Ocean sailing can be a difficult sport to pursue because of the time and expense required. It was the dream of offshore captain and OPO founder, Hank Schmitt to change all of that. In 1993 Offshore Passage Opportunities (OPO) was founded on the idea of making offshore sailing a possibility for everyone. By bringing boat owners and sailing enthusiast together in the largest member-based independent network of amateur crew in North America, OPO has been successfully providing the excitement and challenge of offshore sailing for more than a decade.

Crews on OPO trips are not full-time professionals but are serious sailing enthusiasts who want a genuine and authentic offshore experience. Offshore Passage Opportunities is not a sailing “course” and there are no tests, exams or certifications to be earned or won. What you will receive at the completion of your trip is a sense of accomplishment, camaraderie and friendship with fellow crew and the experience of a lifetime aboard one of the best production sailboats in the world.

OPO is a 24-hour sailing experience like no other. As a crew member aboard AVOCATION you will be immersed in an environment of experiential learning in which you will experience and take part in, all aspects of round the clock sailing. Cooking, standing watch, reading, sleeping and taking turns at the helm all add to the excitement of offshore sailing.
