He also has a sailmail address that he will give you when you sign aboard, but prefers the gmail address for now to keep spamers at bay. It would appear that you will have e-mail capability while onboard and can set up an account with them so you can stay in touch on your own nickel.

Savannah GA to Miami and then the Bahamas – Skipper and boat owner had an OPO couple planning to join them next month for this trip, but the husband had to go in for surgery last week so Alan is again looking for a couple of crew for the following planned trip. He would like to depart soon (The weekend of Feb 2nd/3rd, but is flexible) for a two month trip from GA to Miami (inside our outside the ICW depending on weather) and sail first to Miami before sailing over to the Bahamas. Alan plans to be back in the States by April 15th. He has a 1999 Hunter 34 named “Dalanaga” that he sailed to the Bahamas last year and had OPO members join him for legs of the trip. We had good feedback from the crew and he is a nice guy. The boat is already provisioned, but crew are expected to chip in a few dollars to help defray operating expenses. He pays for the boat and boat maintenance. f you can not join him for two months he will entertain members thoughts about joining for a month or so, keeping in mind that this type of itinerary does not allow for exact dates and crew change ports well in advance.

Hilton Head, SC to the Florida Keys and winter cruising: S. V. Delilah is sailing south for a winter of cruising the Florida Keys and the Gulf Coast. OPO members and boat owner is looking for crew for the following legs for his sailing this winter and spring. He is a retired Navy officer with offshore and inland experience. His boat is named “Delilah”. She is a 38 foot Bristol cutter design. Built in 1995, she displaces 9.1 grt, 12’ beam, 4.5’ draft, 10’7” centerboard, 52’ air draft. She is comfortable, close winded and spreads 980 ft sq of sail. Crew qualifications: Age is not an issue if you are a willing hand and able bodied, willing to listen and do what is asked, are seaworthy, calm and compatible, a non-smoker, and observe the no drinking underway rule. The crew will be expected to handle dock lines and anchors; stand watches, and help keep the boat clean. They may participate in navigation, communications and other activities if they wish. The skipper is a qualified navigator and sailing instructor and is willing to teach those who wish instruction. Hilton Head, SC to the Florida Keys: The first leg is from Palmetto Bay Marina at Hilton Head Island, SC to Key West, FL. We expect to depart January 18th for an eight to fifteen day trip on both the ICW and offshore, depending upon weather and crew qualifications. The crew may remain aboard to share in the sailing or to await scheduled transportation when we reach The Keys. The Florida Keys and Gulf Coast: The boat will then cruise The Keys and southwest Florida until early March when we will make a trip to Pensacola, FL for some good sailing followed by a 30 day rest. Our time in The Keys will be spent sailing, diving and fishing.

Pensacola to Gloucester, VA: In late April, we will begin the return trip to Gloucester, VA., taking about two months and traveling via The Keys, then to Beaufort, NC and Norfolk, VA, or Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay; making various stops depending upon crew choice and weather. Our preferred route will be off shore on the Atlantic side, but again it will depend on weather and the crew. Expenses: Delilah supplies all on board expenses. Crew supplies personal expenses. Occasionally there are unusual expenses that are voted upon and incurred only if agreed upon by the majority of the crew. These are shared expenses. Transportation: The crew normally provides their transportation to and from the boat. We will purchase coach fare tickets for anyone we accept that makes a four week, or longer commitment.

This notice is via our New Zealand connection. Since it is originating closer to us he passed it along. We do not know the owner or the boat, but may be worth exploring if you seek an opportunity departing from Mexico into the Pacific. Feel free to contact them to learn more. We do not know what arrangements he is looking to make. Sailing with children could be a challenge.

    "Ewout Mante:
The boat: Elliott 14 (46 ft). She is a fast cruiser built in New Zealand in 1997. She has made trips to French Polynesia, Hawaii, and Mexico before. (i.e. tried and tested). In 2007 most of the on board systems were serviced and/or upgraded. The crew: We are a family boat. The skipper, Ewout, has crossed many oceans. The crew, wife, and 3 children (6, 8, and 10) are much less experienced. We bought the boat in San Francisco and first sailed North to British Columbia and hence down to Mexico. The boat is in good condition and Ewout knows her pretty well, having serviced most of the systems himself.

The plan: Leave Mexico mid-late March and head for the Marquesas. Our need: For the longer Ocean voyage we’d like an extra hand. We can handle a wide range of experience. Attitude and seaworthiness are most important. We have had other people sail along with us and fitting in with the family has not been a problem.

Some of our older members may have gotten an e-mail from an organization called Seabatical over the weekend. Several of you e-mailed me to ask who this was. Our e-mail list was sent out last year by mistake by a Geek Squad person (Geek Squad is the “Best Buy” service that fixes computers). We will never use them again, however the damage was done. We do not give or sell our e-mail list to anyone to protect members from getting too many e-mails. The owner of this group, that was a member at one time but is no longer active, sent this out without permission. He has been informed about this breach and asked to stop. Sorry for this going out unauthorized and thank you to those members who let me know.

I will be sending out an e-mail later this week updating members on the available dates and opportunities still available in our Swan Program.

Key Largo FL to Dry Tortugas and back – Charter Skipper owns a classic 1989 Morgan 41 in fine shape. He is planning a ten day trip from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas and back departing at the end of March (the 31st) . In fact he has the trip broken down day by day for us. I have copied the rest of the information from his e-mail. I did speak with him on the phone yesterday afternoon. I am sending the e-mail out way in advance just in case someone wants to plan a vacation in Florida towards the end of the winter. He is also asking for the top end of our allowances for shared expenses, but this is still way cheap compared to chartering a boat and skipper, so some OPO members may still be interested.

Day one Key Largo to Marathon - 50 miles
Day two Marathon to Key West - 50 miles
Day three Key West to Marquesas - 30 miles
Day four Marquesas to Dry Tortugas - 40 miles
Day five and six Two days in Tortugas
Day seven , eight, and nine as needed
170 mile passage back to Key Largo offshore with no stops - weather permitting.
Day ten - overnight in Key Largo.

Made numerous keys coastal trips from Key Largo to Key West
    Charter captain since 95.
    Boat owner since 94.
Vessel is in fine condition and ready to sail

    Crew expenses
I am seeking money to help cover fuel, food, and dockage (if needed). I don’t want to scare off potential crew, but I don't want to pay out of pocket either. So I am asking for $50 a day.

    Crew requirements
Couples are fine. Females are preferred. Men should be older not younger. No heavy drinkers. Sundowners only. NO booze, just wine and water. Experience is nice but not necessary. Friendly, helpful, and interested in learning is key.

Sonadora is currently based in Panama at the Balboa Y.C and is planning to leave at the end of Jan or beginning off Feb.2008. First stop will be the Galapagos Islands then across to the French Pacific Islands of Marquesas, Tuamotus, Tahiti, then on to Nuie, Cook Island, Tonga Islands, New Zealand and finally for now, Australia. E-mails that crew “must have some sailing experience, engineering skills would be an advantage, and a clear understanding of cruising. It is not racing. Crew should have a good sense of humor, and be financially self sufficient.” The trip is free with onboard food, and all fuel, water and mooring fees paid by the owner, but not tours, visas, taxes, etc. Note there is a parks tax for the Galapagos Islands and other visa and head taxes as you sail which will be the crews’ responsibilities’. In French Polynesia you need to have a ticket home or post bond money, you will need to provide a ticket or post a bond to sail through. “Age is no barrier, nor most medical conditions, providing is told about them. She is a qualified General Nurse, but medical insurance cover will be needed.” She also stresses it is preferable that you can sail for 6/9 months and make the entire passage, but is negotiable, especially if she can find two sets of crew for each half so there is only one crew change. A good mid-way point can be discussed with her and OPO members, so if you can not go for the entire 6/9 months, think in terms of maybe making the first few months or the second half and she will coordinate and discuss what place to pick for one crew change with people that are thinking along those lines. She is in the UK at present until Jan 5th 2008 and will then be returning to Panama.

Noumea, New Caledonia to Wellington, New Zealand New Zealand - Boat Owner has a 1989 56 foot sloop in the South Pacific. He is looking for crew for a one week trip from Noumea, New Caledonia to Wellington New Zealand New Zealand at the end of February. The name of the boat is xxx that he has owned since 2000. He says she is in “excellent condition. Several major refits since 2000. New sails, new rigging, new engine, new electronics, new hydraulics, etc etc”. She was last surveyed in 2004. The trip will take about 7 days but as he states “I do want to be efficient about it. But I'm also not going to push it. I use a weather router and will wait for a good weather window and I do keep in contact with the router while enroute and will take evasive action to avoid bad weather.” He lives in California but this will be his 5th passage to/from New Zealand. His longest passage was 3000 miles San Diego to Marquesas. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat. World Passage - OPO Member is making his way around the world aboard his 1983 Halhberg Rassey 49. He is looking for people who would like to join him for legs of at least 2 months or more. He is in the United States now for a few weeks so it is a good time to get in touch with him and talk about his boat and plans. I am including a rough itinerary with some options for dates to join him.

April-May 2008 from Fiji to Vanuatu to Cairns, Australia
June -July 2008 Cairns, Barrier Reef to Cookstown to Darwin
July – August 2008 Darwin (Rally) to Indonesia
August-October 2008 Indonesia to Phuket, Thailand

This is a non-smoking boat and he is looking for someone that will chip in for their own expenses which he figures will run about $15 a day. Jim tells us more about himself and his plans, “I enjoy some scuba, skin diving, fishing, and cooking. My destinations are set. I flew airplanes for twenty-four years and served in the US Navy. I take sailing seriously and need crew who do also. What does not work for me are crew members who don’t clean their stateroom, or complete their tasks as assigned. Sailing is fun as long as everyone is willing to pitch in and work. Also, sailing to ports on a time schedule is always problematic. I will do what I can to be at a place on time, but I put safety first. I have good air conditioning when needed, an ice cream maker, two auto-pilots and a good boat that has taken me safely around 1/3 of the world. Come have some fun with me in seeing the world.”

As I mentioned he is in the States now. You can e-mail him and tell him a little about yourself and your thoughts at xxxx.com He can e-mail you a picture of the boat and you can talk about what options you have. This is a good, much cheaper, way of seeing a leg of an around the world passage.

He already has two friends going but would like one more crew for a total of 4 crew. Fred has also gotten crew from us in the past and it worked out well. He plans to depart Norfolk December 5th. This time of year you may have to wait for a weather window and may have to duck into port so even though the trip could take as little as 7 days of sailing leave some extra time just in case. New York City to Charleston SC – Member is moving his J-120 from New York to Charleston SC departing with the best weather window after Nov 7th. He is looking for one more experienced crew to have a total of 5 people aboard. If the weather is good and you can make the trip offshore around Cape Hatterras, then the trip can take as little as 5 days. The J-120 (40 feet long) can make it under the bridge clearance of 65 ft on the ICW, and the draft of 7 ft would just make the upper ICW, going inside would add two or three days. John says a third option would be to leave the boat in Little Creek in the lower Chesapeake and then come back in a few days to finish the trip. In another words there are options. If you are interested, this is a very good and challenging trip, but not for a first offshore passage.

NOTE: If you are looking to head south this fall and want to sail in the NARC Rally, just send me an e-mail and I will help you find a berth that will be a good first time big offshore passage opportunity. I am in the office all day today and thru Sunday noon and then am on a delivery from Sunday evening until Wednesday.

Gibraltar to US Virgin Islands - Professional delivery captain and OPO member is looking for 2-3 crew for a transatlantic delivery of an Amel 54 from Gibraltar to the USVI. Departure will be late December likely between Christmas and Jan 1. The boat has to be offshore by Jan 1 to avoid the VAT. The ketch-rigged Amel 54, an upgraded design of the Supermaramu, is a strong offshore passagemaker, and he has thousands of ocean miles in Amels including two previous transatlantic deliveries. Information on the Amel 54 can be found at http://www.amel.fr/. The passage is approximately 3000 miles and should take 20-25 days depending on whether we do it non-stop or we stop in the Canary Islands. Transportation expenses will be paid by the owner for experienced offshore sailors.

Annapolis to St Martin – OPO member plans to sail his Amel 46, Bali Hai, from Annapolis, Maryland to St. Maarten departing November 17th with arrival by about December 1st. He e-mailed us the following information about the opportunity to sail with him. “This timing includes the Thanksgiving holiday, which may help or hinder some potential crew. I am looking for 3 crew who have some offshore experience. Attitude is more important than experience. I will provide food on board, but crew must pay for transportation to and from the boat. The boat is equipped with SSB, VHF, radar, chartplotter, Depth, knot, and wind instruments, weather fax, navtex, SkyMate, iridium phone, plus laptop with Nobeltec Admiral Program and new AIS ship tracking system. For comfort the cockpit can be enclosed (vinyl villa), all sails are electric furling, (although you still have to sheet in with those twirly things). There are 2 freezers, two refrigerators, a generator, inverter, A/C, heating, and a flat screen to watch movies.

This is a non-smoking boat and non-drinking when the anchor is up. I have PFD/harness’s for all. Crew should send resumes and include a note from their Mother giving permission. I have made this voyage over 12 times on various boats as well as Bali Hai. Good crew may join me in St. Maarten during the season.”

Paid Position – This may be a good situation for the right person who wants to spend the winter south this year. Bob Leaf like the response he got for the trans-Atlantic opportunity he posted last week and sent us more information on his sailing plans this winter. “In addition we are looking for a permanent crew member for the Caribbean from December to May starting either in the Canaries in early December or in St Lucia around Christmas time. My wife and I plan to sail for about 3 - 4 weeks at a time, fly home for a couple of weeks and then repeat the same. We are willing to pay around $600 a week for an average of 5 days a week. We are looking for a girl or guy who is very pleasant and willing to work hard keeping her in mint condition and have fun swimming, diving, kayaking in between. The person has to be easy going and responsible with a little sailing experience. This is going to be easy day sailing between the islands. and easy anchoring or docking compared to the Med. Sealeaf is a luxury 58 foot sloop with many toys. The crew member should be capable of standing a watch at sea. Thanks for all your help”

He Ads “DOUBLETIME is a lightweight fast sailing 40' catamaran with dagger boards, chart plotter, auto helm, EPIRB, life raft, etc. I need two crew with passports that will pay for travel to and from the boat, and misc personal expenses ashore. I'll supply all else, fuel, food, fees. We should be at sea for approx four days landing on November 3rd at the Lucaya Resort on Grand Bahama Island. I'll be with the boat from Sept 26th thru Oct 7th so if anyone wants to arrive early or hangout after landing, cool. Since our timing will correspond somewhat to the NARC Rally we can dub it the NARC West. Interested crew should call me.

Lonzerote, Canary Islands to St. Lucia – Boat owner sailed his Able 58 in the NARC Rally 4 years ago. He has been in Europe the last 4 years and the boat will be sailing back from the Canary Islands about December 1st. He called us this weekend looking for one crew to join his captain and three other crew for a total of 5 crew for the return trans-at. He specifically asked for a younger, able bodied crew to balance the rest of the crew. The crew does not need to be very experienced, but must not get sea-sick and be willing to help when directed to. He will pay transportation to and from the boat for the right crew. All onboard expenses also included. The boat is in very good shape.

Next weekend I will be deleting members that have not send in their dues of $125 and you will stop getting the e-mails. It is more work for me to delete you and then add you back after you send in the dues late so please try to mail them in on time if you want to stay active. We have a great year coming up with more opportunities in Europe next year. Thanks for taking the time to make sure you have sent in your dues. We also take credit cards now.. Mail in $125 to PO Box 2600 Halesite NY 11743 in a check made out to Offshore Passage Opportunities and let me know if you have any new contact info.

Beaufort, North Carolina to Marsh Harbor - OPO member is looking for one or two crew for this passage to the Bahamas. He plans to depart Nov. 3-Nov. The trip will take about a week so you will be in the Bahamas by Nov 10th or 11th. He requests, “Could use someone who has some open water experience and can steer a course”. The boat is an Island Packet 485 named "Chipka Fire III", , commissioned Oct, 2006. She has all the bells and whistles including all safety gear. The Plan is to sail south past Charleston, SC then cut across the Gulf Stream at the first weather op. All expenses paid for except transport to and from vessel. Will help with that also for the right person.

NARC Rally Catamaran - Boat owner and skipper is looking for up to 4 crew to sail south in the NARC Rally this year. He is going all the way to St. Vincent so you will need up to 3 weeks off. Here is the info he sent us this morning. He is new to our fleet for the rally, but seems to know what he is doing. He also sent pictures of the boat which he can send to you. “Never Land is a 1993 Lagoon 42" catamaran. She has been extensively refit since s he was purchased two years ago, and has made voyages from Florida to the Bahamas, up the coast to CT/RI/MA, down to Bermuda and St Thomas, cruised the caribbean for two seasons from Puerto Rico to Guadeloupe, and returned to CT. This season she will? be based in St Vincent and available for captained charters. I have been on board as captain for all her cruises and almost all of her passages. Among other things she has solar panels, wind generator, 3kw gas generator, SSB, autopilot, gps, radar. 6 man life raft plus lots of room and creature comforts. The cockpit is enclosed along the front and part way down the sides. She generally stays dry and level on passages, the exception being a driving rain from the sides or behind. There are 3 double cabins available for crew. I am 52, and have a USCG 100ton masters license. During the summer I run 100' dinner boats out of Greenwich CT. I have been sailing Never Land for 2+ years with her owner, Beverly, who will not be making the passage this time. I am looking for up to 4 crew members, male or female, with a reasonable level of sailing experience who want to do some offshore time. I will be willing to assume the cost of food etc, but I cannot provide return airfare.? The plan is to sail with your rally thru to St Martin, then on to St Vincent. I am looking for crew for any and all of the passages.”

If you are interested in a big Power Boat delivery (Which can be quite nice) please give him a ring. Please contact him for any clarification or questions. This is good seatime if you are looking for a bigger vessel to qualify for a 100 Ton License.

Swan Opportunity – One berth left for the 4 day passage from NY to the Annapolis Show. See the show and have a place to stay right next door to the show. We have more berths for the 4 day return trip. Come see the show on Thursday and depart Frioday for the sdail back to Newport (NOTE: This is new. We are sailing back to Newport to bring the boat to the yard for a few work items before we depart at the end of October so this may work better for some crew). We will be in Newport by Sunday and I will be renting a car to get back to Huntington so can drop off crew on the way home. The costs for the 4 day trip, Either leg is $600 which includes the show ticket ($30 on Thursday) We will split the provisioning costs (not much) and dockage at least 5 ways> This is an excellent opportunity to get in some sailing on a big boat in the opne ocean before embarking on a longer passage this fall. It will also help to get to know Hank (He is skippering) so he can give you a personal recommendation for future opportunities with other skippers (if you are a good person). So call or e-mail soon if you are planning to go to the Annapolis Boat Show and want to get on another boat this fall. 631-423-4988

Jamestown-Delaware-Chesapeake - OPO members (A very nice guy, long time OPO member, I have done passages with him, and a very interesting and successful businessman) is looking for crew leaving around October 6th. If the weather is good he plans a straight ride there, 2-3 days, if not he plans to sail down Long Island Sound to New York, down the Jersey Coast, then up the Delaware, and into the Chesapeake so it may take 5-6 days. The boat is a39' Fountaine Fidgi catamaran with new engines and lots of new gear. This is a free opportunity with all on board expenses paid for, but you need to get to and from the boat.

NARC Rally Newport to St. Martin - OPO member (and also very nice guy who has sailed his boat between Newport and Florida for many years) and needs two additional crew on 'Air Born', his 1993 Tartan 46.One crew for the entire passage (about 18 days with weather delays built in) and one crew for just the first leg which will take about a week. If the 2nd crew wants to make the entire trip they may be able to jump on another boat for the leg to St. Martin aboard one of the Swans if there is room.

The rally departs Newport Oct. 29, arriving in Bermuda around Nov. 2 or 3. Crew would need to arrive in Newport no later than Sunday, Oct. 28, (better Saturday Oct 27th) and plan to depart Bermuda no earlier than Saturday, Nov. 3. Crew should have offshore experience, and be in good physical condition.Crew will have to provide own transportation to/from the boat, and chip in the $75 charge for the NARC shore parties. He will provide all on board food and other cruising expenses.

He is a licensed USCG captain with 50 ton Master rating. Second crew is also a licensed captain with 50 ton Master rating, an OPO member, and has sailed several times with him. He has sailed Air Born from Maine to the Bahamas, has made 4 round trips offshore Newport-Miami, usually with 3 total people on board. Air Born is completely equiped with all Raymarine autopilot, electronics, radar, SSB, AIS, 6 person offshore life raft, jack lines, etc. Newport is the home port for Air Born.

Just in case anyone is in Ireland or has a lot of frequent flyer miles, here is the info. I do not know more about it or about distances needed to sail so please do not e-mail with more questions, but simply get in touch with them. I will be at the Newport Boat Show this week leaving in the morning. Cathy will be checking e-mail once a day and sending out notices and I will be checking the phone from Newport. 24 members are getting free tickets to the show.

This opportunity was in the Sept 1st Notice. The owner just called to say he will not be making the trip with the boat which means we have room for one more OPO members to sail with him and the two other crew. If you are interested call rather than e-mail since I am sailing a boat up to Newport today. (I will be in the office tomorrow night to check e-mail one last time before turning it over to Cathy to check and send out notices while we are at the Newport Boat Show, so I would get your message tomorrow night about departing next Monday Sept 17th.).

Jamestown RI to Cape Fear NC – Captain will be delivering an Island Packet 35 from Jamestown to Cape Fear right after the Newport Boat Show Monday September 17th. The owner has been cruising with his wife all summer so the boat is in good working order. They need at least one more crew for a total of 4 people on board. This is a planned non-stop trip, but weather may have them turning into Norfolk for three or four days. The trip will take about one week. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and pay for any shoreside meals. If you are interested you can contact me in the OPO office as I am helping to coordinate crew. Call Hank at 631-423-4988. Fred and Tom have first dibs since they called earlier and I told them it was a full trip so Fred or Tom call if you are still interested.

Newport Boat Show – If you are planning to go to the show this week I still have a few tickets to give to OPO members. Let me know in the next day or so. One ticket per member.

Annapolis Boat Show - We also have a couple of berths left for the sail aboard Avocation from New York to Annapolis next month for the show. It is a 4 day trip to or 4 day trip back which includes a couple of days at the show (Thursday and Friday at the show) and two days of sailing. We have reduced the cost to only $600 per person plus 1/5 share of food and dockage in Annapolis. This is a great opportunity to sail aboard a Swan 48, meet Hank, and get a personal referral for future opportunities. Try and call soon before we fill up with new members from the Newport Boat Show.

Jamestown RI (Dutch Harbor) to Annapolis MD – OPO Members are looking for one more experienced crew to help sail their 1995 Beneteau 44 cc named “Hawkeye”from RI to Annapolis departing early morning September 20th. The trip is free with onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat.

The trip is free and they will even pay for your $75 per head fee for the rally, but you need to get to and from the boat and pay for shoreside meals other than the rally parties. They even say they will not rush you off the boat when we get south if you want to hang for a couple of days.

Robinhood Maine to Halifax Nova Scotia – OPO skipper is looking for two crew to join him for this 3 to 4 day sail (380 miles) from Maine to Halifax aboard a two masted Freedom 28. catboat Ketch He plans to depart next Tuesday September 11th. We normally shy away from boat brokerage but since we are in the business we do get some attractive info from time to time. We also have an old NARC Rally participant who is planning to walk away from his 5 year old Beneteau 473. He is offering it to anyone that wants to take over payments of $1400 a month. (he owes $195,000) I also still have my Tayana 37 for sail up in MA listed with a couple of OPO members who are brokers. Price has been reduced to $89,900 for a boat with new everything from sails to engine to refrigeration, canvas and an awlgrip paint job including all spars. Let me know if you are interested in anyone of these three opportunities.

George, a very good friend of mine. bought a Bowman 57 ketch which had a thorough refit by an incompetent captain at a cost of 400K. Then I helped George spend an additional 150 K (at my wholesale cost) to complete the refit to my specifications. Basically, everything is new on the boat except the hull and deck. New 110 HP Yanmar, new generator, all new deck hardware, including three powered winches. New 13.4 HP bow thruster, new Spectra watermaker, new batteries and additional batteries. New 1500 watt ham radio. New 150 watt SSB radio. New Furuno radar with MARPA and gimbaled mount. Two of most electronics (George is a pilot and believes in redundancy). All new sails including everything for Marion Bermuda race. (Cruising World had story about doing race on this boat). New spinnaker -subsequent to race. Roller furling staysail and genoa work from cockpit. Mizzen staysail which enabled this 1975 design to stay right with a Swan 53 with carbon fiber sails.

Just as the boat is ready to go world cruising, the bankruptcy of the airline George worked for has changed his plans, and the boat is on the market. I have advised George to not give the boat away, but he wants to get rid of it very badly and would take $195K. Since I've put so much work into the boat, I hate to see the boat go for such a ridiculously low price, but George says the offer will stand until 02 September.

”an experienced blue water sailor, is looking for 3 or 4 other people to sail the Amalfi coast of Italy next Spring on a shared chartered boat. The cruise can be around Corsica or Sardinia or possibly southern Italy down to Sicily. Meet and do short sails with him on his Beneteau 411 in September as a way to get acquainted. The cruise in Italy would be 1 to 2 weeks in the April to June timeframe. Costs would be shared.

The idea is the same we are just switching to the fall 2008 (since he figures it will be too hot in the summer). We have not picked exact dates since we have to work around the Swan Worlds in Sardinia in September and the Mid Sea Race in Malta in October, but it is getting the right mix of people together that is more important than picking the exact dates now. He is still offering to put this one or two week charter together and get acquainted sails aboard his Beneteau 411 on Long Island Sound. With the extra time it does not have to be this September, but you will have next spring to sail together more often before making the trip next fall.

He has sailed his boat in the NARC Rally and has spend a season in the Caribbean and sailed back so is a well accomplished sailor. Avocation as you know has 3 double cabins to offer and will have me as captain for the charter. He is checking charter rates in Italy and we will set a very fair deal in response. Contact him if you want to start some long range planning and go sailing now to get acquainted and to make plans for next season in the Med.

If you have any ideas about wanting to charter for a week or two at other times or want to talk about possible trips to the med where you would mix time ashore with a charter then please get in touch with Hank. We are not planning a lot of charters in the Med. We will be offering a couple of Trans-ats next year and the Sardinia Swan Worlds in September with some of the summer reserved for family, but we also want to offset costs by offering some special tailored opportunities to some members that would like to experience something out of the ordinary. He would like to speak with and then meet a couple of OPO members to crew south departing Hampton Rhodes VA with the Caribbean 1500 (Scheduled to depart Nov 7th) with crew arriving about Nov 4th. The fleet should reach Tortola BVI by about November 17th to 20th. The trip is free for opo members and all onboard expenses are paid for. You do need to get to and from the boat. He would like you to e-mail him first with your information and phone number and he will get in touch with you

Kingston RI to Rye NY – Last weekend’s trip was called off so this is another call for the trip last week, but with more notice. Boat owner is looking for one or two crew to help him sail his Morgan 38 from Kingston RI to his home port in Rye NY. He wants to have a crew of 4 in total so with one friend going he would like 2 more crew. He is driving up early Saturday morning August 11th from NY (so you can ride up with him if you live down this way) and then departing upon arrival. The boat is new to Matt (not a new boat) and he states that she is in very good mechanical shape and he will be doing the cosmetic repairs when he gets her back home. He will pay a stipend of $100 a day plus expenses A good opportunity for someone breaking into the delivery business.

    Newport Boat Show update:
Info missing from Aug 1st Notice
I finally got pricing information for the Thursday Night Crew Change day in Newport for the Boat Show this September 13th. Pearl’s Of Newport is a very nice B & B complex spread out over 5 properties all very near the waterfront so you do not have to drive. We though about including the room rate into the price of the trip, but although we did get a good discount for Newport Standards, it was not so great to have us reserve 6 rooms. But if anyone wants to treat themselves or their spouses with a nice boat show stay ashore combined with your time at sea on an overnight sail in the fall to or from the show, then please do make reservations at the Inn soon and confirm with us by sending in a $300 deposit for the boat trip. The price at the Inn are: Suites $275 and Deluxe $225 complete with gourmet breakfast in the main house and a complimentary bottle of wine. (Some rooms are in suites with 2 bedrooms and a shared bath.) Any OPO member can call or e-mail in the next few days if they are planning to come to the Newport Boat Show and want to stay close and the price may be good for other days, but theses prices may not hold for the weekend. You can call Lisa at Pearl’s of Newport at 401-848-0061 or e-mail Lisa@Pearlsofnewport.com

The Old Christies (Now called 41 North) is still working on an off season rate and may not know what to charge us until we arrive since it is their first year in business. Presently they charge $7.50 a foot per night, so three days would be a little expensive. However it is a great place to stay for a couple of days if they can give us a decent rate we may stay. In the mean time we need to set a price for the trip so we will call dockage in Newport extra which will be split 5 or 6 ways. That way the price for the trip for 4 days from Huntington to Newport (with 2 days in Newport) or the 4 day opportunity back (also with two days in Newport for the Show) will be only $600 per person. So look at your calendars and see about joining us. The berths will fill up pretty quickly at this rate.
