Opportunities
Editorial – We are back north for the summer season having arrived back in NY May 22nd. We had a decent passage north this year. We did not have any winds over 25 knots for any length of time. We did have more wind forward of the beam than past years so we had less formal meals while healed over and had several bumpy days sailing upwind. Luckily never more than 36 hours at a time.
After spending most of the last four months in the Caribbean it is good to be back home and looking forward to making more plans for the summer and fall. The Bermuda Rally starts in less than three weeks and it is exciting to have Tania Aebi skippering the boat and offering OPO members the opportunity to sail with her.
But first we are acting as the “press boat” for the long awaited return of Ried Stowe who has been at sea for over 1100 days. Try www.1000days.com
After the rally I have a delivery of a nice boat from Ct to Florida which will get me back home in time for a mini-Swan Rendezvous in Rhode Island. Keeping in touch with other Swan owners is key to getting more Swan opportunities for our members. We had more free swan opportunities this spring that any other year. That’s because of our work on the American Swan Associations Board and from attending Swan events. We also pay annually to be a sponsor their web site.
It looks like our big add ($750) in the Newport Bermuda Race Journal was a waste of money. So far we have had one crew request. There are still three weeks to the start of the race and a month until the boats start coming back. Last minute (a week or less) seems to be our niche with the racing crowd so we still have some time to see if our efforts to find return berths for members’ works out.
We have better luck with Rally’s we organize and this years NARC Rally should be the biggest yet.
Facebook – In two weeks I will be in Annapolis for the 2nd Sail Industry Conference. The 1st was two years ago in Newport. I will be there promoting the NARC Rally and our crew networking services to the sailing industry. There are also several seminars and break-out discussions and I know one will be asking about who uses social networks like Facebook. Many members have also been urging me to get on Facebook so I have signed aboard and will be building my list of “friends” and learning how to stay in touch with people.
My niche is promoting sailing to the general public and any way I can facilitate members getting more quality sea time to help them further their own goals the better. We want to help people make good decisions about buying a boat, making sailing a career change, or simply enjoying time offshore.
1000 Days at Sea – June 17th Reid Stowe will be returning to his home port of New York City after spending the last 1100 plus days at sea. Three years ago we half-jokingly included the opportunity to sail with Reid on an OPO Notice. He did find a crew who joined, but after several months started to get seasick. Turns out she was not sea sick, she was pregnant.
Both Tania Aebi and Charlie Doane (Sail magazine, OPO # 008) know him and we have volunteered to carry them both to Ried’s homecoming this month. We will take lots of pictures and post them on the web site (and Facebook) in our new photo sharing section. We are the only boat being allowed to tie up in New York Harbor for his press debut. I am sure you will be reading more about Reid this month in newspapers and maybe TV and then two or three months later in the sailing magazines. If you see any footage from the arrival, look for Avocation in the background.
Members Seeking other Members to crew on their boats can contact us and let us know what you are looking to do. We have 500 active OPO members spread all over North America. Some have smaller boats that they do not take offshore, but are happy to invite other OPO members aboard for day and weekend sails. We will be happy to help facilitate members meeting for a sail. We like to think that it is easier to make new friends that already know how to sail than trying to teach our friends how to sail. Any OPO member who has a boat and wants to invite other OPO members to sail with them should e-mail me with what kind of boat, what body of water you sail on and what kind of sailing do you do. i.e. a) Weekends only, b)anytime because you are retired or c) looking for crew for a one or two week cruise this summer. Let me know and I will send out a notice with your e-mail address only so you can exchange passwords with each other to access your opo crew profile on the web site, or exchange phone numbers
Bermuda Cruising Rally – Rallies are always a good time, with a couple of days of shared preparation in port before departure, and then the accomplishment and sharing of stories with others right after making port. Tania Aebi is skippering Avocation for the 2nd year in this rally. Several fortunate OPO members are sailing one leg or both ways with Tania sailing from Greenport LI to Bermuda and then back to Huntington NY. The rally has about the same amount of boats as last year, ten. This is the 3rd edition of the rally and we will see where it goes next year.
NARC Rally – This month we begin making plans to build the NARC Rally. We plan to continue a free rally format for professionally skippered boats and for veterans who have sailed with us before. New boat owners will be asked to arrive early for a couple of days of seminars to help them get ready for the sail south and a winter in the Caribbean. I am also toying with the idea of having a half day of NARC Olympics on Saturday before departure. If we go this route we may be asking for OPO volunteers to help organize a few events and make a fun filled day of it. We will keep you posted. We have a booth at the Newport Show in September and OPO members are invited to join us in Newport at the show and before departure in October.
Our main goal is to grow the rally from last years 31 boats to 50 boats and offer more opportunities for our members. As usual, last year, if we had two or three OPO members, on the docks with bags packed ready to go, they would have found a berth. Later towards the end of the summer we will ask members if they would like to find a berth in the rally this year. If you have some offshore experience and can lend a calming and helping voice to a “newbie” we should be able to find a berth for you.
If you want a guaranteed berth in a Swan, the NARC Rally is the next offshore opportunity in our Swan Program. Let me know if you are interested in sailing with us in the rally this fall.
Opportunities
Myrtle Beach to Newport – xxxxxxxxxx is a friend of OPO Skipper xxxxxxwho sent him to us since he is looking for crew. xxxxx is flying in from the UK next week on Monday June 7th to finish getting his boat ready for the passage north. He would like two crew to arrive in Little River (32 miles from Myrtle Beach airport) at “Cricket Marina” on Tuesday June 8th for departure by about Wednesday the 9th. The boat is an Advance 40, which is very similar to a Swan, but has a lifting keel so she can do the Intracoastal Waterway if need be. Jono has owned her for a long time and knows her well. Her name is “xxxxxxxx”. xxxxxx adds “xxxxxxxxxxx is relatively well equipped ..recent sat nav and radar epirb...but no liferaft..inflatable 4 man tender. I have done several thousands of miles in my time ..shower daily and smoke only on deck !!! like good food and cook mainly on board.” Jono continues “The trip will be from Little River on the ICW to Newport or Chesapeake weather conditions applicable and also competence of crew ie go back up the ICW or out to sea and into new York and down the Sound....Am planning to fly to Myrtle Beach next Monday ..will need a couple of days to sort out in the Marina. diver scrub..stores etc...and then off.” The trip can take from one week to 10 days depending on the route. If there is less time xxxxxx can leave the boat in the Chesapeake instead. You can call Jono at Mobile...44 xxxxxxxxxxxx(but remember the time difference to the UK) or you can e-mail him at jxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com
Milford CT to Tampa FL – I am looking for two semi-qualified crew (They will need to present a resume for the Insurance Company) for a delivery of a Passport 50 from CT to the West Coast of Florida. I will be the skipper and we plan to depart on Monday July 12th. This is a very nice boat and a calm time of year to be making the passage. It will be a non-stop trip unless we need fuel and should take about 10 to 12 days so I expect to be in Tampa by July 24th. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat. We can discuss the best way to get to the boat on July 12th after we put the crew together. If interested please e-mail me in the
Lanzarote Canary Islands to St. Thomas USVI – xxxxxxxxand his wife live aboard their Swan 47, (xxxxxxxx*). They are currently in Guernsey, Channel Islands, but are already planning their return next fall and want to have the crew roster set by June 30th 2010. They are looking for two crew to sail from the Canary Islands back to the USVI. We met xxxxxxxx and his wife in the 2007 Swan Rendezvous and they are very nice people. I am copying xxxxxxxx crew request almost verbatim. They plan to depart Nov 18th so crew would fly into the island of Lanzarote the 16th or 17th. The trip will take about 3 weeks.
“Basically anything you would want to know if you were looking to join a boat that you do not know. How many other crew aboard etc.
The boat is a Swan 47 built in 1979. Last survey was in March 2010. My wife and I will be onboard and are looking for one and probably 2 other crew. Crew will do a shared rotation watch system, as well as other duties common to a trans-Atlantic crossing. The boat is capable of handling a variety of offshore conditions, though may not be as comfortable as many other boats of a similar size built within the last 10 years. Space is limited. Water and basic provisions onboard are supplied. Foul weather gear and standard inflatable life vest are available. Ability to stay on the boat for up to 48 hours after arrival will not be an issue, but as other guests will be arriving at that time, crew will need to secure alternative arrangements thereafter. Boat is equipped with an offshore 4-man life raft (ISO 9650-1 Compliant), SSB, VHF, and radar, but no Sat Phone and no internet. Flights, ground transportation, medical coverage are the responsibility of crew. A phone conversation will be organized prior to confirmation. Troubleshooting and knowledge of diesel engines an advantage. Medical knowledge not essential. Clean living habits and personal hygiene essential. Confirmation of crew position will be made by June 30th. Full sailing CV will be required. Trans-Atlantic experience not required. Please note, we will be at sea for Thanksgiving. Please supply height, weight, age, and sex with inquiry, along with sailing experience and expectations.I am currently in Guernsey, Channel Islands and thus email is the preferred means of communication for the initial contact. x@yahoo.com”
* Stands for “x”. If you go as crew you can ask the story behind the naming of the boat.

Editorial –Antigua Sailing Week
Sailing North
Swan Opportunities
Opportunities
Editorial – We had a full boat for Antigua Sailing week with a very good crew. Five crew had sailed together before and this was the first year we scheduled a day of practice.
We surprised ourselves with a 2nd place the first race on Sunday. Saturday’s race was cancelled do the volcano. No, not the one across the way in Montserrat, but the one in Iceland. Many crew and race officials could not get flights so they delayed the regatta one day.
We repeated the first race finish with another 2nd place and were in first place in the Performance 1 division made up of some big boats. Greek Tragedy struck on Tuesday and we finished 9th. The Greek tragedy part was from only one of four boats that skipped a mark in our division retired so we moved up to eight, but no better. The pressure was on for Thursday after the lay day and Avocation responded with a great start and a 1st place to put us back in 2nd place for the regatta with one race left. We had one boat, one point back and another 2 points behind us. You would think a 4th place on the last day would secure a podium finish, but the boat two points back won, the one pointer was 2nd by 18 seconds ahead of the eventual winner of the regatta. Those 18 seconds cost us 3rd place and made it 4 years out of 6 that we were 4th place. We did get trophies for the best Swan finish and also for the best crewed boat (meaning other boats with paid crew like us). Nothing to be ashamed of, but they feel like consolation trophies after dong so well. Next year we have some business to finish.
Sailing North – Some OPO members are sailing north on a Swan at the end of the week. I depart with a full crew aboard Avocation and Murray on the Swan 57 Boonatsa will depart from Tortola with a good size OPO contingent as well. The Swan 48 Bella Luna that AJ Smith is skippering has been delayed do to slow yard work in Tortola so if you want to sail north on a Swan in a couple of weeks you can. As soon as AJ finalizes plans with the owner we will send out a notice looking for crew to sail with AJ from Tortola BVI to Jamestown RI. I think the dates will be around May 15th so if you have not signed up yet for a passage you can think about it and be able to react when you see the e-mail tomorrow. Because of the late nature of the delivery, the trip will be free.
Swan Opportunity in June - Bermuda Cruising Rally – The trip from the US East Coast to Bermuda and back is the best first time offshore experience and June is the best time to go. If you have been waiting to take a spouse or young adult child offshore, the Bermuda Cruising Rally is the event to do this in. I took my wife Cathy on such a passage years ago in a 35 footer and she still sails offshore with me. I will be skippering a sister Swan 48 and Tania Aebi will be skippering Avocation.
We gather in Greenport NY June 18th for departure that weekend. Stay until June 27th if you are sailing the first leg to Bermuda. The return passage June 28th to July 4th (with Crew arriving on Sunday June 27th) is a good run. The first week costs a bit more for Rally fees and included an extra couple of days and festivities. Either way you will meet Tania Aebi and be part of our Swan Fleet sailing to and from Bermuda. If you are interested, I will be checking e-mail until Saturday and Cathy will be checking the office while we are at sea. The leg to Bermuda with me is $1800 and the return passage is $1600. Reserve a berth with a $500 deposit and I will be in touch when I am back in the office May 24th.
Opportunities
The opportunities have been going out as they come in. We are finding that boat owners and skippers looking for crew for longer passages from the Caribbean to the states are having trouble finding crew so it looks like everyone that was looking for a passage this spring has found one. The two week trip with AJ will be sent out tomorrow and I am sure there will be others before the spring season is over. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. I am in St. Maarten by myself getting the boat ready and check e-mail every afternoon while it is hot, hot, hot.

NARC Rally 2010
Heineken Regatta Podium Finish
Swan Opportunities
Opportunities
Editorial – This April 1st finds us on the island of Dominica with five
OPO members aboard for the week. We departed St. Maarten over the weekend
and sailed past the St. Barth's to see the mega sailing fleet round the leeward mark in the St. Barth's Bucket. Over 40 of the world’s largest sailboats go all out to see who can round the marks in one piece and have bragging rights for the coming year.
Yesterday we took a river tour of the Indian River National Park and wicked drinks at the Bush bar at the top of the river. Today we had the famous “Emerald Pool” all to ourselves as we arrived late and all the tour buses were gone. Tomorrow we see the other half of the island and Trafalgar Falls and then depart for St. Maarten on Thursday. I am sending out the April 1st Notice a day or tow early since I will not have access until Friday Night. I fly home this weekend and will be in the office Monday April 5th
You too can join us next year when we offer very affordable sailing opportunities with us aboard Avocation.
This time of year the opportunities start coming in faster and we send them out as they come in so we do not have a long opportunity list this month. Many more to follow in the next two months. I will be in the office next week and if you want to make sure you will have a good opportunity or need help getting that first offshore passage in, next week will be the time to speak with me and make sure we help you get aboard. You cans end me an e-mail to make an appointment to speak on the phone or just call me next week in the office.
Heineken Regatta – We have already bragged about our Podium finish at the Heineken regatta. Hat makes two of the five years we raced in the regatta and that we had a podium finish. We have had three 4th place finished at Antigua Sailing week. Last year it blew very hard and we were not very competitive, but this year we have a near full crew, new sails, and we have added a practice day so we should be very competitive and have a good chance to finally finish in the top three. If you want to join us read below and give me a call or send an e-mail.
NARC Rally 2010 - Before departing St. Maarten last week we secured a new major sponsor for our NARC Rally for next fall. We have never had a final destination for the rally and allowed boats to linger in Bermuda if they had never been there before or they could sail to the BVI's or any other final destination after Bermuda. We will still allow this latitude next year, but the management of IGY Marinas will now throw our final destination party and offer a discount dockage deal for boat in the fleet. More details will follow, but what this means for OPO members is that we will be able to grow the fleet to even more boats next year by offering more services and benefits to rally participants. Last year we had 31 boats in the fleet and offered many free sailing opportunities to OPO members this fall. We hope to attract even more boats and have more sailing opportunities for members.
Antigua Sailing Week – Fly into Antigua Thursday April 22nd and fly home May 1st. Friday is practice day and racing starts on Saturday. There are six days of racing with one lay day in the middle. We charter a support boat for people to sleep aboard for the regatta. We have only 2 berths left. We may have to charter two support boats so we are comfortable. We already have a 46 foot Cat with 6 cabins. Veteran Swan Skipper Rick Butler will be skippering her once again. She is a great party platform for après race days. If we have a crew of 12 to 14 we will get a second boat so we will be an OPO mini fleet for the regatta. This is the best, if not biggest, event of the season. Please let me know if you are interested in joining us this year. The cost for Antigua Sailing Week is $2250 which includes a berth on the support boat. Just let me know if you are interested and we can talk next week. It is also possible to fly into St. Marten early and sail to Antigua with us and then back after the event. Just let me know. It is usually cheaper to fly into and out of St. Maarten.
We are also looking for one crew to fly into the UVI three days early to sail to and fro Antigua for the event. You will crew with OPO Members John Peterson who will be skippering the 2nd support boat for us. You will be able to spend time sailing to and from the regatta and then also sail with us for the event. For the right person we will offer a discount to sail theses two weeks. Call me and let’s talk next Monday.
Trans-At – If you want to sail across the ocean on Swan this May, we have convinced the skipper that we need to reduce the price to fill the boat. We have one OPO members going and I think Dan has one or two crew so there may be only one or two berths left. The new cost is only $1250 and not the $2750 that he was looking for last month. This is less than it would cost you to stay home (about $250 a week includes all food and boat expenses. Let me know and we can help you sing up for this Trans=at on a Swan with a pro skipper and mate.
Sail a Swan 51 from Antigua to the UK. Fly into Antigua May 4th for departure May 6th. The passage to the Azores will take 14 to 16 days. You will have three or four days to visit Peter’s Café Sport and get ready for the 10 day sail to the UK. Four OPO crew made the passage last year on the same boat with the same British pro skipper and mate and they had a great time. The cost for the Trans-at including all provisioning and boat expenses is huge bargain at $2750. (Slashed to $1250) That’s only about $500 ($250)
per week and includes all expenses except airfare. Please contact me if you are looking to book a Trans-at this spring on a good boat with a very nice and young pro-skipper.
Our Annual St. Maarten-Bermuda-Newport-NY –There is one berth left to sail with me aboard Avocation. I will know more about sailing with Murray Jacob next week. This is a great trip and we have been making it for years. If you want to join us we can talk next week.
Sail aboard Avocation or the Swan 57 Boonatsa departing the Caribbean May 8th and arriving in Newport May 23rd and NY May 24th. I will be skippering Avocation and our most popular skipper Murray Jacob will be sailing the Swan 57 back. This is a great first time passage as we start in classic Trade Winds in warmer weather and have the challenging 2nd leg from Bermuda to the States after crew get their sea legs. We cover 1500 miles in fourteen days for $2500 all inclusive. If you want to join Murray or myself, please contact us soon. I also just spoke with a pro skipper friend at the dock yesterday who runs a Swan 51. He says he is also heading north this May because he has a charter for the Bermuda Race before then sailing to Europe from Bermuda I late June. Let me know if you want to join us and learn more about the Swan 51’s plans.
Bermuda Cruising Rally – (This opportunity to sail with Tania may already be full but I will know more next week when I am home. If there is enough interested I may look for another boat to sail in the rally that I will skipper. Again I will know more next week. But if you want to sail in the rally please let me know and we can talk next week, hank)
A rare chance to sail with a true sailing celebrity. Gather in Greenport NY June 18th for departure that weekend. Stay until June 27th. Sail to Bermuda or back with Tania Aebi on a Swan 48 for $2200 for the rally and trip to Bermuda. Return Passage June 28th to July 4th Bermuda to Newport. $1800. It looks like we may also have two or three crew berths on an Amel 53 for the trip to and or from Bermuda in the rally. The costs for the Amel is $1500 for the ride down and $1300 for the rip back. We have plenty of time before the rally so just let us know if you think you are interested and we can talk more when I am in the office next month.
Opportunities
Mexico to Hawaii and then to Seattle his home port - Boat Owner, xxxxxxxxxxxxx, is a first time contact looking for crew for this passage from Mexico to HI. He plans to depart Puerto Vallarta April 23, arrive Hilo Hawaii in about one month, but you should leave about 35 days for the passage just in case. The ideal crew would also like to make the next leg to Seattle. If you can only do one leg you can ask xxxxxxxx about the 2nd leg and joining him in HI. The boat is a 1984 47 foot sloop (don’t forget to ask what kind, but a 9 foot draft may mean a performance boat.) David filled out our online form and wanted to call me with more info, but I am away from the office as you know. The trip is free with onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat and have money for shoreside expenses. I wanted to include the opportunity in this April 1st Notice so here it is. The boat seems very well equipped and xxxxxxseems a very capable skipper. Contactxxxxxxxxx for more info and I will speak with him when I am back home. The boats name is xxxxxxxxxand he has a web site. xxxxxxxxxx so you can check it out online before e-mailing. His e-mail address is xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Our online form lets owners describe there perfect crew. Here is what xxxxxxxx e-mailed:
“Someone who has done an ocean crossing and the other crew would love to do it with them again given the opportunity. Someone who likes time behind the wheel and sails by the feel of the wind instead of staring at instruments. Someone who is still excited by Dolphins one bow wave. Someone who is easy to talk to and can also be comfortable with silence. Someone who is not a picky eater, but enjoys cooking and good food and a non-smoker.”

Swan Opportunities
Newport Bermuda Race
Opportunities
Editorial – We just sailed back from the BVI’s Sunday and crew arrived Monday to get ready for the Heineken regatta. This is the 30th anniversary and our 5th regatta with Avocation. It is shaping up to be a big year and we are all very excited. We have a very good crew this year and today is the first day of two practice days with three days of racing to follow. AJ Smith, one of our OPO Swan Skippers, has a small video camera and is putting together a film for us. We have 11 other OPO members and our Sailmaker from Doyle with us. The crew is bonding together great. The next big regatta for us is less than two months away. We still have 4 berths left for Antigua Sailing Week. The details are below, but it is, for us, an 8 to 10 day regatta for you with one day of practice and six days of racing. Just e-mail Cathy in the office if you want to jon us for this or any of the Swan opportunities listed below. You only need to send in a $500 deposit now and any balance is not due until 30 days before the passage. I check e-mails when I can and will be in the office for two weeks in April right after Easter to send you logistical details. You should be able to follow the regatta at the Heineken Regatta website.and I will let you know when AJ’s video is online. Racing starts on Friday. I will try and send a recap next week after the regatta.
More web site news – it appears most members are able to fill out their profiles on our OPO web site. If you are having problems I will be back next month and we can help those who are still not done entering their online resume.. At this point, not having your profile up, will not hinder your chances to get aboard a boat. Another new feature that we are working on is a file sharing section where members will be able to post their sailing pictures and videos on the site to share with others. It is in the Beta stage and I will not be able to complete and put up until April. It should be a lot of fun.
Newport Bermuda Race – Anyone attending a “Safety-at-Sea” seminar this spring will get a copy of the Newport Bermuda Race Program that has our ad offering boat owners entered in the race this year the opportunity to contact us to get crew for the return passage. It will be very interesting to see how many calls we get. Already we have had one new owner call who says he is about to buy a boat and may even want crew for the race. He does not sound like an experienced offshore racer as he has asked about getting a navigator and two watch captains. Once he confirms that he has bought his boat, we may have several berths for the race down, when normally we expect only return passage opportunities after the race. While Avocation and myself are not in the race this year, we will be sailing down to Bermuda in the Bermuda Cruising Rally about the same time and should be able to come down to Hamilton to see any members arriving for the return passage.
Antigua Sailing Week – Fly into Antigua Thursday April 22nd and fly home May 1st. Friday is practice day and racing starts on Saturday. There are six days of racing with one lay day in the middle. We charter a support boat for people to sleep aboard for the regatta. We have only 4 berths left. We may have to charter two support boats so we are comfortable. We already have a 46 foot Cat with 6 cabins. Veteran Swan Skipper Rick Butler will be skippering her once again. She is a great party platform for après race days. If we have a crew of 12 to 14 we will et a second boat so we will be an OPO mini fleet for the regatta. This is the best, if not biggest, event of the season. Please let me know if you are interested in joining us this year. The cost for Antigua Sailing Week is $2250 which includes a berth on the support boat.
Trans-At – Sail a Swan 51 from Antigua to the UK. That’s only about $500 per week and includes all expenses except airfare. Please contact me if you are looking to book a Trans-at this spring on a good boat with a very nice and young pro-skipper.
Our Annual St. Maarten-Bermuda-Newport-NY –Sail aboard Avocation or the Swan 57 Boonatsa departing the Caribbean May 8th and arriving in Newport May 23rd and NY May 24th.
Bermuda Cruising Rally – A rare chance to sail with a true sailing celebrity.
Mexico to New Zealand – Our New Zealand connection of many years, pro skipper Chris Bone forwarded us this opportunity this week. Chris is a very accomplished delivery skipper and runs a delivery service down under. He includes us in any opportunities that start nearer to us or that sound good. If interested, please contact the owner to learn more.
Thanks, Chris Bone
Ben 32 Captain , and I, Don the retired owner are looking for 2 mature ethical people to join us on a shared cost for food and fuel, proportional basis - on a 53 ft Ketch recently refitted for a Pacific Adventure -- ultimately to arrive in NZ- presently the Ketch is in La Paz , Mexico --we will leave from Puerto Verlatta end of March early April. and visit as many Islands as the crew want !!!!
We are looking for people who have experience, are team players, happy , practical with either mechanical /electrical /navagational / cooking / musical / electronic skills. We are happy to have the potential crew join us sooner if necessary --
Please reply to this email -- xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hawaii to Australia – xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is a pro skipper and has gotten crew fro us before. He plans to depart about the 18th of April with stops in Samoa, Fiji, and New Caledonia before ending up in Coffs Harbor north of Sydney. He is estimating the trip will take about 36 days. He has some crew, including the owner, who is doing a great job of taking care of getting the nboat ready including all the safety gear. I think, when you have the owner also going, that he makes sure the boat is definitely ready since he is aboard., so the combination of owner and a pro paid skipper is the best. Richard is looking for one or two more semi-experienced crew. The trip is free with all boat expenses included. You just need to get to and from the boat. Oh yea, and this is a great boat, an Oyster 48. To find out more please contact Richard at the following contact info

OPO Winter Work
Winter Caribbean Season
Opportunities
Editorial – The OPO web meister has been tweaking the OPO web site and you should be able to copy and paste your resume to the profile. The 5000 work max setting has been deleted. The most important part of the profile is the passages you have made and the sea miles/days at sea. Please use the sea mile passage format to calculate your sea miles and sea time. Make sure you add new trips as you complete them. If you do not have much sea time and are just getting started, do not worry. Everyone starts somewhere. Emphasize your willingness to learn and follow orders and others ways you can contribute to the passage. (cooking/mechanical skills, medical training, foreign language, offering elbow grease or pre departure logistical solutions.) There are other ways to make yourself as attractive as possible. An eager new crew can be worth more than a know-it-all old sea-dog. Do not underestimate any small boat handling skills. If you can sail a small boat you can sail a big one, but not necessarily the other way around.
I am going to make it my goal to have every OPO member fill out their crew profile. When we first stared in 1993 very few members had e-mail. We started our web site in 1996. Now 100% of members have e-mail and you should all be able to enter your profile online. If you have trouble we can have our web guy answer your questions. It may take a while, but if we can get near 100% compliance then OPO will be able to boast to other professionals in the business and to boat owners and skippers that our service will allow them to look at member’s profiles and resumes after you contact them and give them permission by giving them your nickname “password”. This added member benefit and OPO feature will make our service unique and more valuable to our target market, boats owners and delivery skippers looking for crew, but also more valuable to our members. The automatic calculator for sea time and sea miles will help you keep track of your sea time which is very important if you one day plan to get your captains license, or when you need to renew after five years. Please do make it your intention to fill out your online OPO survey this month.
OPO Winter Work– We do not sit around waiting for opportunities to find us. We actively seek out offshore passage opportunities for our members. One way is to be in the Caribbean roaming around and getting the word out. Being visible at the Caribbean Regattas and networking with other delivery skippers in the islands and even individually meeting owners who are cruising helps. (This is my favorite way to promote OPO.) In March we will be attending our 5th Swan Rendezvous and presenting the best maintained Swan Award on behalf of the Swan Owners Association, which I am a board member of. My Swan Owners Association board membership is a good way to offer our services and we are featured prominently on the Swan Owners Web site. You can take a look at www.swanowners.com The picture on the home page is of our NARC Rally departure a few years ago in Newport.
We also added the biggest Caribbean magazine “All-at-Sea” to our roster of sailing magazines where we advertise to skippers looking for crew.
Once again this year I am actively pursuing the Bermuda Race committee to offer our crew network service to race participants to offer crew for the return passage from Bermuda. There will be about 125-150 boats entered in the Bermuda Race this year and I am sure some of them will be looking for crew for the return passage. I have been in e-mail touch with John Rousmienere, who is one of the lead organizers. It looks like we will get a free mention on their web site. It is hard working with an all volunteer organization, but I think we have wore them down over the years and they see the benefit of offering our service to race participants.
This June we are also helping to organize the 3rd edition of the Bermuda Cruising Rally. This departs from Greenport LI about the same time as the Bermuda Race, the 3rd week in June. Tania Aebi will be skippering Avocation and I will be on another boat for the trip down and back. There will also be opportunities to sail for free on other boats in the fleet. We will let you now as we learn who needs crew. We enjoy the rally concept and the opportunities they provide for our members, which brings us to our own Rally. If you have a boat and want to make an offshore passage this June to test systems and yourself, this is a good offshore passage to start with. Check out the rally at www.bermudacruisingrally.com
It looks like the 2010 Edition of the NARC Rally will be adding more guidance for new offshore sailors and instructional services. This year the rally grew to 31 boats. With a larger audience there is room to improve the offering for both first timers and veterans alike. One of the participants, David Lyman, on “Searcher” a Bowman 57, wants to take lead point on organizing our departure in Newport. We are going to support the effort and plan to make the rally bigger, and thus get more offshore passage opportunities form our members.
Winter Caribbean Season – Our three charter weeks and the Heineken Regatta are full. (Actually we have one berth for Heineken, but have one couple I am waiting to hear from to see if they are joining us for the Heineken Regatta or Antigua Sailing Week, but you can call to see about this last berth if you wish.) I look forward to meeting new members and repeat participants this winter. I fly down next week, but will be in e-mail touch most days. Cathy will also be checking the office phones and e-mail until she comes down for the Swan Rendezvous in March.
The next openings to join us are for Antigua Sailing Week towards the end of April.
Antigua Sailing Week – Fly into Antigua Thursday April 22nd and fly home May 1st. Friday is practice day and racing starts on Saturday. There are 5 days of racing with one lay day in the middle. We charter a support boat for people to sleep aboard for the regatta. Right now we are already half full. If we get a full compliment of crew (for Avocation that is 12 to 14 crew), I plan to charter two support boats so we are comfortable. Please let me know if you are interested in joining us this year. The cost for Antigua Sailing Week is $2250 which includes a berth on the support boat.
Trans-At – Sail a Swan 51 from Antigua to the UK. Fly into Antigua May 4th for departure May 6th. The passage to the Azores will take 14 to 16 days. You will have three or four days to visit Peter’s Café Sport and get ready for the 10 day sail to the UK. Four OPO crew made the passage last year on the same boat with a British pro skipper and mate and they had a great time. The same skipper is going this year. The cost for the Trans-at including all provisioning and boat expenses is $2750.
Bermuda Cruising Rally – A rare chance to sail with a true sailing celebrity. $1800
Buying an Offshore Boat – Many members are looking to buy a boat in the future so they can go sailing offshore on their own. Through OPO they are gaining more sea miles and time at sea, and seeing first hand what works and what does not work offshore. I often get asked what is a good offshore boat to buy. Now we have a definitive resource to answer that question. OPO member # 08 and erstwhile OPO skipper Charlie Doane has written a book, The Modern Cruising Sailboat: A Complete Guide to Design, Construction & Outfitting that has just been released by International Marine/McGraw-Hill. I have already ordered my copy. It is a hefty reference work full of lots of useful info on cruising boats in general and also includes detailed profiles of 40 specific boats. You can buy the book directly through the usual retail outlets and help boost Charlie’s official sales numbers. Or you can contact Charlie directly at charlesdoane@comcast.net and he’ll sell you a signed copy personally. He’s offering a discount for OPO members ($30, marked down from $39.95) plus shipping. Also, be sure to check out Charlie’s new blog at www.wavetrain.net and www.boatermouth.com OPO Special on the book for the month of Feb Only. Contact Charlie this month for an autographed copy and you can deduct $10 on your OPO dues in September. So you get the book for half price. Be one of the first to get your copy.
Opportunities
1) Nassau Bahamas to Annapolis MD – Boat Owner xxxxxxxxxxhas a 2008 Beneteau 43 that he will be sailing from Nassau home this May. He is looking for one crew more crew for a total of four crew. The plan is for crew to fly in May 7th for departure the next day and to plan to fly home from BWI Airport near Annapolis May 16th. xxxxxxxxxsailed south in the Caribbean 1500 and the boat is in very good shape. He has owned her since new. The trip is free with all onboard expenses but you need to get to and from the boat. To sing aboard contact xxxxxxx at xxxxxxxxxxx
2) RI – Bermuda – Norfolk VA –RI – Maine – New caller xxxxxxxxowns a very well equipped Shannon 43. He has been getting the boat and himself ready for the following passages this summer in preparation for a Trans Atlantic next year. The plans are a bit fluid but xxxxxxxxx includes enough information to get a good idea of some of the options for this year. The trips are free with crew getting to and from the boat unless specified below. Here is the itinerary that xxxxxxx sent us along with some notes about himself and the boat. Please contact either one of us if you are interested in learning more and signing aboard. His e-mail is xxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
RI to BERMUDA - leaving approx. July 5 - 3 berths available
I'd like to find at least one other companion who has made this or a similar trip before.
If you are also staying on for the next leg you can stay aboard while in harbor. (In that circumstance you would help with laundry, watering and provisioning.)
BERMUDA to VA - leaving approx. July 16 - 2-3 berths available
I'm inviting my son, Lewis, on this leg if his schedule permits.
Both of the ocean legs are in the 4-8 day range.
VA to RI - leaving approx. July 23 - 1-4 berths available
We will coast up the Chesapeake, visit Annapolis, transit the C&D canal, and jump from Cape May NJ back to RI, taking a week or so. (Mostly coastal, 1 night at sea)
I expect to spend at least 2 nights in Annapolis so if anybody just wants to do from there to the end that would be fine.
RI to PORTLAND ME - leaving mid-August
After a trip back home and some time at Bristol Marine, I'll take it easy getting back to Maine, possibly solo. 1-way transportation provided as I am moving the car back to Maine. (Mostly coastal, possibly a night or two at sea)
“By the time of the trip I will have experience of about 5,000 cruising miles including the training run from USVI to Norfolk this May. I'll also have ASA certification through level 108, including celestial and coastal navigation, plus training in medical procedures (SSCA), diesel (Mass Maritime), and safety at sea (USS, LRSE). I have lived aboard Isabella 3 summers, cruising between NYC and Mt Desert
The boat has been thoroughly refit and includes the usual offshore equipment such as life raft, jack lines, EPIRB, sat phone, SSB, radar, AIS, flares, harnesses, para anchor, 200 gals water, 100 gals fuel, etc. Refrigeration, freshwater, waste systems, and bilge pumps have also been renewed, along with fuel and electrical systems. With all that, the boat is comparatively low tech, without water maker, generator, bow thrusters, or air conditioning. Most of the sails and running rigging are also new.”
3) Bermuda Cruising Rally – Boat Owner xxxxxxxxx is sailing in the Rally this year and would like to start lining up crew early. He gives us lots of information about himself and the boat. If you are interested please contact him and make further plans. The dates for the rally are roughly June 17th to July 5th for both legs.
Trinity – Crew Roster and Sailing Bios
Owner/Captain: xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx(40) has been sailing since the age of ten, having participated in numerous training and racing programs. In his earlier years he sailed racing dinghies, primarily International 505s and 470s, with the past 20-years spent sailing boats 30-feet and larger. He has owned Trinity, a Freedom 36, for the past seven years, primarily sailing singlehanded on regional excursions as far north as Casco Bay, Maine, and south to Nantucket Sound and the ‘islands’. He has captained several bareboat trips in the Virgin Islands. In addition to basic seamanship and safety courses over years, the mechanically-inclined Maggiacomo has attended diesel engine service and repair classes and has completed numerous mechanical upgrades and necessary repairs at sea.
Personal/Other Info: xxxxxxxxxxxx is an exec. at a bank based in Boston.xxxxxxxxand his wife, Cecile, have three children and reside in Newbury, Massachusetts. Other personal interests include music, running, cycling, and automobiles.
Passenger: xxxxxxxxxxxthirteen year old daughter will be accompanying her father on the Bermuda sailing trip. Olivia is an aspiring marine biologist and is the oldest ofxxxxxxxxxx three children. Olivia has assisted her father on numerous trips and, truth be told, is currently the only other person in the family with a determined interest in sailing.
Crew:
We are looking for three experienced crew members to participate in the Bermuda Cruising Rally, from Greenport Long Island to Bermuda, including the return trip which, while still being determined, may be back to home port (Marblehead). Female crew members are encouraged given that the owner’s thirteen year old daughter will be on board. Crew members must be deemed acceptable crew for insurance purposes. Obviously, must be non-smoker/drinker while on board.
Freedom 36 ‘xxxxxxxxxx’ information:
The Freedom 36, designed by Gary Mull and made by Freedom Yachts (Tillotson Pearson, Inc.), has gained a reputation as an easy sailing high-quality boat with a large interior. Trinity has received constant care and maintenance. Traditional Freedom carbon fiber spar and sloop rig with all sail controls lead to the cockpit, which leaves the deck wide open for access. A self-tending jib and all lines leading into the cockpit again, make this boat an easy short-handed sailboat. She has two private staterooms, a spacious main saloon with bulkhead mounted fold away table, sit-down navigation station, and lots opening ports and hatches for ventilation. "Trinity" has been recently upgraded with electronics. She has everything needed for coastal, offshore, shorthanded cruising. This boat is in very good condition and a pleasure to look at, particularly with her navy blue hull. Photos attached below… Contact Mike at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
4) Skipper/mates position – xxxxxxxxxxxowns a very nice Beneteau 47 that he keeps at xxxxxxxxx Yacht Club in xxxxxxxxxxxxxNY on the north shore of Long Island. I have delivered his boat from our east back to xxxxxxxxx the past 3 or 4 years. xxxxxx called asking to fill a unique opportunity to stay aboard his boat full time (for someone that lives farther away) or part time (for someone living closer) to do light maintenance and sail withxxxxxxxor to deliver the boat to pints east this summer. The position would be from mid to late June to the Labor Day Weekend. If you were to move the boat out east you would call us for another one or two crew to make the trip. Even though you would live aboard the bat on a mooring part when in xxxxxxxxxx the boa has a very nice center console inflatable dinghy to get around. Salary would be in the “spending only” range of a couple of hundred a week. You can call me to ask more about the opportunity as I envision it and of course call xxxxx at xxxxxxx or e-mail xxxxxxxxxx

Winter Caribbean Season
Opportunities
Editorial – A month ago I thought I would be around most of January. Instead next week I am departing on the first of two deliveries that will take up most of the month. I have one OPO member going on each trip with owners and friends making up the rest of the crew. Next week from January 4th to the 8th will be the best time to get in touch with me and plan some sailing this winter. After that Cathy will be monitoring the office.
Members who get Cruising World Magazine will enjoy this month’s column by Fatty Goodlander. It is about delivery skippers and delivering boats. Fatty is very funny and very good at listing the good attributes of a delivery crew. Make sure you read it or read it online if you can.
If you have not already filled out your OPO profile online we have new printed instructions in this notice to help you get started. I have filled out my profile and you can view my resume on the site. My web nickname to view my profile is “hank”. This was the first time I have written down my sea miles. I kept good records the last 15 years after I had to gather my sea time for the Captains License the first time. In my profile I only listed trips I had in my records or old invoice books. I am missing a lot of deliveries from 1986 until 1991 so fell short of my perceived 200,000 plus offshore miles, but felt I should not list sea miles that I can not document. I also did not include most of the sailing on my own Tayana 37 unless they were long passages and nothing on smaller dinghies during nine years in junior sailing programs, 3 summers driving a launch or the 5 years on my Dads Cal 2-30 all before age 19. I have almost 2000 days at sea (not including 7 years working offshore oil rigs nor 14 years living aboard) and 170,000 miles. Take a look and see if you can find the deliveries you may have done with me.
Please fill out your profile and log your sea time. Please make sure to update your sea time after each passage you make. The web site will automatically keep track of your sea miles and sea time. You will then be able to direct prospective boat owners and delivery skippers to your resume on the opo web site making it much easier for them to choose you to sail with them. Just direct them to the site and give them your nickname.
You may want to print and save the following instructions to help you fill out your online survey.

New iPhone App by OPO Member
This iphone app has been developed by OPO member Thaddeus Kubis and is a new tool for keeping track of your logs. Thad sent us the following press release about his new ap. The cost for the application is $3.99
New Sailing iPhone app released
SailingRx releases Quick Logsm
Using an iPhone based app for tracking your sailing adventure is the key goal of this new interactive tool. The iPhone app has been conceived and developed by U.S.G.C licensed Captain and delivery skipper Thaddeus B. Kubis and has been designed to be used by sailors. A power boating version is currently being developed as well.
The app titled Quick Logsm includes entry pages to start a new log, view past trips, and other sailing related online resources.
Entry screens for destinations, track your route and even the ability to add a photo of your own boat, photos of the trip and photo of your destination are just a click away.
Quick Log allows you to record your port of embarkation, time and other “exiting” data. Record your course, make in route trip comments, log your position (Lat/Long), and include weather conditions, sea state, wind speed and direction on your iPhone. List your crewmembers, emergency contact information and email your float plan to your home base.
Once you reached your destination you can save the route. Need to review a past trip, just open to the Archived Quick logs screen and all your stored trips are ready for you to review, relive and enjoy again.
Quick Log will be available via the iPhone app store in January 2010.
For additional information contact Thaddeus B. Kubis at thad@sailingrx.com.

Winter Caribbean Season – We hope you can join us for some sailing in the islands this winter. This is a great opportunity to meet each other and talk about your future plans. Plus I do not know anywhere you can sail on a captained charter for about $100 a day. Here are the dates and the opportunities to sail with us this winter. Starting February 11th in St. Maarten we will offer two weeks of charter options to join us in the BVI. Anyone joining the first week will fly into St. Maarten Thursday Feb 11th for departure the next day for the BVI. Crew change will be each Saturday in Tortola. You can join us for 10 days (Feb 11th) and fly home from Tortola Feb 20th or stay two weeks and fly home from Tortola Feb 27th or join us for three weeks and sail back to St. Maarten with us for Heineken Regatta. We will be back in St. Maarten Monday March 1st. The cost is $1000 per person per week plus we split dockage and provisioning 4 or 5 ways among the crew which works out to be about $125 to $150 per week.
Once Again to make sure you have the dates and places to fly into:
Week I Fly into St. Maarten Friday Feb 11thth and sail over to the BVI’s and stay aboard until Saturday Feb 20th. We start with an overnight passage to the BVI’s and then spend a week cruising. Price $1000 per week. Fly home from Tortola on Feb 20th. You can also make round trip flight arrangement to fly into and home from Tortola planning to join us Saturday Feb 13th in Roadtown Village Cay Marina anytime on Saturday and fly home the next week Feb 20th.
Week II Fly into Tortola Sat Feb 20th and spend a week until Feb 27th with a round trip ticket to Tortola. Or you can stay aboard for the sail back to St. Maarten and fly home from there on Monday March 1st. to make it a 10 day get-a-way
Either option can get you 10 days for $1000.
Option III – Another option is to stay in St. Martin for the Heineken Regatta for a full two or three weeks in the Caribbean which is a good combination of cruising and racing.
The details for the regatta:
30th Annual Heineken Regatta
This will be an extra big year for the Heineken Regatta since it is the 30th anniversary. We have 2 days of practice and a near new set of sails so we will be very competitive. The price for the Heineken Regatta, which includes accommodations across the street at the Pelican Resorts in their new building on the water, is $2500. Bring a non-sailing spouse for only $850 more for accommodations for the week. Our Sailmaker, Mark Washeim, from Doyle will be back again this year for the regatta. A $500 deposit will reserve a berth for you with the balance not due until one month before the regatta.
Dates: Fly into St. Maarten on Monday March 1st and move into the crew quarters. Tuesday we finish getting the boat ready to race and we practice on Wednesday and Thursday for racing Friday through Sunday. Sunday is the final day of racing and the big Party on Kim-Sha Beach. Crew depart on Monday March 7th, although if you have trouble getting a flight you can stay onboard since I will be in St. Maarten that week.
If you would like to join us for a week or more in the Caribbean sailing a captained Swan 48 please let me know.

NARC Wrap up
Winter Caribbean Season
Opportunities
Editorial
– December is a slow delivery month as boats are where they plan to be for the holidays and people stay put for the holidays. So it is a good time to plan your winter get-a-way in February. We have printed our winter schedule for the weeks leading up to the Heineken Regatta. Let us know if you want to join us this winter. Some crew join us for a week in the BVI and then follow up with the Heineken Regatta for two weeks of sailing.
This month we are working on the web site, the web store and planning the summer schedule. We are thinking of going to Europe to attend the Swan Worlds which we missed in 2008. If we do we will have sailing opportunities in the med the summer of 2010, along with a Trans-at to Europe in June and the ARC next fall.
I will be in or near the office until early February. It is a good time of year to contact us if you are looking for something special or want help moving your offshore pursuits along faster. If you are looking to buy a boat soon we can also help with free advice. Many OPO members have started with a smaller boat or no boat at all and then sailed with us for a few years and now are buying or have bought a boat and call us to join our rallies or to get crew for long passages. We are happy to help turn you into an OPO member who calls us for crew rather than to crew.
NARC Rally
- The 10th NARC Rally was a big success with 31 boats sailing from Newport this year. We left on time and had a one-tack under 4 day passage to Bermuda. Others encountered weather and had more stories to tell. In Bermuda, we had a mutiny, crew changes and stories to interpret. If you were in Bermuda you would have been able to choose among two or three boats for a passage to the Caribbean.
Plans next year include adding a final destination party to the event in St. Maartin to keep the fleet together on the 2nd leg. By keeping the same free format we plan to increase the fleet to 40 or more boats. The more boats we have the more crew opportunities we will have for our members.
Some remarks from boat owners:
Many thanks for organizing a great rally and a great social gathering. It was terrific meeting new sailors from around the Caribbean and catching up with old friends.
Andy
NARC was a great way to get to the Islands and I really appreciate all of your assistance.
We had big winds and waves, no wind or waves, sailing, motoring, etc . . . all of the usual stuff . . . my mates from Okoboji had a big time adventure . . . both on land and at sea.

Winter Caribbean Season
Opportunities
Editorial – The November 1st “Notice to OPO Mariners” is going out early this month as we head to Newport for the start of the NARC Rally. We have 29 boats signed up and many OPO members among the crew. If you are in the Newport area and wold like to come to our dinner on Saturday Night at 5:00 pm you are welcome to join us at the Rhino Bar in Newport, right next to the Newport Yachting Center. It is $20 per person at the door.
If you could not join us this fall, plan to join us this winter in the Caribbean. As soon as I get back from the NARC Rally we will start taking deposits for this winter for both the regattas and for the weeks of charter opportunities we have planned. Dates listed below.
OPO Web Site – The web site once again has been relegated to a winter project. In December we will finalize written instructions for everyone to get their log books and profiles filled out and working to our advantage. Until then we will be sailing.
Seven Seas Gam – The Seven Sea Cruising Association is made up of thousands of members who do a lot of sailing. We reserved a booth space at last years Annual Gam in Melbourne Florida as they had moved it to December and we were not offshore. This year they moved it back to November so we could not attend in person, but we have a full page ad in their journal. We are working on getting a relationship going with the association so we can better reach their membership and the many opportunities that may arise from being a member in the organization. If any OPO members are also members of the SSCA look to promote OPO to other members and let the association know OPO can be a great value added service to their membership.
Winter Caribbean Season – For the past several years we have been offering OPO members the opportunity to join us for some sailing in the Caribbean each February running up to the Heineken Regatta. Starting February 6th in St. Maarten we will offer three weeks of charter options to join us in the BVI. Anyone joining the first week will fly into St. Maarten Saturday Feb 6th for departure the next day for the BVI. Crew change will be each Saturday in Tortola. You can join us for one week departing Feb 13th, two weeks departing Feb 20th or stay all three weeks and sail back to St. Maarten with us for Heineken Regatta so that would have us back in St. Maarten Monday March 1st. The cost is $1000 per person per week plus we split dockage and provisioning 4 or 5 ways among the crew which works out to be about $125 to $150 per week. We have had crew in the past join us in the BVI for a week or two and then stay on for the Heineken Regatta so you would then fly home from St. Maarten after the regatta which would be
Monday March 7th.
I will be the skipper. This is a great way to see the BVI on a Swan and enjoy a tour of the BVI’s. We may use one week to sail over to the Spanish Virgin Islands if the crew wants to sail over for the week.
Week I Fly into St. Maarten Sat Feb 6th and fly home from Tortola BVI Saturday Feb 13th
Week II Fly into Tortola Sat 13th and fly home Saturday Feb 20th
Week III Fly into Tortola Sat Feb 20th and fly back from St. Maarten Sunday February 28th.
Stay One, Two, or all Three weeks for only $1000 per week. Couples get the aft main owners cabin on first come first serve basis. Send in a $500 deposit to reserve a week or more now.
30th Annual Heineken Regatta
The price for the Heineken Regatta, which includes accommodations across the street at the Pelican Resorts in their new building on the water, is $2500. Bring a non-sailing spouse for only $950 more for accommodations for the week. Our Sailmaker comes to teach more about racing and we have a pro Bowman (Tim Day from Blue Water Sailing Magazine). A $500 deposit will reserve a berth for you with the balance not due until one month before the regatta.
Dates: Fly into St. Maarten on Monday March 1st and move into the crew quarters that night. Tuesday we finish getting the boat ready to race and we practice on Wednesday and Thursday for racing Friday through Sunday. Depart on Monday March 7th.
If you would like to join us for a week or more in the Caribbean sailing a captained Swan 48 please let me know and you can place a $500 deposit to reserve a berth for the 30th Annual Heineken Regatta.
LateSail – While we are on the subject of the Caribbean and Chartering, OPO member James Gilbert is the new US Agent for Latesail.com which is a discount charter brokerage offering charter discounts throughout the World. Think of Jim as a consolidator offering charter companies a way to get use out of excess inventory. Call Jim and tell him what you are looking for and where and you can name a price and Jim may be able to find you something. If you are looking to charter this winter call OPO Member Jim Gilbert at 877-292-0730 or e-mail him at jgilbert@latesail.com and see how he can help you get good deals on charters.

OPO Web site
Boat Shows
Winter Caribbean Season
Opportunities
Editorial - Twenty boats have signed up for the NARC Rally and many members are in contact with skippers and making plans to help them sail south. I am sure we will have more boats join and more crew needs both for the NARC rally and for other boats moving with the change of seasons. If you think you will have trouble signing aboard a boat because you have not been offshore yet, one quick way to get miles under your belt is to sail with myself or Captain Murray on one of our Swans. There are only two berths left, one on each boat.
We organize and sponsor the NARC Rally and make it free to attract more boats and more press. This is a great way to market our message and The OPO Motto “to find and create more quality offshore passage opportunities for our members”. If you hear about someone needing crew and you can’t help make the trip, tell them about OPO. If you run into someone at a boat show or on the waterfront, who may need crew, tell them about OPO. We make the service free to boat owners the first time they call so you can tell them we do not cost anything and that we are indeed a free service. But please first make sure they would be someone you would want to go sailing with and on a seaworthy boat. If you would not go sailing with the people or on their boat, then do not tell them about us. OPO Members can be a big help in finding more quality opportunities for other members. Do tell others about OPO. Just remember to tell them to call 1-800-4-PASSAGe.
Another way we grow and a part of our marketing efforts are by the articles and mentions in the sailing magazines about OPO. If you have not read Tania Aebi’s column in Latitudes and Attitudes October Issue, please do so at www.latsandatts.net/magazine You have to open the on-line magazine and click the mouse to pages 22/23. Tania does a much better job writing about the Bermuda Cruising Rally (because it is about meJ and not the rally), than I do mentioning her in my article about the rally in the September issue of Windcheck magazine at www.windcheckmagazine.com Somehow we manage to get OPO written about or mentioned several times a year. If we get 25 or 30 boats in our NARC Rally this year we will have 50 next year. Now that is something to write about.
This is also the best time year to mention one defensive way we have of protecting passage opportunities for our members. Please do not pass on the contact information to people who are not OPO members. Each opportunity that a non-OPO member gets is one less opportunity for our members and I consider this “theft of service.” We usually hear from boat owners and skippers and learn what crew they have signed aboard.. If we learn that someone found out about the opportunity from another member, we contact that member to let them know that they can be de-activated. Non-members are welcome to look at our e-mails on the message board. They are posted a few days after we get them and lack the contact information. You can refer people to our web site so they can see what type and frequency of opportunities there are. If we feel that this open policy is not working we can add safety measures and hindrances to the process that would slow things down and complicate the system for everyone. Simply said. “Please do not share the opportunities with non-members.”
Thanks.
Non- Members, friends and family, are welcome to sign aboard any of the Swan program or Regattas or charter opportunities that we offer. They are restricted from sailing through any of our e-mail and notice opportunities as that takes a berth away from non-members. The exception of course is if you are married or cohabitating. It would be unreasonable of me to expect you to hide your e-mails from your spouse. Some boat owners are couples want to sail with another couple and we do not insist that two people from the same household join. So please do not think you have to “sneak” a spouse aboard.
OPO Web Site
Many members have filled out a members profile or resume on our web site. Others have tried and failed. Some like me are a little confused and not filled theirs out yet. Mine will take a couple of weeks so I am saving my log entries for a winter project. I may even turn it into a game and let OPO members match their log book with mine. They can look back and see which trips they did with me and then we will fill in my log. I have kept track of my miles and sea time over the last 15 years. Since the USCG wants boat name and owner and miles and days at sea (they did not ask for crew names) I did not keep track either.
The new web site is set up so you can add to your log book and your profile page will keep track of sea time and sea miles. This is very helpful to crew collecting their sea miles for sport or to collect towards a license. The Coast Guard counts four hours on any given day as a full day at sea so an overnight starting at dusk and finishing the next day counts as two.
This month we will send all active members instructions how to use the profile section of the web site and how it is intended to be used. This winter the goal will be to get everyone to fill out their online profile and use it to their benefit. This will not be a facebook type situation where everyone will be able to see your profile and mess with it. Only those boat owners and skippers that you contact will be able to view your profile with your permission and it will not be open to other members or the public. We will then be able to do away with collecting written resumes.
I have learned that a web site is an evolving entity. We are just finishing tweaking the system to work the way we want before adding product to the web site store. Our first goal is to have a lot of good free information on the web site. One new section is about bringing pets to other countries. There are free “crew agreements forms” and checklists that you can copy. The new profile section of the web site will better help you sign aboard with other skippers and boat owners. The online profile and log book will be a blessing each time you have to renew your license. When we start to add product to our web site it will be marine related and good deals. Look for the new written e-mail instructions explaining the web site.
Annapolis Boat Show – Each year we make plans to meet with any OPO members who are attending the Annapolis Boat Show early in the week. This year I will be there from Wednesday Evening Oct 7th to Saturday morning Oct 10th. I will be at the show on both Thursday and Friday. To keep things simple I would like to meet at the same time both days. On Thursday Gary Jobson is speaking at 4:00 pm in one of the conference rooms at the Marriot. We can meet right after the seminar (I think 5:15 pm) and see who wants to meet for drinks and dinner. This is the same location we have met people in years past, just at the end of the show rather than in the middle, and both days not just on Thursday. So the plan is to meet on the upper food court deck up the steps by the Pusser’s Rum Bar. This is just outside the seminar rooms for the boat show. We will meet 5:00 or 5:15 both Thursday and Friday night. If you are at the show either day and think you will not be able to find us, please let me know and we can exchange cell numbers.
We have five OPO members and me sailing to the Annapolis Show from Huntington NY departing his Monday at 10:00 am. We have room for one more person if you want to join us for the trip to see the show. You are welcome to stay aboard with the other crew until after the show Friday October 9th. There is a fee and we share some expenses between the crew, but if you want to join us next week and see the show, please call or e-mail right away.
NARC Rally - The 10th Annual Rally appears to be a success as we have had a record number of non-Swan boats entering. Some OPO members have signed aboard as crew. The new editor of Cruising World magazine asked to be invited to our going away party to cover the rally for the magazine. If any OPO member in the Newport area wants to come join us that night they are welcome. The cost is $20 for dinner. It is a month away so I will send out a reminder the week before to see who may wish to see us off that weekend in Newport. OPO members are always welcome to come. In fact usually someone is looking for crew the last weekend so if you have not found a boat you can come to Newport with a packed sea bad and passport.
We still have two berths available on the Swans, one each with Murray Jacob on the Swan 57 and one berth with me on the 48. There will be a cameraman aboard the Swan 57 filming for a pilot presentation for a reality show. It will make the trip even more memorable and special as I am sure you will get a copy of the tape. If you are having trouble getting a free crew berth, you do not need to miss the Rally this year. Just ask me for more info.
Maarten after the regatta which would be Monday March 8th.
The price for the Heineken Regatta which included accommodations across the street at the Pelican Resorts in their new building on the water is $2500.
If you would like to join us for a week or more in the Caribbean sailing a captained Swan 48 please let me know and you can place a $500 deposit to reserve a berth.
Opportunities
We have been sending out the Opportunities as soon as they come and I am usually speaking with a couple of owners at a time making sure they are good opportunities. Here are a few spots with OPO member Dave Skolnick who you can meet at the Annapolis Show this year if you e-mail him and offer to sail on one of his trips this Nov and December.
Annapolis MD to Abacos Bahamas - OPO member, skipper and boat owner Dave Skolnick is looking for two crew to sail with him aboard his Hallberg-Rassy 40 named Auspicious. Dave sailed Auspicious from the HR factory in Sweden to Annapolis in 2006 so the boat is more than equipped for this seven or eight day trip.
You can also count on eating well aboard Auspicious. The plan is to
leave Annapolis 1 December and cross the Gulf Stream directly off the
mouth of Chesapeake Bay before heading south to clear into the Bahamas
at Green Turtle Cay. The first few days may be chilly so be prepared
for cold watches; Auspicious has a forced-air diesel heater so
conditions below will be warm and cozy. Crew are welcome to spend a
few days in the Abacos but are requested to be off the boat by
December 11. Flights home from MHH (Marsh Harbor) are readily
available. The trip is free with onboard expenses and provisions included, but you need to get to and from the boat.
Contact Dave at
Return Passage
Exumas Bahamas to Annapolis MD – This is the return trip and Dave is looking for two crew for this return passage as well. If spending some time offshore is more
attractive than one more Christmas with family you may be interested in joining Dave Skolnick and his girl friend Janet on Auspicious for the run from Georgetown to Annapolis leaving Georgetown December 17 –20 and heading North. Transit time is dependent on weather but could be anywhere between 6 and 9 days. Dave is looking for two crew on this trip, offshore all the way. The last few days may be chilly so be
prepared for cold watches; Auspicious has a forced-air diesel heater so conditions below will be warm and cozy. This passage is also free with all onboard food and boat expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat.

Editorial
Annual Dues
Boat Shows
Fall Schedule
Opportunities
Editorial – Unlike most people, (think school teachers and kids), this is my favorite time of year. Boats owners are starting to make plans for the winter, boat show season is starting, and fall racing picks up, which all means it is the start of the busy season and annual migration, which for us, culminates in the NARC (North American Rally to the Caribbean) about Nov 1st.
We will have a record number of boats in the NARC. The “free” in the “10th Annual Free NARC Rally”, is getting peoples attention. We are planning to have over 20 boats and more opportunities to offer to our members.
But what about that often repeated “some offshore experience required” that seems to appear often in the notices. The insurance companies once again get the blame for asking boat owners and skippers if they have enough experienced hands onboard. This is more true in the fall than in the spring because it is a rougher time of year. In one way this helps create more opportunities for members as owners need more crew. However there is a catch-22 here. How can one get offshore experience if they can not get aboard to get that first offshore passage under their belts? Many people take advantage of our Swan Program and go sailing offshore with us their first time. In years past we had up to ten Swans and 50 people sailing south in a Swan and is why we started the NARC Rally nine years ago. This year we will only have two Swans with Pro skippers inviting people to join us for the trip south. I will be skippering the Swan 48 Avocation and our most popular skipper. Murray Jacob, an Ozzie in size and real life, will be skippering a mint Swan 57. If you are interested in a gaurenteed best 18 days of your life, call or send me an e-mail. We also have two shorter options for those with less time and budget.
*Annual Dues – Another reason why it is my favorite time of year is that September is also the month annual dues are due. Annual dues remain the same as the last two years which is $125. Gold Card Members (and you know who you are) pay $150. (Another Gold Card Swan Opportunity should be going out shortly.) We stopped mailing invoices a few years ago so please make a note that this is your reminder to pay annual dues. If you already paid we thank you. You can make checks out to Offshore Passage Opportunities and mail to PO Box 2600 Halesite NY 11743. We also take credit cards so and you can pay annual dues on our web site at www.sailopo.com
Boat Shows - We have found it is more fun to sail to the local shows rather than drag a 10 x 10 boat show booth there and stand in it for 4 or 5 days. We have two boats, a Swan 48 and Swan 56, sailing from Huntington to Newport and back. We will be at the show on Thursday Red Carpet Day. We have shortened the cruise to five days at $100 per day or if you want to just make the one 2way sail to the show it is $300 from Tuesday to Friday morning. We depart Tuesday Sept 15th and will be back on Saturday Sept 19th. We have four berths left. It may be fun to have crew sail one way on the 48 and the other way on the 56 or visa-versa. We will work out the details once we have a full crew and I will send more details out later this week. Call if you want to join us.
Annapolis Boat Show – Only Avocation is sailing south for the show and we have three berths left for the trip down. The boat is not taking crew back. If you are interested in sailing the “better leg” (as in it is usually downwind), let me know. This is a full 48 to 54 hours underway including a trip down the East River through NYC. This is a good taste of offshore sailing and we will be in Annapolis by Wednesday October 7th and you can stay aboard the boat until Friday noon. We plan to dock right next door to the show. We can arrive Sunday October 4th or Monday the 5th for departure by 10:00 am. This sailing adventure is also 5 days. The cost is $800 for the trip down plus sharing expendables.
NARC Rally – Enough said in the editorial. Call if you want to sail on a Swan. This is a great first time offshore and also the only way to be 100% sure you will be on a great boat with a great pro skipper.
Caribbean Season – Our web site has also been updated with the dates for our Caribbean Regatta Season. We will be sailing in the Heineken Regatta, BVI Spring Festival and Antigua Sailing Week. If you need the dates well in advance please visit our wed site at www.sailopo.com
OPO Member Bernie Weiss continues his fall classes for those living in the Western end of Ct or NY border. We at OPO are happy to help any members’ efforts to promote the sailing lifestyle or grow offshore sailing for the average person.
New "Diesels for Dummies" Classes Scheduled In Stamford
"Diesels For Dummies," a timely boating workshop for owners of marine diesel engines, has been scheduled in Stamford for three dates in September:
Tuesday 22 Sept, 4:00 - 7:00 pm
Thursday 24 Sept, 4:00 - 7:00 pm
Saturday 26 Sept, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
"It's the same class, but because of the growing popularity of this workshop, we are offering it on three dates," says the instructor, Captain Bernie Weiss. All classes will be held at Brewer Yacht Haven in Stamford.
Subjects covered in the workshop include how to winterize the engine; changing the lubricating oil, oil filter, and fuel filter; how to "bleed" or "vent air" out of a fuel line; how to check V-belt tension; how to start a stubborn engine; how to diagnose over-heating problems; trouble-shooting other common problems such as sudden engine failure; questions about fuel additives; simple operating procedures that prolong the life of the engine; interpreting smoke signals; etc. For "hands on" instruction and demonstrations, Cap'n Bernie will bring a diesel engine into the classroom. "The emphasis is on routine maintenance by the engine's owner," he says, "to minimize calls to a mechanic for emergency service and serious repairs."
For further information and to register for any of these workshops, call (203.329.2503) or email (bw@pro-pub.com) Captain Bernie. Registration is usually $175, but is reduced for OPO members to $150. The fee includes background reading provided in advance, and a package of reference materials for use in class and take-home.
Opportunities
Huntington NY to Newport RI – I will be delivering a new Beneteau 40 from Huntington NY to Newport for the boat show. One or two crew are welcome to join me for this overnight passage. I plan to depart Sunday afternoon/ early evening before dark September 13th. The trip will take about 16 to 18 hours and I will rent a car for the return back on Monday so I can drop you off along the way or you can come back to Huntington with me. We do not need a lot of gear and plan to keep the boat very neat. The trip is free and the car ride is free, you just need to get to and from the boat. Please give me a call if you are interested
Newport RI to Huntington NY - I have one member for the return trip on Monday September 21st, after the boat show, but if another member wants to join us for the trip back from Newport to Huntington after the show they are welcome. Call if you want to join me.
Jamestown RI to Cape Fear NC – This is a repeat from last week. Xxxx did get one crew, but he has room for one or two more crew for this great learning experience which is part offshore and part intra-coastal waterway. The trip covers many of the miles that a qualified sailor and skipper need to experience. OPO skipper XXX XXXXXX is looking for one or maybe 2 crew for a delivery of an Island Packet 35 from Jamestown RI to Cape Fear NC. It is a solid well maintained boat that Xxxx has moved before and that I first moved about 3 years ago. The trip may take as long as 6 or 7 days if the wind is out of the south and you need to go inside the Intra-coastal waterway for the 2nd half of the trip. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included. If interested please e-mail at XXXxxxxx@optonline.net
Norfolk VA to Newport – OPO member Xxx Xxxxx is looking for one or two crew to join him near Norfolk VA October 15th for a two week leisurely trip to Newport for the start of the NARC Rally. The boat is a luxurious 58 foot “Voyage” Catamaran. You may remember Xxxxxx crew requests from last winter in the Bahamas. This is a leisurely trip up the coast to kill time before the November 1st “insurance companies ok” to depart. Xxxxx asks crew to pitch in for consumable and helping sail the boat plus you need to get to and from the boat. Crew would plan to depart the boat in Newport by Friday October 30th, but Xxxxx expects to be in Newport early that week if you want to depart sooner. You can e-mail Xxxxx at Xxxxxxx@hotmail.com
NARC – Newport to Soper’s Hole Tortola BVI – Xxxxx is also looking for one or two crew for the passage south on his 58' Voyage Catamaran. He will be sailing in the NARC Rally and after Bermuda sailing to the BVI’s. Same as above with you getting to and from the boat and kicking in towards consumables and running expenses. You can e-mail Xxxxx at Xxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com
Newport RI to Nanny Cay Tortola - Captain Xxxx is a tanker captain. He got involved with a 1984 Swan 48 that he will be sailing south to the Caribbean departing the same weather window as we are from Newport about the same time. He is looking for two crew to join him and another ship captain and maybe one or two other friends, but would like to have one or two OPO members as he thinks not all his crew may show up since they are coming from Europe and one is ill. Xxxxx has been working on the boat and getting her in shape for the trip. The boat belongs to a German owner who bought her after sitting in California for 4 years. The boat is a rare lifting keel boat. Xxxxx first surveyed the boat for the owner and they became friends. Another skipper tried to sail her to Europe earlier this year and had to turn back. This is “Plan B” to bring the boat to the Caribbean this year and sail her to Europe next spring so there may be Tran-at opportunities in the future as well. The name of the boat is “Xxxx Xxxxxx”. Xxxx splits costs among the crew which he expects to be about $20 a day and he wants crew to plan 3 weeks for the trip. You pay transportation to and from the boat. If you get in early to the Caribbean you can cruise around for a week or fly home early. If interested please contact Jan at Xxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
Bermuda to St. John USVI - Boat owner Mr. Xxxx Xxxxxxx is looking for one experienced crew to join them for the 2nd leg of the NARC Rally. Xxxxxx has a 1990 Hinckley Southwester named “Xxxxxxxx” that is like new after being refitted at the Hinckley yard in Maine. He has three other crew for the first leg. Xxxxx has owned her since 2005 and it has all the offshore equipment. She participated in the 2007 Marion-Bermuda Race.
Crew should plan on arriving in Bermuda Sunday Nov 8th in time for our fish fry that evening. The 2nd leg of the NARC will most likely depart by Wednesday Nov 11th. Allow 7 days to St. John USVI so plan on flying home about Von 18th to 20th. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included. You just need to get to and from the boat. If available please e-mail Xxxxxxx at Xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxx.com
Stonington CT to Bermuda to Antigua – OPO member and boat owner, Xxxxxx Xxxxxxx is getting back from Europe Nov 1st so can not depart until Nov 5th for Bermuda so he can not join the NARC, but we may run into the crew in Bermuda. Xxxxxxx has a 1994 X-Yacht 442 with all the offshore gear. (I have delivered X-Yachts and they are very well built boats). Xxxxxxx is looking for three crew with some offshore experience. He plans to depart Nov 5th, or best weather window after that. The trip will take about 18 to 20 days planning on contingencies. Xxxxxxx has gotten crew from OPO before. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat. If interested please contact Xxxxxxxx atXxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
Bermuda Race return for June 2010 – Dr Xxxxxx Xxxxxxxx was referred to us by an OPO members who crews for him. He is looking very early for the return passage from Bermuda because he has been doing them for so many years on a big boat that he keeps needing to find new crew. They have an extensive web site at www.whisperraceboat.com for more information. If you are interested please contact him at Xxxxxxxxxxxxx@aol.com This is what he e-mailed us.
“We are sailing (race) to Bermuda next June ... 2010 and looking for some sails to help bring the boat back. WE have often tried to identify sailors the fall before- giving a chance to meet them plus learn the boat.
Our boat is based in NE - right now moored Martha's Vineyard. Are there sailors in the NE area- Boston, CT who might be interested. THANK YOU>

Bermuda Cruising Rally
Fall Schedule
Opportunities
Editorial – Last weekend we attended the 1st Annual Swan Rendezvous organized by the American Swan Association, of which I am a board member. It went very well with 24 boats sailing in two divisions of 12 boats each. We placed 3rd in the Cruising Division behind “Clover III” a Swan 60 and “Crescendo” a Swan 44 just back from winning the Marion Bermuda Race overall. The best part is Cathy says she is starting to like racing again.
Future plans for the Association, besides a repeat next summer, may include revising the BVI Swan Rendezvous this winter. We have been to the last four events before last years cancelled Rendezvous, and would like to see it return.
Some OPO members, more the newer members than old, may question why we are always mentioning the Swan Owners Association and the Swan Brand. OPO started in 1993 as a crew networking organization. It was not until 1995 that we stared regular classified ads in the Sailing Trade Magazines and several years of exhibiting at boats shows. We are now recognized as one of the oldest and best crew network for amateur sailors in North America.
In 1998 we got involved with the Swan Program moving a fleet of Swans between Newport and the Caribbean. In 2000 we took over the Program and started the NARC Rally. Five years ago we bought our first Swan 48 and she has been the core of our Offshore Swan Program. The Swan Program allows us to offer quality offshore passages to members that need fixed dates well in advance. It is also a guaranteed way for some members to get their first offshore passage. Plus you get to meet us.
Last Friday morning before the start of the 1st race I was able to arrange a one-on-one meeting with the CEO of Swan, who made a last week decision to fly over to the States for 24 hours to show support for the American Swan Association. Our discussions focused on the purchase of the three boat fleet of Swans that are coming out of a five year charter contract involving the French Government. Our long history with Swan has us in a very good position to acquire the fleet at a very good price. This past week I mailed a package to the Swan CEO with copies of 23 articles in 12 different sailing publications printed in four countries that had articles about Swans and “Avocation”, because of our reputation and contacts. Yes, twenty three articles.
Although we will keep members abreast of our progress, this will be the last invitation to any member who may be interested in learning more about investing time and money into a limited partnership. You can be a part of this next expansion off the OPO Swan Program. This works for people who are very busy and could not spend the time, nor justify the investment, of owning a seaworthy ocean/racing sailing yacht, but would still like to have the option of sailing four to six weeks a year. This is the new practical way to own a boat and invest in your future sailing career. Operating expenses are subsidized by the OPO Program and tax advantages are very good for most people still working. If you would like to enjoy a mix of offshore sailing, big boat racing, and reserved cruising time with friends and family split between time in the Caribbean, New England and the Med, please let me know soon. This is also a great way to improve your sailing skills over the next few years. When you are ready to retire and have more time you can sell your shares and buy your own boat after spending time learning and sailing with professional skippers in our program. For more details on the inside scoop to why this is such a special opportunity, please e-mail me for a phone conversation appointment.
Swan Program this fall – Which is a good lead in to our fall program. The fall migration south does not start until after the hurricane season which is about November 1st with the start of our NARC Rally. That is why we try and offer some good sailing opportunities aboard Avocation in September and October with near costal trips to the Newport Boat Show and the Annapolis Boat Show in October. We have not sailed to the Newport Boat show in the last two years because we were in Europe for the Swan Worlds last summer and we had a boat Show booth at the Newport Boat Show two years ago. So this will be the first sail from Huntington to Newport since 2006.
Details – Sail with me aboard our own Swan 48 “Avocation”, or with Italian Skipper Marco Trabucco aboard the Swan 56 “Why Not”, from Huntington NY to the Newport Boat Show and back. If you only have time for one leg, you can join us sailing to the show, see the show on Thursday, and go home or you can come to Newport on Thursday morning to see the show and then move aboard “Avocation” or “Why Not” for the return passage departing Friday or Saturday depending on the weather. Plan to arrive in Huntington Monday September 14th for departure that day if the weather is ok. Different from past years we are adding an extra day to the trip so we have two days to sail to Newport (it is about 100 miles) and stop one night along the way. We do not have to motor-sail if we do not have wind and can hope to get some very good sailing in.
We will arrive in Newport Wednesday September 16th for the opening of the show on Thursday. We will be back in Huntington NY by Sunday Sept 20th. Those wishing to arrive in Newport for the return trip can arrive on Thursday for the show and we will depart on Friday or Saturday depending on the weather. We will be back in Huntington on Sunday afternoon or earlier depending on the weather. The price is $200 per person per day based on 4 or 8 days, plus sharing operating expenses. There are small discounts for couples or the whole 8 days round trip. .
Annapolis Boat Show – We also plan to make the trip to Annapolis in October and will let you know the dates later this month.
NARC Rally – Posters are being mailed out and the sailing trade magazines have already been sent press releases so you may see mention of our 10th anniversary NARC Rally soon. We expect a record turn out with many opportunities for members to crew aboard for the annual pilgrimage south from New England in the fall. If you know anyone heading south or run into anyone in your travels, remember to tell them about the Free NARC Rally and to visit our web site www.sailopo.com for more info.
NARC Rally Swan Sailing Program – We have two Swans sailing in the NARC Rally this fall. They are “Avocation” which I will skipper and the Swan 57 “Boonatsa” skippered by Murray Jacob. Murray is one of our most popular skippers and is returning to the NARC after missing the last three. He started with us in 2000. This is a guaranteed way of reserving a berth in the Rally if you need firm dates or would like to start planning your fall sailing now. The details are on the web site.
Caribbean Season – Our web site has also been updated with the dates for our Caribbean Regatta Season. We will be sailing in the Heineken Regatta, BVI Spring Festival and Antigua Sailing Week. If you need the dates well in advance please visit our wed site at www.sailopo.com
Bermuda Cruising Rally - Here is an advanced “near final” draft of the article I am writing for WindCheck magazine, which is our free local boating publication, similar to Points East in New England, SpinSheet in the Chesapeake area and Lat 38 on the West Coast. Since most of you will not see it in WindCheck next month hear is the report on the rally. To summarize, the rally went well this year and we plan to support and be part of it next year as an avenue for us to create more passage opportunities for our members.

The 2nd annual Bermuda Cruising Rally departed on schedule June 21st from Greenport NY. Veteran Sailor Dan Goldberg started the rally in 2008 after trying to sign up and participate in a rally from the East Coast to Bermuda. Finding none still in existence he decided to start a new one. Lending support and a name, Tania Aebi of solo-around-the-world-fame (Her book Maiden Voyage was published in 1988) help organize the rally and sailed with the fleet aboard a Swan 48,
This year saw the rally grew from three last year to eight boats. Already four boats have signed up for next year as Dan and group hope to double the numbers once again. This year the departure point was changed from New York Harbor, where even the biggest events are overshadowed by the skyline, to Mitchell Park Municipal Marina in Greenport NY.
Tania headlined the pre departure seminar on Saturday morning, followed by weather and Gulf Steam expert Guru’s Dale and Jennifer Clarke, who had just sent the Marion Bermuda Race off a couple of days before. Tom (name) from Hudson’s and his wife captain (name) did the safety inspections, always with a smile, despite an injured arm from (What happened to him? Was it from sailing?) All skippers were sent a very detailed Rally Handbook filled with all the information one needed for sailing to and from Bermuda. This made the inspections a brief formality.
Greenport is a salty seaport town inside the north fork of Long Island. The Mitchell Municipal Park Marina is only 3 years old (when was it built?) and is one of the only “all transient” marinas on Long Island. The location is a two minute walk from the LIRR Train Station and adjacent to the Shelter Island North Ferry dock. Being an all transient dock, Dock manager (What his name) and staff were very, very helpful, as in three dock attentions helpful, to tend lines. The bathrooms were top notch. Three blocks of stores, a choice of restaurants and even a quaint non-mega movie theater were all within sight of the marina. Another delightful novelty across the village green sits a fully restored carousal behind huge glass doors that open or close as weather dictates. Another bonus, which reminded us we were not in the big city, mayor xxxx of Greenport came to our pre-departure BBQ and hoisted a few with us. Mayor so-so, very generously gave the rally free range of the Greenport Fire Station house for the skippers/weather briefing two blocks from the Marina. A big thanks goes out to the town of Greenport.
Despite a less than perfect forecast for the next three days, the fleet decided to depart on time. The smallest boat in the fleet was a Frers 33 named owned by Alan of NY? At the other extreme we has Jim Passport 50 and two Swans, a 56 named “Why Not” from Italy and a Swan 48 called “Avocation” owned by Offshore Passage Opportunities. Dan sailed with the fleet last year so this year it was Tania’s turn to sail with the fleet skippering the Swan 48, with sailors signing aboard to not only experience their first offshore passage to Bermuda, but to sail with Tania Aebi on only her second trip to Bermuda. The first being in 1987 when she departed on the first leg of her solo-around the world adventure in a 26’ sailboat. Five lucky sailors sailed out with Tania and five others made the return passage. It was a pleasure and privilege for everyone in the fleet to sail or share a drink with Tania. Sailing is one of the few sports where your average Joe can meet and get to know a sporting celebrity. I think she had as much fun as the crew and enjoyed sailing a Swan 48 with a well running engine and all systems in working order. She told me she should would plan to be back next year, so others will get the chance to share in the rally next year.
The route south called for skippers to heed the weather routers warning to stay well west of the rumbline to delay the Gulf Steam crossing. The strategy worked well as the 20 to 25 knots from the northwest diminished by the second and third day and the skies cleared. Sailing the rumbline route, as one boat did, kept them in the rain and squalls for the entire passage that ended with a 40 miles beat into Bermuda the last day. All the boats arrived safely and with almost no problems due to the diligence of the skippers following the guide book and weather routing instructions. All boats were provided with i-boat tracking so friends and family could watch their progress and sat phones were also provided to boats lacking for the once a day check in and weather update.
In Bermuda, the Rally was hosted by Bermuda Yachts Services located a stone throw from the customs clearance dock on Ordinance Island in St. Georges Harbor. The last arrival, and only boat that departed from the Chesapeake Bay, arrived in plenty of time for the Bacardi Rum Party Saturday Night, punctuated with many “Partly Cloudy” drinks as apposed to Dark-n-Stormies. The crew at Bermuda Yacht Services, (please provide names) laid out a great spread of food homemade by Dock mistress ( ). She and Bermuda Yacht Services currently run the local waterfront docks for the Government and are the folks to call on VHF 14 for docking instructions upon arrival. (Please provide telephone number) Their well equipped shop and knowledgeable friendly staff can and did help with any problems.
With most owners and crew having a tight two weeks window for the round trip, most boats left on Monday after only a three or four day visit. The exceptions were the crew of Angeline who were visiting their parents who were taking care of their new baby after having flown him down to stay with Grandma and Granddad for a week. Another family crew of ( boat name ), Mom, Dad and college daughter Eve, who had sailed all the way down from the Great Lakes for the Rally and were still planning another month to get all the way home. They were not the only family sailing to Bermuda for the first time, with Jim ( ) of the passport 50 ( ) also having 20-something some and daughter crew along with a couple of others.
The Sweden 36 named “Engleman” owned by OPO member Matthew Haarsager used the rally as the first leg of his transatlantic delivery to Portugal. Matt recently bought and lunched his boat in Rhode Island and was delivering her to Portugal. Matt owned one of four boats that had crew from the crew networking service called Offshore Passage Opportunities (OPO). Hank Schmitt, who runs OPO, helped organize the rally and provided free crew networking services to all participants. He also crewed the two Swans in the fleet, a Swan 56 from Italy and the aforementioned Swan 48 Avocation skippered by Tania Aebi. This allowed non-boat owners to experience the crossing and be in a rally on well founded boats with professional skippers. Both options will be included in next year’s rally which will be held the later part of June 2010. Contact OPO at www.sailopo.com
With a successful second rally in the history books, plans for next season will start with a planned seminar and instructional gathering this winter in the NY Metropolitan area with Tania Aebi, Dan Goldberg and Hank Schmitt, helping others complete this classic passage to Bermuda in a non-race format. Look in WindCheck magazine for dates and info later this fall.

NARC Rally

Opportunities
Editorial – We are just back from the Bermuda Cruising Rally. This was the 3rd visit to Bermuda for “Avocation” this spring. Tania Aebi skippered “Avocation” and I got to relax crewing aboard the Swan 56 “Why Not?” Tania and her rally partner Dan Goldberg ran the rally and I got to push buttons on electric winches aboard the Swan 56. I will send you a copy of the article about the event when it is written. We plan to join the 3rd Annual Rally to Bermuda next year and Tania had a good time and enjoyed sailing a Swan 48 for a change. She will be back to offer more OPO members the opportunity to sail with her. She also runs a couple of all women charter trips a couple of times a year. We will let our women members know about these opportunities as we learn about them.
Summer Projects – This summer we will be developing our web site some more and expanding the store to include useful discounts and OPO gear. We will also be updating the site. Look forward to new dates and posting for regattas and Swan trips next fall and winter. As usual the many free opportunities will continue to be sent directly to you as they come in. As you will see in the notices below it is the offseason and we seem to be getting more calls for people needing to hire a new skipper (new as in budding and not charging full price yet and is willing to give a flat rate for a passage). The boats are usually smaller and older, but that is how one gains more experience. In these cases the owner can not afford $350 to $400 a day, but will pay a reasonable counter offer on a flat rate. With a flat rate and if you also have time you can enjoy the passage or route and take the time to wait for nice weather and to see more than you would see if you needed to run 24 hours a day to earn the full day rate.
Recent OPO Successes – as defined two ways. OPO Member Peter Bourke finished the OSTAR single handed race from Plymouth England to Newport this past Friday. While not setting any records with a 39 day passage, Peter nevertheless finished the 2009 OSTAR race and made us all proud. Peter first went offshore in our Swan Program and has sailed in some regattas with us. He hired me to sail to Bermuda with him in 1998 and to send him back on his own. He calls us for crew and still sails with us and has been an active member and big success story for us. Some of you have met him on a passage or at a regatta. You may have just read about him in the July Issue of “Blue Water Sailing” magazine and there very well be more mentions of him in magazines this next month or two. We claim him as one of ours first. Congrats Peter.
Another Type of Success – OPO member John Pederson is arriving next week in Huntington to sea trial his newly purchased Beneteau 461. John first sailed offshore in our Swan Program from Newport to St. Maarten. He liked it so much he did about 5 trips in a row with us. He has since chartered many of the lesser Antilles and finally, upon retiring last month, quickly asked us to find him a boat so he can sail south in the NARC Rally this year. The boat is 5 years old, but has only 70 hours on the engine and was never much used by a family who did not share the sailing bug with Dad. The boat and sails are new. John may be looking for crew later this summer or for the rally. We will keep you posted. In the mean time we will be helping John get discounts on safety equipment and help him rig the boat for offshore sailing. We have time to help a couple of members a year find a boat and help them get her ready for offshore. Soon we plan to share all our outfitting secrets from buying a liferaft to finding a fishing “yo-yo rig” on our web site. We will keep you posted as we add items to our web site.
NARC Rally – I have new letter head size posters about the NARC Rally. This is the 10th anniversary of the North American Rally to the Caribbean. In celebration we are making the rally free to all boat owners with the goal of getting 25 boats and many opportunities for our members. If you know of anyone thinking about sailing south with their boats this year please tell them about the NARC Rally. If you belong to a club or know of a good place to post a small nice looking poster, please let me know and I will send you some posters. It is especially helpful if you belong to a club and/or know the person in charge well so you can ask them to post it. Better yet try and get the rally mentioned in your club newsletter. All the sailing publications have been sent press releases and many will mention it in their publications in the next month or two. If you would like a copy of the press release for your publication please let me know.
Adriatic Sea - Cruise this September aboard the Swan 46 “Aphrodite”. This is the same boat we delivered to Malta last September. This year we start in Greece and will end three weeks later in Malta. OPO skipper Gareth Hughes will be skippering the boat. He has been there before. Plan to Travel to Curfu Greece September 1st to beat the Labor Day Holiday rush and costs. Ideally crew will want to spend 3 weeks aboard and end the trip in Malta Sunday Sept 20th. We do not want to crowd the boat too much so will have only 4 crew sailing along with Gareth. If you can only make half the trip we will decide where and what day to make plans to have crew change. The price is only $1000 per person per week, plus a share of the boat expenses which usually runs about $200 a week per person. We had several people express interest in sailing in the Med who responded to the last newsletter. Please call or e-mail me and I will be happy to help set this up for you. I wish I could make the trip myself, but I have a lot going on this summer and need to stay closer to home to get ready for the NARC Rally in the fall.
Opportunities
San Diego CA to Baine WA or Vancouver CANADA – New Boat owner xxxxxxx is looking to hire a skipper and then get a couple more OPO members to help him sail his newly purchased 35’ Yorktown Sloop. xxxxx is flying down to the boat next week and would like to set sail in about one month from now. He is not in a super rush and can wait on weather so would like to get a skipper who will give him a flat rate for the delivery, taking it easy and not rushing by paying per diem. The trip will take about 3 weeks. After our OPO member and xxxxx come to an agreement we will send out a notice for one or two other OPO members. xxxxxx plans to offer return airfare plus all expenses for one or two more crew. If interested please contact xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or e-mail
Newington NH (near Portsmouth) to Beaufort NC –xxxxxxx has owned their 1989 Catalina 27 for 4 years. They have recently moved to North Carolina and now want to move their boat to their new home. They are looking for one or two experienced crew to join them for a leisurely delivery along the coast. The trip will take about 3 weeks sailing the coast and stopping most nights. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included. If you do not have three weeks you can offer to make part of the trip with them. Call xxxxxx at xxx-xxx-xxxxx or e-mail at xxxxxxxxxx@yahoo.com

Cathy sent out an e-mail last night by mistake that had part of our e-mail address book. Sorry if we clogged up anyone. I will reprimand her when she arrives today. If you get any e-mails from people you do not want please let me know and I will contact them in protest. Once again I apologize for this mistake.
Editorial – What a week it has been. For those OPO members that have done a regatta with us you will understand when I say that the new format in Antigua (due to the loss of Stanford Bank sponsorship) was brutal. We had six days in a row of racing with 8 races. We never flew anything except the # 3 Genoa since it was blowing so hard. We were also bumped up to Division # 1 sailing with 19 boats including three Farr 65’s, and we were 4th from the bottom on the scratch sheet. Avocation did great and we had no damages to speak of. With the end of Antigua Sailing Week, we mark the end of our Caribbean Racing Season and this week we get ready for our true calling, offshore passage making.
We have about 40 OPO members sailing with us over the next 7 weeks from St. Maarten to Newport, or in one of two round trips from NY to Bermuda, one with Tania Aebi skippering Avocation in the 2nd Annual Bermuda Cruising Rally. The Marion Bermuda Race participants have been notified of our crew services, and we have been sending out notices as they come in. Cathy will be selling or closing down her business of the past 6 years to work with us full time. She is flying to St. Marten on May 3rd for 6 days so we will be operating from here this week.
We sent out a notice looking for OPO members planning to take off on a life changing adventure for a story on the Oprah Network for June or July. After I e-mailed and explained that this was not the time of year any sane person would depart because of hurricane season, they e-mailed back that they could delay until the fall. So if there are any OPO members that are planning to depart next fall (preferably in our NARC Rally), let Stacey or me know. I think they want a family.
Subject: Documentary TV series
Detailed Information: Hi - I am working on a documentary TV show for the Oprah Winfrey Network, called My Last 24.The idea behind the series is to film people in the hours leading up to a major life change. We are hoping to film a family who is giving it all up to go on an around the world sailing adventure for the first time ever - departing this June or early July. If you know of anybody who may fit the bill, please tell them to contact me at mylast24@gmail.com. Thanks –Stacey. TenenbaumGalafilm productionswww.galafilm.com
Ostar – OPO members Peter Bourke has an Outbound 44 and is sailing to England for the start as we write. The Ostar is a single handed race from England to Newport run once every 4 years. Peter has been an OPO member for 10 years and writes that he owes all this to OPO. Follow Peter in the race and if you are in or near Newport about June 15th to 20th, we plan to try and greet him upon arrival with a full compliment of OPO members. We will keep you posted in the June 1st Notice, but do follow him online.

Local Sailing with OPO members – Early Spring and the start of summer is a good time to let us know if you are interested in meeting fellow OPO members who may wish to sail with you locally. During the month of May and June only we will include any local sailing opportunities that we hear about. This will include Avocation of we make any short trips this summer. I will also be back in early June for local deliveries and will be sending out notices for those that may live in the area. If you have a boat and wish us to send out an OPO notice for you, please just send us an e-mail with the details.
May Day Sailing
OPO member Jim has a boat near Boston and invites OPO members to join him for day sailing. He e-mails. I have a 25 Foot Catalina, Papillon, that I sail out of Marina Bay in Quincy Massachusetts (right next to Boston Harbor). Papillon goes into the water the week of May 4th.
I am always looking for crew for day sailing, short overnight trips or week long excursions. She is a non drinking underway boat and the interested parties need no experience.
I can’t find Jim’s e-mail right now and my battery is about to die. Jim with the 25 foot CVat e-mail me and I will send it out with other local sailing opportunities in the next few days.
OPO memberxxxxxxxxx has a Tartan 37 that he sails on Ky Lake and would be happy to have other OPO members join him for day sails.
I'll do that, I'd like a crew on Ky Lake from time to time. AnneBonny is a 1980 Tartan 37C. xxxxxx@burgoo.com
Opportunities
Two long passages coming up. I do not have all the details, but they are OPO skippers that I have put in touch with the owners and they are putting the crew together.
Newport to Elba – OPO skipper xxxxxxxxxxx will be delivering a Swan 431 from Jamestown RI to Elba departing about May 20th. The new owner is making the first leg to Bermuda and then Murray will be sailing to the Azores, Gibraltar, and then Elba by early July. Please e-mail xxxxxxxxx to check and see what crew he needs. The trip is free with all onboard expenses included. Murray’s e-mail is xxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com
Newport to Portugal – OPO skipper xxxxxxxx will be delivering a Sweden 38 from Newport to Portugal. The owner of the boat is an OPO member and will be making at least the first leg. They will need one or two more crew, so e-mail skipper and see what there needs are. This trip is also free with onboard expenses included. E-mail xxxx at xxxxxx@yahoo.com

Editorial – If there are any OPO members on the West Coast who are planning to attend the Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show I have 4 complimentary tickets. I will be happy to mail you at least one ticket and more if we do not have lot of members going. Just let us know and I will mail them to you when I get back to the office Thursday April 3rd.
I am flying to St. Maarten to work on the boat and will be back Wednesday night. Cathy will check the phone and I will check e-mail once a day.
If any members are attending the Safety at Sea Seminar at MIT in Boston this weekend you will see the OPO Flyer in the welcome bags given to all attendees. Any boats entered in the Marion Bermuda Race or Marblehead to Halifax Race must have a percentage of their crew attend. Our flyer lets boat owners and skippers know about our OPO members who are available to help sail their boats back after the race. This is an example of OPO actively looking for more offshore sailing opportunities for our members.
We had to pull the plug on the BVI Festival this year, but our other Swan Passage Opportunities are doing well. Some are full and some have a couple of berths left. If you want to or need to plan firm dates ahead of time the Swan Program is the best way to do this. The passages do cost some money, but you can be guaranteed that the boat is in great shape and ready for sea since it is a Swan. Also the skippers have been vetted by us. An added bonus is getting to know you so we can personally recommend you for future passages. The Spring Swan Opportunities are also great first time offshore voyages. Sometimes it is hard to convince an owner to take you offshore if you have never been offshore before, so our Swan Program offers to help get that first opportunity under your belt. Many Insurance Companies require crew to have at least one offshore passage in their resume. This is a good way to get that first passage in. Send me an e-mail if you want to learn more. Details for some trips are below along with how many berths might be open.
New Web Site –We are still working out the kinks in the web site. Right now, non member can not look at the crew profiles, which is good, except that we do not always make boat owners and skippers join OPO to get crew from us. We need to make it possible for these skippers to view your profile. I also do not want OPO members to be bothered by people they do not want to hear from, so we will be placing restrictions on how people get in touch with each other. Sometime later this month I will send everyone instructions on how to fill out their on-line survey if that have not already done so.
Swan Ownership – Last chance to get on our special e-mail list about getting involved with our Swan Program as a part owner. Many members plan to buy a boat in the future to go sailing offshore or in far away places. However if you do not have a lot of time or your friends and family do not have a lot of time to join you, it may be the wrong move to buy an offshore boat. Who wants to pay for a boat that sits unused most of the time? If you can say yes to some of the following questions then you may want to get on our short list and learn more about how we plan to make this work for you. Would you like to spend 4 to 8 weeks sailing a year? Would you like to spend one or two week increments coastal cruising with your family and friends? Would you like to race in a Caribbean Regatta or sail offshore for a week or two? How about a Trans-at or part of an around the world cruise? Would you like to split sailing time between New England, the Caribbean and the Med? Would you like to own part of a Swan Program that lets you accomplish all of this at little or no annual maintenance costs? Just e-mail me and I will add you to our short list. This month we will start the dialogue that may lead to getting in on the ground floor of this program offering time aboard Swan 56’s, 48’s and perhaps a Swan 62.
Bermuda Cruising Rally – Any boat owners that are planning an offshore trip this year and do not want to race to Bermuda (Marion Bermuda Race) are welcome to join the 2nd annual Bermuda Cruising Rally. This rally is organized by Dan Goldberg and Tania Aebi. The fleet departs from Greenport NY on Sunday June 21st but boats should arrive by June 19th. The trip out and back will take about two weeks. Some members are sailing in the fleet on a Swan, but if you have your own boat you are also welcome to join the rally. For more information go to www.bermudacruisingrally.com
Local Sailing Opportunities – Each Spring we offer boat owning OPO members the opportunity to reach out to other OPO members in their area for local sailing. Any OPO members who have a boat and would like to invite other OPO members to day sail or overnight on weekends may tell us and we will post the opportunities to other members. We have members all over the US and some may live close enough to you to meet and enjoy local sailing. Often OPO members meet on longer passages and wish that they lived closer to each other. Well there may be OPO members that live closer that you might enjoy meeting. Let us know and we will post what kind of boat you have, when you plan to be in the water and your e-mail address. We will post the opportunities in the May 1st Notice. Note: The best way to endear yourself with a boat owner is to offer to help them get their boat ready for the season or to help tackle a work project.
Antigua Sailing Week – We will be back sailing aboard Avocation. There is a new format for the race this year with a new Sponsor. We have a six cabin Support Catamaran for the regatta and we have all new race sails. This is a great chance to get away for a great regatta. We have eight crew and are looking for a couple more people. If you are interested please get in touch and I will give you the details. You can fly into and out of Antigua Friday April 24th to Friday May 1st. Or you can add one or two days at each end and fly into and out of St. Maarten and sail over from St. Maarten with the boat. Those dates would be to fly into St. Maarten on Wednesday April 22nd and fly home from St. Maarten May 3rd or 4th. We have been 4th place at the Antigua Regatta for the last three years and this year we will be working hard to get on the podium. If you are thinking about joining us for this last regatta of the season, please let us know soon.
May St. Maarten to Newport - This is our 9th year making this run and a great introduction to offshore sailing since we start in warm trade winds and work into the more boisterous conditions north of Bermuda. Anyone interested in an offshore adventure and sea miles can sail back from the Caribbean aboard one of three Swans that we will be sailing back between May 9th to May 24th. Avocation is full for the first leg and we have only one berth left for the Bermuda to Newport/NY leg. I am skippering the boat. The dates for the 2nd leg are to fly into Bermuda on Sunday May 17th and fly home from Newport May 23rd or New York May 24th. The Swan 56 with Italian Captain and Cook aboard is also filling up, but we have a couple of berths left. We also have OPO skipper Gareth Hughes sailing the Swan 46 Antares North. Antares will start in Tortola and crew can arrive as early as May 6th to help sail her over to St. Maarten, other crew will arrive May 9th and we depart as a fleet of three boats May 10th. If you want the maximum amount of sea time and offshore sailing, give me a call (or better an e-mail as I will be out of the office until April 3rd) and we can make some plans.
June New York to Bermuda and back – We are scheduling a special round trip for OPO members who are short on time or want to guarantee an offshore passage early in the season. I will skipper Avocation from Huntington NY to Bermuda and back. The dates are to depart NY Sunday May 30th and crew change in Bermuda Sunday June 7th for those making just one leg. We will be back in NY June 14th. Each leg is one full week. The price includes expenses for the boat, fuel, head tax and linen. We will split the onboard food amongst the 5 to 6 crew. This is less than half price of any other program to or from Bermuda. The leg from NY to Bermuda is full but we have 2 berths left for the return passage. Contact us and you can reserve one of the last berths
Tania Aebi & The Bermuda Cruising Rally– Tania will be skippering “Avocation” in the Bermuda Cruising Rally June 21st to July 5th and her boat is full for both legs. I plan to be sailing aboard the Swan 56 “Why Not?” (There are just two berths left for the return passage with the outbound trip also full) We will be sailing in the 2nd Annual Bermuda Cruising Rally organized by Dan Goldberg out of NY, Tania is the “name” behind the event, and we are the official crew networking part of the event. Check out the web site (www.BermudaCruisingRally.com) and plan to join us for the trip back. The price is $1800 outboard for the week or $1600 for the return passage. (The extra $200 covers the rally fee and parties that will be included the first week). This includes everything except your transportation to and from the boat.
Opportunities
St. Thomas to Greece – Boat Owner xxxxxxxx is looking for crew to help sail his very, very nice 62’ xxxxxx designed Cutter Sloop to the Med.. xxxxcalled from Trinidad and we had a nice chat. He plans to depart St. Thomas 24th April, but crew can and should arrive early, anytime from April 18th to the 22nd. He plans about 22 days to Gibraltar, 4 days to San Tropez and then 6 days to Greece. Of course add days for time in port. You do not have to go all the way to Greece. The name of the boat is xxxxxxx and you can see the boat on viewyacht.com xxxxxxxas xxxxxx does some chartering with her. xxxxx has been sailing for many years. He lived in New York for many years and has made the north/south migration 10 times and has sailed to Europe before. The boat is a 1991, but was totally refit in 2005. The trip is free with onboard expenses included, but you need to get to and from the boat. For more info please contact him at xxxxxxxxx
St. Thomas to Huntington NY – OPO Skipper xxxxxx is making the annual passage north with the Hylas xx. He is looking for one or two crew for this 10 day passage. Crew should plan to arrive on May 3rd for a departure May 4th or 5th. Nick has made the trip with this boat many times and it is a big comfortable, seaworthy boat. Antigua – Azores –UK – The Skye 51 delivery from Antigua to the UK with Captain Dan Bower has crew arriving May 6th for departure the 9th. This 4 to 5 week passage is on a strong boat with two pro crew. So far we have three OPO members, two female grad students on their way to India, and one guy. Can take one or two more crew. $1500 for five weeks is a great deal to go with a pro. We were charging $4500 for Avocations plans last year at the same time. If interested just let me know offshorepassage@sprintmail.com
Coming soon
Here are a couple of long passage opportunities that we are waiting to get confirmation on. We list them just incase you want to think about them so you may be ready to act when they get qualified. And we send out a notice to you.
Peru to Panama Canal to East Coast – OPO skipper AJ Smith and I are awaiting for the go ahead to sail a Swan 40 from Peru through the Panama Canal and then to either to a port in the Gulf or East Coast to place her on a truck to get the boat to the Great Lakes. Houston?, East Coast?, All the way? If you have 4 weeks to 7 weeks off and are up for an adventure… think about it. Plans may be to start as early as April 12th.
Newport to Bermuda, Azores, Gib, Elba – OPO skipper Murray Jacob and I are waiting to hear about this offshore passage on a Swan 43 but not departing until May 20th. This trip will take about 5 weeks.
Dear Swan & OPO Fans,
I have started a new address book for a handful of active OPO members who are interested in learning more about our plan to have a small fleet of Swans to serve the owners interests of having 6 weeks to 2 months of sailing on a Swan a year. Some of the annual expenses would be offset by having paying crew sail, when the owners are not using the boat, or with the owners sailing with other OPO members. (As in an offshore passage or in a regatta). Other times the owners would be able to reserve a week or two at a time to spend with family and friends in either the Caribbean. New England or the Med.. When not using the boat, there would be little or no expenses.
If you are looking to purchase a boat, but realize you only have a limited amount of time to sail now. Or if you want to buy a boat, but realize that your family and friends do not sail or have the time to go sailing with you, then you might want to think about getting involved with our plans to have a share in a great boat.
This is only for people who are ready in the next few months to make a comitment to purchase some boats. If you think you are intersted, please feel free to contact me and see about getting your name added to the short list of members we have been speaking to recently.
Regards,
Hank Schmitt

Spring Swan Offshore Sailing Opportunities – We have several passages planned for May and June. The following are almost full and I wanted to offer members the opportunity to sail with us before we fill up. We have been in several sailing magazines lately and non-OPO members are filling up the berths.
In June we have two boats sailing in the 2nd edition if the Bermuda Cruising Rally from Greenport NY to Bermuda and back. Tania Aebi will be skippering Avocation, our Swan 48, and I will be sailing aboard a Swan 56. Tania’s trip to Bermuda is full and she has only two berths left for the return passage. There is only one berth left on the Swan 56 for the trip south. Depart Greenport June 21st – Bermuda June 28th and back to NY by July 5th.
Two other opportunities that are almost full are the May 9th to May 24th passage from St. Maarten to Newport/NY with only one berth left and the passage from NY to Bermuda departing Huntington May 31st also aboard Avocation with myself skippering, has only one berth left.
If you would like to secure a firm date for an offshore passage this spring well ahead of time, let me know and we will help you get a good sail in early this year.
Regards,
Hank

Opportunities
Editorial – I have been in the Caribbean since Feb 4th. Ten OPO members joined us for cruising and we have just returned to St. Maarten for the Heineken Regatta. Eleven members fly in starting tomorrow to race with us. We have been able to stay in touch via wireless internet and have been spreading the word about OPO. One recent posting, Tortola to Durban South Africa, is a direct result of or sailing about. (The owner swears he will give us dates this week).
Getting away from the office and sailing is a good way to get new ideas for OPO. Some members, who were also chartering this week in the BVI, e-mailed us and told us to look out for them. Those sailing on a Moorings Charter Boat were hard to find since they are so ubiquitious in the Islands. We did manage to meet up with one member and participant in this past NARC Rally and it was fun to buddy sail with them for a week. Each of our crew spent one day jumping to their Amel 53 for a change of pace and to check the boat out. It was also fun having other people to interact with and add more spice.
The two happenstances have lead me to the idea of picking a week next year in February and seeing how many OPO members we could get on several different boats (or even privately owned boats) and have an OPO cruise for a week. I will see what deals I can get from the Mooring for a few different boat, cats and mono-hulls, and members could visit each other and try sailing on different boats and with different people some days. This would not be restricted to OPO members, as some people plan to charter in the winter with friends and family. They could just plan to charter in the same week. If they only have one or two friends that wish to charter we can fill up their boats and lessen the costs, by getting one or two OPO members to fill the boat. Several OPO couples may get a bigger Cat to share where they would normally not be able to get enough people, or they may lack the qualifications the get a big boat.
We would offer berths aboard Avocation and play lead “mother duck” as we plan an itinerary in the BVI. Just think of 30 or 40 OPO members at the “Willy T” on Norman Island, or planning our own “jump up” at the Bitter End Resort. Foxy would be glad to have us over for his Friday Night “all you can eat” for $28.00. It would be a lot of fun, we could get special rates, and many OPO members could meet to plan future offshore passages.
I will be back in the office on March 11th after the regatta, but if you think you would be interested in sailing with us for a week next year, just send me a short e-mail and I will start a list and if we have enough people I will start a new e-mail address book to keep people posted about ideas and plans for a week next year. I will look to the group to help pick a date and plan the weeks itinerary. We have spent two or three weeks in the BVI for the past 4 winter, but know we have not found everything.
New Web Site – Our new web site is up. I had wanted to be around in the states for the start up to answer any questions about signing up, but as usual things take longer when several people need to be involved. Our web meistress did a great job and our consultant Lee Smith, has been invaluable and has played tech support while I am away. If you have already filled out a resume, great. If not you can wait until I get back to the office and we can help those that may be having trouble. As long as we can get most members to fill out their surveys online in the next 6 weeks, we will be in good shape. E-mail changed the way OPO works several years ago. Our new web site and online survey for members will take us to the next level. In the next few month we plan to partner and offer some new related products and services to help our members further their goals in pursuit of offshore sailing while not getting away from our main niche of providing quality and unique offshore passage opportunities, most of them for free.
Spring Swan Sailing Schedule – As you know we have a full boat for the Heineken Regatta this week. Next up is the BVI Regatta at the end of March and beginning of April on a Swan 56. I will be aboard and it will be a mix of American and Italian Sailors. This is a lot more than a 3 day Regatta like Heineken. The first day is a race up to the Bitter End Resort. The next day is t
“The Around Virgin Gorda Race (The first time being held as part of the BVI Festival since it is normally run at the Swan Rendezvous). The third day we race back to Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola and then we start the 3 day part of the BVI Regatta. So it is 3 race series in one week. The costs is less than the Heineken or Antigua Sailing Week and we already have a big cat as our support boat. There are some good airline rates to the BVI this winter so if you are interested in getting away for a full active week in the Caribbean, just let us know. The dates were in the last two monthly notices. If you deleted them you can find them on our web site. If you want to fly into and out of St. Maarten you can sail the Swan 56 to and from St. Maarten and add two more overnight passages to this already very full week of sailing. Just plan to fly into St. Maarten on Friday of that week and fly home on the following Tuesday after the regatta. There is no extra charge for the extra three or 4 days.
Antigua Sailing Week – Although the Title Sponsor for the last few years (Stanford Bank) has pulled out (an understatement if you pay any attention to the news), this is still a very popular regatta and we have only 4 berths left. Again the dates and prices are in the last two monthly “Notices to OPO Mariners” or you can find them on the web site. Get some extra overnight sails in and join us in St. Maarten for the sail to and from the regatta at no extra charge. We hope to see you there.
May passage north and Sail to Bermuda – Want a full 1500 miles or 650 miles offshore in a short time. Plan to join us and sail aboard a Swan for our popular Swan fleet return in May (Three Swans, our 48, a 56 or sail with OPO skipper Gareth Hughes on a Swan 46). In June we are making two trips to Bermuda aboard Avocation. One May 30th and the 2nd in the Bermuda Cruising Rally June 21st departing from Greenport NY. Tania Aebi will be skippering Avocation and I will be sailing the Swan 56. Tania’s boat is already full for the passage to Bermuda, but she has a couple of berths left for the return passage. The 56 still has a couple of berths each way. If you are interested I will be happy to help you plan a great one week passage or plan to make both legs. Sail out on the 56 and back with Tania oboard Avocation.
