The NARC Rally is Going Green

The NARC Rally, in association with “Sailors for the Sea”, based in Newport RI, are teaming up to make the 12th Annual NARC Rally eco-friendly. In the past most green regattas were based in one location. The NARC Rally offers a new venue to promote conservation. It is one thing to keep litter down during a regatta, but implementing sound environmental practices over the course of a two week sail instills habits that can be brought ashore and used for a lifetime.

All Rally boats and crew will be advised about what they will receive upon arrival in Newport and plan accordingly.

  1. Reusable water bottles for each crewmember
  2. Reusable grocery bags
  3. Set of cloth napkins
  4. Custom can flattener
  5. Garbage bags
  6. Information about green cleaning products

Conservation is key to any offshore passage as boats can not be resupplied and must make do with the water, fuel and essentials that they have brought along. Each Rally participant will be encouraged to buy gallon size or larger drinking water bottles to cut down or eliminate plastic water bottles. Cans can be crushed with the provided tool. Garbage will be weighed and inspected at both stops in Bermuda and in St. Maarten to award prizes to the best “Garbage Disposal Plans” implemented by the fleet.

All boats will also be asked to keep track of their engine hours which will factor in to the scoring system for overall “Greenest Boat”. After all we are sail boats and running your engine to gain a couple of knots of speed is not green. Besides fuel is expensive in Bermuda.

To All Sailors,

Thank you for your participation in the North American Rally to the Caribbean. This year the NARC Rally has pledged their commitment to Sailors for the Sea’s Clean Regattas Program. What this means is that leading up to, during and following this year’s regatta, your regatta organizers will be working with Sailors for the Sea to minimize the impact that the event will have on the shores and the seas.  This will include anything from keeping the site clear of debris and using designated pumpout stations to reducing reliance on plastic bottles and cups and recycling anything leftover.

We are off to a great start, but we need your help. As a sailor in the NARC Rally, you will be on the front lines as we work to keep these waters clear. Every choice and action can make a difference. Here are a few ways you can help during the race:

  • Keep it Clean – Hold on to any trash or recycling until you can dispose of it properly. If you see any debris on shore or sea, pick it up and throw it away.
  • Pump it Out – If necessary, empty you’re holding tanks before traveling to the event. Retain waste onboard until you can get to a pumpout station or boat.
  • Rinse it Down – Clean your boat using water (no soap) during the event. Deck soaps contain phosphates and nitrates that can dramatically affect water quality, especially in a harbor full of regatta boats.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – For example, use fewer water bottles by reusing a single one, and recycle anything that can’t be reused. At every opportunity, try to find a way to reduce your individual impact on the sea.

You can start to make a difference right now by becoming a member of Sailors for the Sea, or joining our free email list. Our website and quarterly newsletter are full of more information on environmentally friendly boating, and opportunities to receive discounts on products that leave as little trace as possible. These include non-toxic cleaning products, water bottles, sailing gear and more.

Thank you for your help as we work together for a cleaner ocean, and don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at any time.
